Hainan Island Motorcycle Tour, West Line + East Line Day 12
Photo 1, Xixiu Beach Park Photos 2-4, Zizai Bay Photos 5-10, Qilou Old Street Photos 11-13, Yundong Library Photos 14-20, Dongpo Old Wharf 🌟Highlights: Day 12, Xixiu Beach Park — Zizai Bay — Qilou Old Street — Yundong Library — Dongpo Old Wharf On the last day, I chose a classic route within the city: having tea and taking photos at Jianwai Homestay on Qilou Old Street, watching the sunset at Yundong Library, and enjoying the night view at Dongpo Old Wharf. The advantage of touring within the city is that when you’re hungry, you can eat; when you’re tired, you can rest. I even took a nap for over an hour at noon. In the evening, I had a nice meal with local friends. It wasn’t tiring at all. Riding a small electric scooter, I could go wherever I wanted, which was very convenient. The reason for putting Haikou as the last stop, instead of playing in Haikou right after arrival and then starting the motorcycle tour, was to keep the total trip duration within two weeks. Since the progress of touring the west and east lines was uncertain, I arranged it this way. If time was tight, I might skip Haikou and visit it next time. The benefit of this approach is that it frees up time for Sanya and Wanning, allowing a more relaxed and unhurried experience in the earlier parts of the trip. In summary, this island motorcycle tour started from Haikou, first took the west line for 3.5 days, stayed in Sanya for 2 days, detoured to Yanoda Tropical Rainforest for half a day, spent 4 days on the east line (2 days in Wanning + 2 days elsewhere), and finally 2 days in Haikou city, totaling 12 days excluding major transportation. Because I didn’t visit Wuzhizhou Island or Haitang Bay in Sanya, I saved one day. Normally, Sanya requires at least 3 days. Besides that, I basically visited all the must-see spots. Haikou needs 2 days, Sanya 3-4 days, Wanning 2-3 days; if you want to experience a slower pace of life, that’s another story. Regarding the route, the east line is much more beautiful than the west line mainly because of Wanning. Overall, the seawater on the west line is not as clear as on the east line. If time is limited, you can rent a car to drive from Haikou to Sanya or from Sanya to Haikou and just explore the east line, then return the car at a different location. Focus on Haikou, Wanning, and Sanya, plus a few lighthouses and scenic viewpoints on the east line. About 8 days is enough. If you are determined to circle the island, I recommend going counterclockwise: west line first, then east line. The reasons were explained in the first travelogue, but don’t spend too much time on the west line; focus on the section from Sanya to Wanning. Recommended Attractions (in no particular order): 1. Nanshan Sea Guanyin 2. Yalong Bay 3. Yanoda Tropical Rainforest 4. Riyue Bay, Shimei Bay 5. Fenjiezhou Island (sea views are forever, I didn’t visit Wuzhizhou Island so I won’t mention it) 6. Ledong Travel Guide | Yinggehai, a Sunny Journey of Salt
This is probably my third time visiting Yinggehai Salt Field. The first time I came here, it was basically a ruin, especially the factory building, which is now the Sea Salt Culture Museum. Before, you could only look inside through the broken glass and see the traces of past production and mottled big characters. Now, with development, it has become a place to tell the history of Yinggehai Salt Field. Due to the natural geographical location and excellent climate, a grain of salt begins its sunny journey in Yinggehai, drying seawater into a silver mountain!

Hainan Qiongzhong Limu Mountain forest reserve walk
Limu (黎母山) is the island’s “mother mountain” in Li cosmology — lower-key than Wuzhishan, more water. The reserve walk is 4km of plank + dirt past waterfalls, a “mother rock” shrine, and primary forest where the birds outnumber the hikers 100:1. I went 9am — a Li ranger pointed out a 600-year-old tree with a spirit-cloth tied at its base, a stream so clear it looked edited. Entry low/¥free-ish (park donation). Stay in Qiongzhong: ¥110–160. Food: “Limu mountain red rice” ¥5, “stream crab porridge” ¥18. Mistake: comparing to Jianfengling — Limu is gentler, more sacred than spectacular. Keep voices down near the shrine. Hainan Ledong Jianfeng Ridge tropical forest plank road
Jianfengling (尖峰岭) is Hainan’s deepest tropical montane forest — 1,400m ridge, cloud pooling in the dips, a plank road through Mingfeng Valley where 300-year-old trees grow air-plants instead of bark. I walked the plank loop 8am — a trogon called once and shut up, a giant fern dripped on my neck, the “sky pool” (天池) sat still as a held breath. Entry ¥48 (Ya’jia section). Stay at Tianchi lodge ¥200–320. Food: “mountain stream fish” ¥38, “wild fern with lard” ¥14. Mistake: clear-day arrogance — the ridge makes its own rain by noon. Hainan island-loop motorcycle tour guide by locals (with tips to avoid pitfalls)
Following up on the East Line guide, by popular demand, the West Line guide is here! ⚠️ More tips to avoid pitfalls: 1️⃣ Gas prices in Hainan are high; it's recommended to fill up before boarding the ferry. 2️⃣ For the full experience, go West-in and East-out; if you're short on time, just choose the East Line. 3️⃣ Motorcycles are prohibited in Haikou and Sanya city centers, as well as on provincial highways. Hainan island-loop routes include (Fig. 2): 1️⃣ East Line (more developed than the West Line, flatter, more coastal roads) 2️⃣ West Line (better food, waiting to be explored, great for sunsets) 3️⃣ Middle Line (more rainforest, more primitive, includes tribal areas) 🛣️ Hainan Island Coastal Tourist Highway: Highly recommended for fellow motorcyclists—take this road for your island loop! This road is 1) new (completed in Dec 2023) and 2) beautiful! It runs through 12 coastal cities and counties, connecting natural and cultural landscapes, and is considered the "National Coast No. 1 Scenic Route." It's recommended to go counter-clockwise (West-in, East-out) and drive on the right to stay closer to the sea. Haikou–Danzhou–Changjiang–Dongfang–Sanya, 612 km in total 📍 Waypoints: (See Fig. 9 for the detailed version) Haikou Xinhai Port Terminal Leigong Island Hainan Liberation Park (or choose 1 of 3: Guyin Waterfall/Fushan Coffee Garden) Longmen Jilang Millennium Ancient Salt Fields Ocean Flower Island Qizi Bay (🏍️ incredibly photogenic) Yulinzhou (mountains, sea, + windmills) Yinggehai Salt Fields (great for flying drones) Huangliu Town (for snacks) Coconut Dream Corridor ——————Safe riding to complete the West Line—————— ⚠️ Note: There are few supply points on the West Line, so bring plenty of water ❗️ The Haikou–Lingao section has many hills; it doesn't matter for motorcycles 🏍️ or cars 🚗, but it's leg-breaking for bicycles 🚴. Definitely choose the island-loop highway that, while further, is wider, less crowded, more scenic, and allows for higher speeds ❗️ The Ocean Flower Island–Qizi Bay section is the best part of the West Line to ride. Recommended spot for motorcyclists: Qizi Bay. It's free and uncrowded, with a road leading toward the sea—great for telephoto shots 👍 The Dongfang section has many trucks and poor road conditions. Transportation: The positioning is not accurate at all. You can't find it by following the navigation. You must pay attention to the small roads or parking lot P signs on the roadside that lead to the beach, otherwise you can't even reach the beach. Special experience: (1) The coastline here is very long and very wide. (2) The boundary between the sea and the sky is quite obvious. The sky is full of clouds, the blue sky and the green sea are very beautiful. (3) The sand on the beach is relatively coarse, and the sand in the sea is okay, but a little finer. (4) The sea water is green, not as clear as the sea water in the southeast (Haitang Bay, Qingshui Bay). (5) The waves are not that big, much smaller than in the southeast.
