The castle is stunning! The rooms are a nice size with lovely amenities (e.g., coffee, biscuits), and the bed was comfortable with nice linens. While the room has good lighting, be sure to bring a makeup mirror for best application. The rooms are remodeled for modern times, but still maintains the charming quirkiness of an old house. Of note, the staff lack any knowledge of the castle, which is a shame given its rich history. They really could not offer any insight to the castle or its environs. I thought there would be a more "ownership" feel and someone offering to tell tales of its history. Alas, there was not. The food is delicious with a nice variety, but do not be in a hurry, as service is slow and you may have to ask twice. Plan accordingly, and let staff know if you have an appointment. We missed half of our $40 tea service because they took an excessively long time and we had to leave for a spa appointment. Oh, the spa was wonderful! Beth was fantastic! The massage and facial were reinvigorating. A+ The bar has a great vibe and makes excellent customized cocktails, but again, do not be in a hurry. If going into town, the hotel will call a taxi for you, as Uber would not come out to the castle. The ride one-way cost around £35-40 ($50). Overall, we enjoyed our stay and did not let the slow service deter our holiday. The staff are friendly and professional, they appeared to only lack experience or proper training.

Dalhousie Castle is a magical place. My wife and I got married here 10 years ago, and just went back for our 10 year anniversary. It was a wonderful trip, beautiful castle, amazing food, fantastic and helpful staff. Very reasonably priced for a castle. Absolutely would recommend staying there!

Amazing. Rooms amazing. Staff amazing. Food amazing. Ambiance amazing. Grounds amazing. Experience amazing. Shout out to some of the amazing employees Donald, Gavin, Tom and Sean! These folks went above and beyond to be super nice and well amazing! The rooms are uber comfortable with classic castle feel but modern mix. Great to walk the grounds and close to visit even more amazing places. Dungeon restaurant experience is well.. amazing. Highly recommend afternoon tea experience.. lots of tea flavors to choose from and the food is different but that is what makes it amazing. Stay in a castle with modern convenience.

Dalhousie Castle was such a beautiful and historic place to visit. The grounds were gorgeous, and the staff were all very sweet and welcoming. We really enjoyed the unique experience of dining in the dungeon restaurant with its multi-course meal, and the breakfast in the morning was also very good. Overall, it was a memorable and enjoyable stay.

Overall, this visit was a disappointment compared to our previous stay. Most of the staff came across as brisk and unfriendly, with only one or two exceptions who were pleasant and took the time to engage. Our room appeared unfinished, with exposed wires in the walls, a mirror that hadn’t been mounted, a bathroom tap that turned the wrong way, and a sink plug that didn’t function properly. These issues were surprising, especially as these features seemed to be recent additions. The layout was also poorly thought out. For instance, the fridge was placed inside the wardrobe, but both wardrobe doors had to be open to access it, which was awkward given how close it was to the bed. There were no instructions provided in the room for using the coffee machine or the heating system, nor were there any directions to the orangery for breakfast. Breakfast itself was underwhelming, especially compared to our last visit. The potato cake was consistently overcooked. On the first morning, I requested mayonnaise and, after a long wait, was given some sloppily served in a dirty mug. On the second morning, the woman who appeared to be in charge was quite rude. She ignored us upon arrival, then told us we’d have to wait for a table to be cleared—even though there were several that needed attention. It felt like poor planning, as our arrival should have been expected. We waited ten minutes for someone to take our order, and our drinks didn’t arrive until after the food. While clearing a nearby table, a younger staff member pointed out a broken jam holder to the same lady in charge, who responded—loudly enough for us to hear—with a comment: "bloody Frenchies." I can only assume this was directed at the family who had just vacated the table, which was inappropriate and unprofessional. Strangely, when a man in a suit—presumably a manager—appeared, her demeanour changed completely, and she became friendly and attentive. We dined in the Dungeon one evening. The table was noticeably wobbly, and the waitress immediately said, “I’ll get you something for that,” suggesting it was a known issue that hadn’t been addressed. We were given a piece of cork to place under the leg. While the food was of good quality, the experience was let down by slow service—there seemed to be only one waitress handling the food. Plates arrived with visible fingerprints, and when we mentioned it, we received a mumbled response that they “should have been polished.” The menus were in cheap plastic sleeves, making them difficult to read. Additionally, the option for cheese and biscuits at the end wasn’t explained clearly—it turned out to be an optional extra but was never mentioned or offered until we specifically asked. Given the cost of our stay, the overall experience fell far short of expectations. The staff largely seemed disinterested in engaging with guests. We were nearly charged for two Dungeon meals, despite only dining there once, and we have yet to receive a copy of our bill—even t

Stayed here for 2 nights with my husband. Dinner in the orangery on the first night. We had planned to eat out locally because we had read some mixed reviews about the orangery on line, but changed our minds because we were weary from travel. So pleased we did because the orangery was really good. The food was excellent and the service spot on. Top marks to Kim who served us….just lovely. We had drinks in the bar both nights. Very quiet both nights but good service and wide range of drinks available. Everyone is very friendly here. Our room was comfortable, good shower, comfy bed. Excellent breakfast both mornings. The cooked options are extensive and top quality. The hotel probably needs some updating but this is outweighed by the experience of the building itself. Fabulous grounds. We made the very short drive to Newtongrange to catch the train to Edinburgh. Free parking and good quick journey. Attended the Tattoo… amazing experience and easy journey back to the hotel. Would stay here again for sure ❤️
