Property Description
Chicago Athletic Association is an historic 1890s monument to the competitive spirit now transformed into an ultra-luxe Chicago boutique hotel with commanding views across Millennium Park to Lake Michigan. This long-vacant Venetian Gothic landmark springs back to life as a club-like mecca for inspired recreation where the spirit of play reigns supreme fueled by locally sourced luminaries from Chicago's top-flight social and culinary destinations. Its personal here, because the spirit of Chicago is a kind of club and on our team, everyone belongs. This is the club whose members swam with five-time Olympic gold medalist Johnny Weissmuller and watched Pudge Heffelfinger own so much end zone, he became footballs first pro. The courts are polished. The trophy cases dusted off. Everything here is renewed, thanks in no small part to the Herculean efforts of the builders and craftsmen who have helped us realize our vision. Our reverence for this monumental building cannot be overstated, but we want to breathe a new life into it, to care for it without treating it like a relic. That's the intent of the dynamic design duo Roman and Williams winners of the 2014 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award who are building a legacy of creating extraordinary presents with historic pasts that are more than restorations, but rather reinventions. Architect Henry Ives Cobb a charter member of The Association imbued this magical place with a Gothic fade reminiscent of the Doges Palace in Venice. Revitalized interiors once again reveal an extraordinary level of detail in the tiled floors, millwork, chandeliers, grand staircases, palatial rooms and soaring ceilings. Today, The Associations socially robust, sports-driven past lives on amid restaurants, lounges and ballrooms where a high-spirited, club-like atmosphere prevails, seamlessly melding into shared histories, past and future.

It's a beautiful hotel with great atmosphere. The location is unbeatable. Most of the staff are quite professional and kind, some have attitude that's inappropriate. The rooms are acceptable, but the bathrooms have zero conveniences like hooks or countertops if that matters to you. We wasted more towels and thus more water and laundry because there was no railings or hooks to place them on. We found it incredibly inconvenient. There were no drawers in the bedroom so everything was piled on the desk or in the small drawers in the wet bar. And no artwork. A very boring room. Being an old hotel makes no excuse for these inconveniences. Be sure to make reservations at the rooftop restaurant as even as a guest it is difficult to get a seat.

I stayed here for five nights during the Chicago Marathon. Despite the hotel being fully booked, staff responsiveness was impeccable. Daily housekeeping was truly superb. Hotel bar and restaurants were also great. Beautiful property.

Perfect location in the heart of Chicago; excellent food and beverage service (especially the rooftop dining at Cindy’s); and the fabulous Game Room — what more could a traveler want?

my 20 year-old nephew was visiting for the weekend and I wanted to give him a very special experience. We were both just blown away at how inviting every space was. We loved our room and we loved exploring different areas of the hotel. Hanging out by the fireplace in the lobby was actually a highlight of the trip for him

My recent stay at the Chicago Athletic Club started with a few positives: the dining area and lobby are visually impressive, and the game room has a cool, historic vibe. But those features are the kind you enjoy for a single visit and move on from—they don’t compensate for the issues that followed. Right from arrival, the experience became confusing. There’s no bellman or staff to help with bags, and the check-in area is oddly hidden, leaving you unsure where to go. The same lack of assistance happens when you leave—no one to help with luggage or make departure smoother. The “upgraded” room they assigned me was actually smaller than the one I originally booked. On top of that, the layout was incredibly inconvenient. I had to walk through the game room every time I wanted to access my room, which was annoying and offered no privacy at all. For a property featured in the Michelin Guide, I expected far better. The situation with my purse was equally unacceptable. After leaving it behind, I was first told by the office that they didn’t have it, then later told they did—only for it to be discovered that the wallet inside was missing. How a hotel that supposedly operates with elevated security and hospitality standards could allow something like this to happen is beyond me. Aside from Patrick—who was new, considerate, and genuinely helpful—the rest of the front desk staff were cold, short, and lacked any personality or willingness to assist. The server staff had that same detached attitude, making the entire atmosphere feel unwelcoming. After leaving, I stayed at The Peninsula, and the contrast was stark. Their service, professionalism, and overall attention to detail made me realize just how far below standard the Chicago Athletic Club truly was in comparison. Because of this, I will not be visiting the Chicago Athletic Club again.
