Operating hours adjustment for Lunar New Year's Eve
Recently, the Pudong Art Museum is hosting exhibitions by the Louvre and Picasso. The 100 yuan ticket price is quite reasonable, and you can enjoy beautiful views of Pudong. The Pudong Food Hall also has several good restaurants; the prices aren't too expensive, and the food is delicious. It wasn't too crowded on a weekday, and the museum itself has a nice ambiance.

The Museum of Art Pudong (MAP), invested in, constructed, and operated by Lujiazui Group, was designed by renowned French architect and Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel. Construction began on September 26, 2017, and the museum officially opened to the public in July 2021. Located in the core riverside area of Lujiazui, this 6-story, 30-meter-tall modern building stretches westward to the Huangpu River and connects eastward to the Oriental Pearl Tower via a garden plaza, forming a 30,000-square-meter museum complex.

The Museum of Art Pudong building covers a land area of 13,000 square meters, with a total construction space of nearly 40,000 square meters. It features 13 exhibition halls offering over 10,000 square meters of display area. The building facade and flooring use Shandong white granite, while the interior spaces and decorations draw inspiration from Malevich's classic geometric lines.
As a state-owned public art museum, the Museum of Art Pudong is a key initiative in building the "Shanghai Culture" brand. It carries the cultural mission and social responsibility entrusted by both municipal and district governments, focusing on international art exhibitions and exchanges while also showcasing domestic art. The venue highlights four major functions: exhibitions, art education, cultural creativity, and international exchange, striving to become a new landmark for international cultural venues in Shanghai and an important platform for global cultural and artistic exchange.

The Museum of Art Pudong collaborates with world-leading art institutions and artists to offer visitors the precious experience of appreciating global art treasures without leaving Shanghai, striving to become "the premier destination in China for internationally renowned art exhibitions and a must-visit for domestic artists." The museum has invited Tate Britain as its operational consultant and opening exhibition partner, signing a five-year strategic cooperation agreement to present one major exhibition annually.

The Picasso exhibition at the Pudong Art Museum is absolutely brilliant! Eighty original works bring half a century of the master's life to Shanghai, from his melancholic Blue Period to his imaginative Cubism—each painting proclaims, "Don't play by the rules!" The most amazing piece is the "Bull's Head" sculpture, a bicycle seat and handlebars pieced together to create a masterpiece. Truly a master of transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary! The British designer's cross-disciplinary curation is a huge plus! Striped walls and densely sketched walls break the monotony of traditional art museums, making for incredibly photogenic exhibits. While browsing the exhibition, I couldn't help but laugh—it turns out that New York audiences used to criticize Picasso's work as "looking like a three-year-old's scribbles," but now they find it increasingly captivating. And while you're there, you can also check out the Louvre's special exhibition!
Amazing new exhibitions in January 2025. Worth visiting every time
The Shanghai Pudong Art Museum is a modern art museum with great aesthetics and artistic value. Whether it is the building itself, the exhibition content or the overall atmosphere, it is full of artistic atmosphere. The total area of the mirror hall on the 2nd and 3rd floors is huge. There are high-precision screens behind the glass. When the screen is turned off, the water of the Huangpu River and the buildings on the opposite side are reflected on the mirror, making it a work of art in itself; the mirror hall has also become a "boundless art museum". The art museum is located in the core area of Shanghai's Xiaolujiazui Riverside, backed by the Oriental Pearl Tower and facing the Bund historical buildings. It has a superior geographical location. While watching the exhibition, you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of Shanghai in the museum, check in the iconic mirror hall, 360° panoramic terrace and other beautiful architectural spaces. It is worth taking photos and checking in to see the outdoor scenery from different perspectives in the museum.
I have been to Pumei many times, and each exhibition brings different feelings and experiences. This time I brought my family to see the Turner exhibition. There are fewer people on weekends, maybe Turner is not famous enough in China! However, his naturalistic style of expressing his emotions by depicting light is very unique. After the exhibition, I went to the mirror hall and the terrace on the fifth floor. I didn’t expect the weather to be so good. The Oriental Pearl Tower was within reach. From the terrace, you can see Puxi, Huangpu River and the Oriental Pearl Tower. It is a very good experience.
I came to the Pudong Art Museum during the day on Christmas Eve in 2024 to see the exhibition, mainly to see the "Dialogue with Turner" exhibition. I looked at it from the first and third floors. Each floor of the museum has a theme. In addition, the view from the top terrace is also very good. The cultural and creative store is full of dazzling goods. There are also free color stamps to stamp. The environment of the cafe in the museum is also very fresh. The overall experience is good. [Value for money] You can enjoy the 80 yuan night show after 5 pm. At night, the lights on both sides of the Pujiang River are bright, and the viewing experience is better.
During a night tour of the Pudong Art Museum, I was fortunate to see the blockbuster exhibition "Six Hundred Years of Masters: Masterpieces from the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum". Figures 1 to 9 are respectively Raphael's "Portrait of a Young Man", Rubens' "Venus and Cupid", Courbet's "The Stream", Van Gogh's "The Stevedore of Arles", Manet's "The Knight", Chagall's "Madonna of the Countryside", Canaletto's "View of the Grand Canal from San Vio in Venice", Kandinsky's "Murnau: End of Johannis Street", Chardin's "Pestle, Mortar and Kettle and Copper Pot", all of which are authentic. The exhibition will last until November 12. If students who love Western painting art come to Shanghai recently, they must not miss it.
At the Pudong Art Museum, we met again after several years, and tried to get closer to Turner through tutoring * He is a representative of British romantic landscape painting, focusing on nature * He was born as a young genius, but chose landscape painting, which was not popular at the time * He was experiencing the Industrial Revolution, but realized that people are like ants in front of nature/the universe * He is a traveler, who has been on the wing all his life * He painted while walking, carrying a sketchbook with him. His watercolors and pencils are like modern people's mobile phones that capture the heartbeat of the moment * He is good at light and color (influenced by Rembrandt), and he brought color texture to the extreme when he was old * He is good at perspective, and his paintings when he was young are cleverly laid out * He likes to paint various disasters - raging waves, avalanches, fires, etc., to warn people of their arrogance * His paintings have what Kant calls the sublime (vs. the sense of beauty) * He elevates landscape painting to the level of historical painting * His favorite city is Venice * He influenced impressionism and abstractionism Exhibition: Turner Dialogue Turner: Echoes of the Sublime @ Pudong Art Museum 2024.10.1-2025.5.10
