The antique architectural style is full of Swiss style; the enthusiasm and friendliness of the front desk lady make everyone feel like you are at home.

I love the philosophy of this hotel, sustainable development and zen! The staff is very friendly and give me good suggestions all the time! The sourdough from the bakery is extremely nice. I love their pizza, cinnamon rolls and cookie! The grill room provide delicious meat and wine! The breakfast is super yummy! The room is very cozy and warm! I love the rainforest shower, the furniture and the books! The spa centre and the garden make me relax! I will come back and recommend to everyone!

Was beyond excited about my first visit to Zermatt. A tour company booked my group into the Rex for 6 nights. My traveling companions were given a queen room which was spacious with lovely amenities appropriate in a 4 star hotel. I was booked into a single room, 38, which was like a dorm room, spare at best, with no amenities. Upon opening the door to the bathroom, a strong odor of sewage overwhelmed me. I reported this to the front desk and they responded as if this was not a new problem and they would address it. I requested another room and was willing to pay to be upgraded. Unfortunately, due to the length of my stay, to give me another room would have required 3 room changes and no upgrades were available. Despite numerous attempts to improve the situation the odor did not improve. The last attempt was the placement of a huge bottle of air freshener in the bathroom. After 2 nights, they were able to change my room to the same accommodation on the floor below, 28. Logically, this would not be better as my assumption is that sewage moves with gravity. I agreed to the change and for the first 2 nights, there wasn't an odor. The next day, the sewage smell became apparent and I reported this to the front desk. They were fully booked and unable to offer me another room. They did offer to waive the reservation cancellation fee if I chose to check out early and find another hotel. This was not a viable option as I was with a group who were happy with their accommodation. In the 2 single rooms I stayed in, in addition to the smell of sewage, I could hear people going up and down the stairs, the sound of water running, the person in the room above me and the sound of bottles being dumped in the trash. When I initially reported the odor to the front desk manager, I told him I felt like Cinderella in the single room compared to the room my traveling companions had. No offer of compensation was offered until I contacted our tour operator who negotiated a complimentary dinner for my party of 3 at their restaurant, Stockhorn. I do not feel a dinner properly compensates for 6 nights of dorm room accommodations including the smell of sewage. I have never had a problem like this in my travels and feel this should qualify as a health code violation. On the up side, their bakery made delicious bread and if they could have piped that smell into the bathroom, my stay may have been more pleasant. I WOULD STRONGLY CAUTION ANYONE FROM BOOKING A STANDARD SINGLE ROOM. If you choose to stay at the Rex, upgrade. As mentioned above the queen room was lovely.

Mixed feelings about The Rex. Here is my interpretation of the good and the bad… The good is that the Spa is wonderful, there are 2 saunas, a steam room, jacuzzi and swimming pool, which is wonderful after a full day on the slopes. Also the cocktails are brilliant, the bar tender with the beard does the best ones. The bad is the service. Both from the Chef and a few of the people that work as waitresses. At breakfast, one of the servers is a Portuguese woman who spends most of her time scrolling on her phone doing nothing. If you try and order a made to order item good luck, she constantly forgets and it’s almost like she does it on purpose so you don’t ask. We waited nearly 1 hour for porridge on one day, on another nearly 1 hour for a potato cake that wasn’t cooked when it finally arrived. They also don’t cater for food intolerance such as lactose or gluten free. One of the only places in Zermatt that doesn’t. Also, they have a wine bar that does a degustation menu at the weekend. Don’t bother! It’s absolute garbage what they serve up. They also wouldn’t tell us what the courses were, saying it was a surprise. Oh it was a surprise alright, and not the good kind. First course was good, second was a poached egg in mushroom stock, third was 1 piece of cauliflower fried in Guinness which was disgusting, 4th was 2 single carrot! That’s when we left. Absolute rubbish. Do yourself a favour and go to brasserie uno which is just down the road. The food is much better there and cooked by a decent chef. The waitress in the wine bar with glasses was extremely rude to us when we said we wanted to leave. Granted when a formal complaint was made, the hotel provided a refund. Would I go back to Zermatt, absolutely. Would I go back to The Rex or any of its restaurants? Sadly not. The great spa and cocktails isn’t enough to balance against the shocking service.

We went here for dinner and was very surprised. The service was great and the food tasted fantastic. We had pork belly and ribeye steak. The meal was cooked over coals which made it tasty. The service was quick and with a smile. If in Zermatt again would go here again.

I stayed in this hotel about 30 years ago on a one week ski trip. That stay would have been one star. I had a single room at back of hotel which ******. I note from some recent reviews that the single rooms still suck. This time I booked a superior double overlooking the Matterhorn and really enjoyed the 2 night stay. I hardly recognized the hotel since its been refurbished and modernized over the years. We saw the Matterhorn for 5 minutes since weather was cool and cloudy. However we enjoyed the room, the ambiance, the location and breakfast. Its a short walk to the main drag with many restaurants and cafes close to the Rex. Definitely five stars this time.
