The current situation in Suzhou in March, decide whether to go after reading
Suzhou has finally started to warm up, with temperatures averaging in the teens, but the temperature is still unstable. It will be warmer after April, and it is now possible to wear skirts with a sweater cardigan outside, and it's not cold when there is sunshine☀️ outside.
Currently, there is also a significant number of people, but it is much better than during holidays. It is recommended to visit Suzhou from Monday to Thursday to avoid the peak, and from Friday to Sunday, there are noticeably more tourists.
🚄Transportation:
1. Do not take taxis within the Suzhou city area, especially in the old city, as it is very congested. Use the subway or shared bicycles instead.
2. It is recommended to go to Suzhou Station, where subway lines 2/4 are available.
3. If you stay in the Gusu District, you can get up early in the morning and go out to avoid the crowds.
✅Must-visit attractions:
1️⃣ Suzhou Museum: It has the main hall and the west hall. The main hall is the current popular spot, mainly for the architecture, while the west hall is for viewing collections and cultural relics. The main hall is super hard to book, everyone now comes to Suzhou Bo to open, 'using the pink wall as paper, the bamboo as painting', a view at every step. If you can't book the main hall, you can go to the west hall.
2️⃣ Humble Administrator's Garden: The foremost of China's four famous gardens, with lotus flowers reflecting the willows, it is the most representative garden, so it is super crowded. If it is a holiday, it is not recommended to go to the Humble Administrator's Garden, go to the less popular gardens, which are also exquisite.
4️⃣ Pingjiang Road: Half of Gusu City in one Pingjiang Road. This is the abbreviation of old Suzhou, the street is not long, with small bridges and flowing water, the sound of oars, have a cup of tea, listen to the soft Wu dialect once.
5️⃣ Shantang Street: The dream of Jiangnan with misty rain, stepping into seven miles of Shantang. Come to see the night view in the evening, the moment the lights come on, small bridges, flowing water, and houses, blue bricks, and white tiles, make you think of 'spring is not late, I have arrived at the true Jiangnan'.
6️⃣ Tiger Hill: China's 'Leaning Tower of Pisa', where there are not many people, the 'first mountain in Wu' for a thousand years~~ The mountain is not high, not strenuous, the main attractions are at the top of the mountain, spend half a day to turn around.
7️⃣ Lion Grove: One of Suzhou's four famous gardens, go to the Lion Grove to see the rockery, the rockery is like a maze, a view at every step, go early, there are also many people.
8️⃣ Hanshan Temple: For that line 'Outside Gusu city is Hanshan Temple, where the midnight bell reaches the passenger boat', bring the kids to check in at Hanshan Temple. Hanshan Temple also has plain noodles, sweet Suzhou-style fine noodles, next to it is Maple Bridge.
✅Lesser-known gardens:
📍Lingering Garden: Exquisite and elegant, a view at every step, unique, the central part is the essence, with landscape as the highlight; the eastern part is courtyard architecture; the northern part is pastoral scenery; the western part has towering trees, great for taking photos in a cheongsam.
📍Couple's Garden Retreat: Themed around love, surrounded by water on three sides, facing the street on one side, very quaint, with winding paths leading to secluded spots.
📍Yi Pu: Retains the style of Ming Dynasty gardens, highly recommended, located in a quiet alley.
📍Yi Garden: Built during the Guangxu period, it is considered late among Suzhou gardens, looking forward to the blooming of magnolias in spring.
📍Ke Garden: It is the existing academy garden in Suzhou, the artistic conception of Ke Garden's plum blossoms is unmatched!
📍Canglang Pavilion: Opposite Ke Garden is Canglang Pavilion, the most ancient-style garden in Suzhou, surrounded by water on three sides, cool in summer.
📍Huanxiu Villa: The rockery inside the garden is the biggest highlight, created by the Qing Dynasty rockery master Ge Yuliang.
The Suzhou Museum is absolutely stunning! I.M. Pei's design is truly brilliant; the white walls, gray tiles, and geometric lines blend perfectly, and the light and shadow filtering through the glass roof make every step feel like walking through a painting. The exhibits are exquisite, especially the artifacts from the Wu region and the Ming and Qing dynasty calligraphy and paintings, which, like the architecture itself, exude elegance. The rockeries and reflections in the water in the courtyard perfectly combine modern aesthetics with the classical garden ambiance. A visit here is both relaxing and artistically enriching, definitely worth the wait for a reservation!
The teacher's explanation was excellent. I took my child there, and the explanation was very detailed. It had a different focus than the explanations I've had at other museums, and I learned a lot more.
The Suzhou Museum's opening day was met with widespread media coverage of the overwhelming demand and difficulty in securing tickets, a phenomenon still fresh in many people's minds. Although admission was free, advance reservations were required to reserve a specific date. Many popular tourist attractions experience similar initial surges in visitors, only to quickly become deserted once the initial novelty wears off. However, the Suzhou Museum continues to attract global visitors even on weekdays. Not during summer vacation or holidays, it's still packed with people on a random weekday. This is likely due to its sheer beauty; it's not just a museum, but a successful fusion of world-class architecture, precious artifacts, innovative exhibitions, and the aesthetics of Jiangnan lifestyle. If you have ample time, I recommend observing the changing light and shadow effects throughout the museum, especially in the central hall and corridors, to appreciate how natural light breathes life into the space through the glass ceiling.
Suzhou Museum, designed by master architect Bei Jinming, perfectly combines tradition and modernity. The north wall is in the style of Suzhou gardens with gray tiles, and the pyramid roof is bright and transparent. The indoor and outdoor scenery is magnificent, making people linger. Each exhibit tells the history of Suzhou and even China. In the long river of history, there are footprints of celebrities, such as Li Genyuan, a genius in southern Yunnan, and Suzhou, the Zhongwang Mansion of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and He Youzhi, the founder of the comic book. It is definitely worth visiting again and again to savor the beauty and wisdom that have been flowing for thousands of years.

The Suzhou Museum, designed by famous architect Pei Xuming, is a treasure trove of culture and art, which is worth a visit. The highlight is its unique architectural style, which perfectly blends tradition and modernity, and a rich collection of cultural relics, showing the deep historical heritage of Suzhou. Visiting the Suzhou Museum, I felt a wonderful experience of space-time staggering. The building itself is a work of art, and the staggering of simple lines and light and shadows is impressive. The collections in the museum are not only exquisite, but also record the historical changes of Suzhou in detail, which makes people appreciate and grow knowledge. This is not only a window to understand Suzhou, but also a good place to calm down and taste art, which makes people linger.
Suzhou Museum | Photo 📷Quick Pass! Check in for photos without people! Suzhou feels like there are so many people whenever there are people. If you want to take a beautiful photo, there are people everywhere... So! There are so many people in Suzhou Museum! You can still take a big photo without people! Here is the photo 📷Quick Pass guide! ——Photo 📷Guide—— 1️⃣ Make an appointment for Suzhou Museum in advance. I made an appointment 7 days in advance. The time period is 9:00-10:00. There are already a lot of people when the museum opens, but it’s okay. I lined up to enter the museum 10 minutes in advance. 2️⃣The first thing after entering the museum is Figure 2. If you want to take a photo, you must take it first! Because you can't come out once you enter, you will miss it (but it is not recommended to delay too long) 3️⃣ Enter the museum and there are bamboo forests in Figure 3 on both sides. It is recommended to go to the left 👈 because that is the bamboo forest, and the right is a wall with a few bamboos. At this time, no one has entered the bamboo forest, so it is a good time to take pictures (someone will enter the bamboo forest in a while, which will affect the photo taking) 4️⃣ After taking pictures, go directly outside and check in pictures 4 to 9. At this time, there is no one in the popular camera position! No need to queue! Easily take pictures! 5️⃣ Come back indoors and check in the black staircase, which is particularly artistic 6️⃣ Then almost all camera positions have been checked in, and now you can take a good look at the collections and exhibitions in the museum! You can see the exhibition and take pictures at the same time!
The Suzhou Museum is a stunning dialogue between traditional aesthetics and modern architecture. With the concept of “letting light do the design”, I.M. Pei integrated the Jiangnan style of white walls and gray tiles into the glass hall with geometric lines. As you step into the atrium, the stone rockery is reflected in the water, like a long scroll of ink painting stretching out before your eyes; the light from the hexagonal skylight is like a time filter, allowing the glaze color of the secret color porcelain lotus bowl to flow for a thousand years. The 24,000 cultural relics in the museum, such as the Code of Wu Culture: the fine gold thread carving of the Pearl Relics Pagoda, and the ink-rhymed poetry of Shen Zhou and Wen Zhengming, silently tell the elegant ingenuity of this "paradise on earth". The cultural and creative area transforms cultural relics into silk scarves and tea sets, and volunteers’ explanations are like a long bridge through history. This "free city living room" has both the beauty of a garden's changing scenery and the profound heritage of a museum. Amid the interweaving of light and shadow, Suzhou's past and future embrace each other tenderly, making it the "most Jiangnan" cultural landmark in the hearts of every visitor.
