Fine Dining on the Bund? | My Experience at an Immersive Theatre Restaurant 🌟
Changing into traditional costumes, enjoying live performances, interacting with stunning visuals, and tasting flavors from across China—this meal fulfilled all my wishes and left me feeling absolutely blissful! ✨
💄 Costume & Styling | My Regal Transformation on the Bund
Arrive 1.5–2 hours early to pick your outfit and get styled.
Ladies have endless choices: Hanfu, Qipao, Hong Kong retro, Republican-era fashion… Light-colored outfits photograph best!
Men can opt for long gowns, martial hero costumes, or even emperor robes.
Kids get adorable mini Hanfu—perfect for photos.
I chose the Premium Styling Package (¥398/person), which included the outfit, elegant hairstyling, and accessories. The stylist’s skills were incredible—I felt fully immersed even before entering the dining area.
🍽️ 2-Hour Story-Driven Dining | One Scene, One Dish
Follow Panda Chef Cheng Baobao 🐼 on a culinary journey across China, enhanced with stunning 3D visuals. Each dish represents a different region:
1️⃣ Appetizer Platter: Four regional bites + jasmine cold tea—a refreshing start.
2️⃣ Jiangnan Tapas: Asparagus tartlets and crab meat tartare… paired with Longjing tea, capturing the essence of southern China.
3️⃣ Beijing Duck: Sliced onsite—crispy skin, tender meat, balanced perfectly with hawthorn strips.
4️⃣ Fish in Sour Soup: Tender grouper in a tangy-spicy broth, with fun interactive “fishing” projections on the table.
5️⃣ Mapo Tofu: Upgraded with wagyu and lobster! Lightly spicy and incredibly aromatic—impossible to resist.
6️⃣ Healthy Hot Pot: Rich mushroom broth with premium snow beef and abalone—the freshness speaks for itself.
7️⃣ Sweet Rice Balls: Served with a starry sky visual effect—a dreamy, lightly sweet finale to the journey.
They also offer a fully vegetarian menu!
🎭 More Than a Meal—It’s a Spectacle
Wrap-around screens + table projections: misty Jiangnan landscapes, snowy northern scenes, a starry cosmos… the visuals keep changing and are absolutely breathtaking.
Live performances: water sleeve dance, Sichuan face-changing, Shaolin Kung Fu—the atmosphere is electrifying.
Interactive games: “write” calligraphy, “catch” fish, tap planets—never a dull moment while waiting for dishes.
Passport-style menu: adds to the ceremony, and you can take it home as a souvenir.
It’s like watching a grand food-themed theatre production while you dine.

Although I am seasoned 老中国人 and traveled a lot around the country (which includes tasting all the various cuisines in China) I highly recommend the experience. Especially to those visiting the country. It’s an excellent blend of tradition, innovation and creativity. Food was delish and beautifully presented. Included a performance and drink pairing I purchased aside that was excellent.
I've always been curious about what it's like to host foreign friends, and now I finally have my first experience. In just two hours, I experienced the beautiful scenery, culture, and cuisine of various parts of China. Each dish had a description, with both Chinese subtitles and English explanations, saving me a lot of talking. I could quietly enjoy the food with my friends, making it perfect for social situations where I don't want to talk too much or actively seek out topics for conversation. A special thank you to Steven for his thoughtful arrangements.
This is the perfect place to entertain international friends. Within the short two-hour meal, you can experience the beautiful scenery, culture, and cuisine of various parts of China. Each dish has a description, with Chinese subtitles and English explanations, saving you the trouble of explaining. You can quietly enjoy the food with your friends. It's especially suitable for social situations where you don't want to talk too much or find topics to discuss. A special thank you to Steven for the thoughtful arrangements. I've already been twice and will definitely come again! Keep it up!
Before going, I was worried the portions wouldn't be big enough, and I wouldn't be full. Actually, by the time the hot pot arrived, I was already stuffed, practically leaning against the wall. We went at noon, and the show officially started at 12:00. If you've bought makeup, I recommend arriving two hours early so you can change and put on makeup. If you don't, 30 to 40 minutes early is enough, so you can take photos and videos of the hallway. Enjoying the show while enjoying the food, the videos introduce the specialties of various regions across China, making you want to travel and enjoy the cuisine there. The waiters are also happy to take photos and videos with your phone. Each cuisine has its own corresponding tea, so we got to try teas from all over the world, which was a truly emotional experience.
Experience an immersive, one-stop culinary adventure at "Taste of China" restaurant. Strictly speaking, this isn't an ordinary restaurant. It's a new space created by Ctrip, combining cinematic experiences with a gourmet dining experience, located underground in the old Shanghai Municipal Government building. According to CEO Mr. Sun, this "Ctrip Restaurant" caters to international guests from all over the world. Guided by a culinary passport and led by the virtual chef "Cheng Baobao," guests can enjoy a panoramic view of China's magnificent landscapes and savor the flavors of various regions within a single dining experience. From Peking duck to grassland hot pot, from Lingnan shrimp dumplings and dim sum to sour soup fish and sweet fermented rice balls, the two-and-a-half-hour meal, guided by naked-eye 3D and interactive projections, and enhanced by the atmosphere of Sichuan opera face-changing and Shaolin monks, is a culinary tour on the dining table.
As a Chinese, I was also shocked. I originally wanted to experience the atmosphere, but I didn't expect that in addition to the performance, the food was also amazing. It really deserves the name of an immersive restaurant. If you go, be prepared. I was a little full at the end of the food because I was too hungry and ate too fast at the beginning. I want to take my children there next time. It will definitely be very fun.
Upon entering, the welcoming lady at the entrance hands everyone a "passport" menu. Scanning the menu reveals an AR panda chef, Cheng Baobao! There are plenty of photo spots in the lobby, and I highly recommend taking a photo with the 5D panda Chef Cheng Baobao on the large screen—it's beyond impressive! The food completely exceeded my expectations!
Immersive experience restaurant 🍴, first recommend Taste of China, beautiful food + visual feast, it is definitely worth a visit 👍
