Three-ish Days in Delhi | History, Chaos, Markets and Street Food — traveler post in Agra

Three-ish Days in Delhi | History, Chaos, Markets and Street Food

Delhi was never really a standalone trip for us. We ended up visiting the city twice, once during our trip to Agra and again while exploring Rajasthan (Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur). Altogether, we spent around three days in Delhi, with most of our time dedicated to exploring Old Delhi. Delhi is an interesting city. It is crowded, noisy, chaotic and sometimes a little overwhelming. But at the same time, there is so much history, architecture, food and everyday life happening around you. Personally, I found the contrast between Old Delhi and the more modern parts of the city quite fascinating. Exploring the Historical Side of Delhi We visited six historical landmarks during our time there. 1. Qutub Minar One of Delhi's most recognisable landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction began in the late 12th century, and the minaret stands about 73 metres tall. The intricate carvings on the red sandstone are impressive, and there are several other historical structures within the complex. We spent some time walking around and appreciating the architecture. 2. Jama Masjid Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century, Jama Masjid is one of India's largest mosques. The architecture is beautiful, but what I found equally interesting was the neighbourhood surrounding it. The narrow streets, food stalls, small shops, cycle rickshaws and constant movement of people give the area a character of its own. It is busy and chaotic, but if you want to experience the atmosphere of Old Delhi, this is definitely one of the places to visit. 3. Red Fort Another magnificent structure commissioned by Shah Jahan. The massive red sandstone walls are impressive, and the fort was once the main residence of the Mughal emperors. Having visited several Mughal forts and palaces across India, I always find it interesting to see how their architecture differs from one another. Delhi's Red Fort is certainly an important part of that history. 4. Humayun's Tomb This was one of my favourite historical sites in Delhi. Built in the 16th century, Humayun's Tomb is considered an architectural predecessor to the Taj Mahal. The combination of red sandstone, white marble, symmetrical gardens and beautiful arches makes the entire complex visually appealing. I particularly liked how spacious and well-planned the surroundings were. It is the kind of place where you can simply walk around and appreciate the architecture without feeling the need to rush. 5. Nizamuddin Dargah We also visited the shrine of the famous Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. Getting there involves walking through narrow, busy lanes lined with small shops. The atmosphere around the shrine is quite different from the other places we visited. The dargah is particularly known for its long tradition of Sufi music and qawwali. It was interesting to experience another side of Delhi's history and culture beyond the usual monuments. 6. Agrasen Ki Baoli A historical stepwell located right i

Jaipur, India | Fall into a pink fairytale city! A romantic palace tour in Rajasthan — traveler post in Agra

Jaipur, India | Fall into a pink fairytale city! A romantic palace tour in Rajasthan

Who can resist an ancient city wrapped in gentle pink? ✨ Jaipur, the "Pink City" of India's three colorful cities, is also the capital of Rajasthan. Gorgeous palaces, mirror mazes, and ancient forts—every shot is an exotic masterpiece! Many travelers get caught in tourist traps here, so save this tried-and-tested guide to easily explore this dreamy ancient city 👇 📍Basic info 📍Location: Jaipur, Rajasthan, India ⏰Best time to visit: Cool season from October–March. Temperatures are comfortable, with daytime highs in the 20s°C, perfect for visiting palaces. Avoid April–September, which are scorching hot, with summer highs reaching 45°C. ⏱Recommended duration: 2 days and 1 night. Just enough time to hit the classic spots at a relaxed pace. 🎫Tickets & travel tips ✅Visa: Indian e-visa, apply online in advance 💴Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). Many small shops in the old city only accept cash, so it is recommended to exchange money in advance 📶Internet: Buy an Indian SIM card in advance. Signal can be weak inside some forts 💡Fun fact: The city was painted pink in 1876 to welcome the British Prince. In local culture, pink represents welcome and friendliness—it is not naturally pink! 🏯Must-visit attractions 1. Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) 💐 Jaipur's landmark! An Instagram-famous pink honeycomb facade with 953 latticed windows. Ancient queens watched street parades through these windows without being seen. 👉Tip: The best photos are taken from the outside. The interior is small; if you are short on time, just snap photos from the outside. 2. Amer Fort ✨ Jaipur's top attraction! Built on a hill, it is most famous for the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace). Walls covered in tiny mirrors reflect candlelight like thousands of stars—truly breathtaking. ✅How to visit: You can ride an elephant up (not recommended due to animal welfare concerns); taking a jeep up and down is more comfortable ⏰Go in the morning for soft light and to avoid the afternoon heat 3. City Palace Still an active royal palace, half museum and half royal residence. It houses many royal treasures, and the architecture blends Indian and Islamic styles with a stunning red and pink color scheme. 4. Jantar Mantar 🔭 A World Heritage site! Massive ancient astronomical instruments that do not use electricity, relying on light and shadow to calculate time and celestial movements. The wisdom of the ancients is truly impressive. Perfect for history and culture lovers. 5. Jal Mahal A pink palace floating in the middle of a lake. You cannot go on the island, so view and photograph it from afar. The reflection on the lake at sunset is stunning; the roadside offers perfect angles for great shots. 🚗Transportation guide ✈️Getting there: Jaipur has an international airport. You can also take a train from Delhi or Agra, following the classic "Golden Triangle" route (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur) 🚕Getting around: Tuk-tuks and Ola (ride-hailing app). Always negotiate prices in advance, as drivers may overcharge ⚠️The old city roads are crowded and traffic jams are severe during peak hours 📸Top photo spots 📷 ▪️Across the street from Hawa Mahal: Panoramic shots of the pink honeycomb facade ▪️Amer Fort Mirror Palace and courtyard arches: Perfect for atmospheric portraits ▪️Jal Mahal lakeside road: Sunset reflections, wallpaper-worthy shots ▪️City Palace colorful gates: Instagram-famous colorful doors, great for portraits 👗Outfits & essentials ✅Outfits: Light pink, off-white, or cream-colored long dresses match the pink castle perfectly! Shoulders and knees must be covered in religious sites, so bring a large scarf ✅Essentials: Strong sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, face mask (the old city is dusty), stomach medicine, and mosquito repellent ✅Bag: A backpack for your belongings; carry fewer valuables ❌Avoid tank tops and mini skirts 🍛Jaipur food recommendations 🍢Rajasthani Laal Maas (spicy lamb curry): A local specialty with rich spices 🥘Dal Baati Churma: The state's national staple—lentil soup + baked dough balls + sweet crumbled dessert 🥭Fresh mango lassi: Great for cooling down and countering spice ⚠️Be cautious with street food. Prioritize bottled water and do not drink tap water directly 🗺️Recommended 2-day itinerary Day 1: Morning at Amer Fort → Afternoon at Jantar Mantar + City Palace → Sunset at Jal Mahal Day 2: Hawa Mahal photo op → Wander through the old city alleys, explore colorful markets, and shop for handmade textiles and jewelry ⚠️Tried-and-tested tips to avoid traps ❗ 1. If a "free guide" approaches you on the street, they will ask for a high tip afterward. Politely decline if you do not need one 2. When buying jewelry or handicrafts in markets, be sure to haggle hard. Markups are high, and be cautious about buying gemstones if you are not an expert 3. Forts are scorching during the day. Try to head out early and return to the hotel at noon to rest 4. Ask for permission before taking photos of locals. Photography is prohibited inside some palaces 5. Keep an eye on your phone and wallet in crowded places; beware of pickpockets in the old city 6. Elephant rides are controversial due to animal welfare concerns; consider choosing a jeep instead 💛Travel musings Walking through the old city of Jaipur, you are surrounded by gentle pink buildings, and the scent of spices fills the alleys. This is not just an Instagram-famous city; it holds a thousand years of Rajasthani royal history. Take your time exploring the palaces and soaking in the local life at the markets—this is the unique romance of India ✨ 💬Question: If you come to Jaipur, would you rather see the Amer Fort Mirror Palace or take photos of the pink facade of Hawa Mahal? Let me know in the comments!

Agra Fort

In early February, we visited Agra Fort in the afternoon, dedicating about an hour to explore this historic site. Accompanied by a private guide, we delved into the fort's rich history, which we found both captivating and informative. Navigating the fort was straightforward, though it was quite crowded during our visit. The architecture and design were impressive; however, it's worth noting that a significant portion of the fort is closed to the public, as it is currently utilized by the Indian Army. This limitation restricted access to many areas, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, we would rate our experience 4 out of 5 stars.
