Disembarkation Days on a Cruise
Disembarkation days are an essential part of any cruise. This time, we had two disembarkation days, in Fukuoka and Kagoshima. On the first day in Fukuoka, I chose a guided tour and visited the Shikanoshima Island that I had been longing to see. I finally saw the white torii gate, exactly as it appears in online photos. It was a bit touching, haha. Then, it was back to the Tenjin shopping district for some shopping, and I also checked in at 7-Eleven for their super popular fruit and vegetable cups. I almost broke the machine because I didn't know how to operate it 😭 On the second day, we explored Kagoshima on our own. I had been wanting to visit a restaurant in Sengan-en Garden, and I took photos from the same spot as others. Getting the perfect shot is a serious business. The taxi fare from the port was over 200, which was painful enough, and then we had to queue for over half an hour for a scenic spot! While we were eating, my younger brother suddenly said he wanted to see the volcanic ash at the foot of the volcano. Me?? Excuse me?? Is this the kind of imagination kids have? So, we took a bus and then the cruise ship to Sakurajima. That wasn't the end of it. We then took a shuttle bus for an hour to the observation deck to see the volcano. You can live a happy, isolated life at sea, doing only three things every day: eating, playing, and sleeping, briefly escaping the pressures of everyday life. It's especially great for family trips. You don't have to compromise your personal interests for group activities. Everyone can find something they're interested in, and you can even visit Japan and South Korea without a visa. Tsuna Shiki Tenmangu Shrine
Tsuna Shiki Tenmangu Shrine is located in Chikujo District, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is said that in 901, Sugawara no Michizane took refuge on the coast of Shiida due to a storm while on his way to Dazaifu. At that time, he rested at a place where villagers had laid out fishing nets. This is the origin of Tsuna Shiki Tenmangu Shrine. The Mizutaki (chicken hot pot) from Hakata uses high-quality soup, ingredients, and vinegar & soy sauce that can be enjoyed until the end. Once you enjoyed the chicken, the waiter will help cook the congee using the soup left-behind. Aside the Mizutaki, the dinner set also comes with rich variety of appetizers including Basashi, the fresh horse meat sashimi. But that depends on the set you have chosen. Coming to the price, i think It was a bit expensive and the bill came around 13000 yen for 2. But totally worth it and value for money if you want to try Mizutaki. We took a course and the appetizers and deserts were top notch. You can ask to add vegetables unlimited times. There are three branches in Fukuoka City, and this time we visited the Hakata branch, which is just a 3-minute walk from the west exit of Hakata Station! The restaurant uses a scanning system for ordering and offers multiple language options for customers, which is very considerate! #fukuokatrip Very peaceful shrine, even thought I went to the wrong place at first because there was no one. Good place to give your prayers and clear your mind. In between Tenjin and Hakata but it’s walkable.A small shrine that is nice to visit and relax in on your way to wherever you are going. No need to go out of your way to see it though, because there's not really much to see. But if you are in the area might as well pass by!

According to locals, fukusaya has the best castella cake and it is the oldest castella bakery. You can buy it as a small piece of cake or a full block. The former cost 324yen, while the latter cost 2268yen for a full block of cake. I tried their small slice of castella and I immediately fell in love with it. It has a soft fluffy texture, with it being very fragant and delicious. It is best paired with coffee or tea and it is not overly sweet. Fukusaya's castella is awesome. Try it to believe it.

Casual Teppanyaki
This trip was truly spontaneous. Without much of a planned itinerary, I woke up craving teppanyaki and decided to find a place in the mall next to the hotel. JR Hakata City offers a wide variety of dining options, from sushi and sashimi to mentaiko, eel rice, and sukiyaki. You name it, they have it. We ended up at a teppanyaki restaurant called Ten. We didn't make a reservation, so the teppanyaki seats were full. We couldn't watch the chef's performance up close, but sitting in the main hall was fine too. Judging by the menu, it wasn't a top-tier teppanyaki place. However, eating locally, it shouldn't be too bad, I guessed. I ordered a lunch set. The salad portion was quite large, but the presentation was average, and the vegetables weren't particularly fresh. It was just okay. Next came the beef, served in a portion that would fill you up. The heat control was decent; the texture wasn't tough but didn't melt in your mouth either. With a bit of rock salt and garlic slices, it was good but not exceptional. The staff brought out a dessert cart, which might have been the highlight of the meal. Various cakes, macarons, and puffs were available for you to choose from, letting you indulge to your heart's content. Since traveling is all about eating around, I only picked a strawberry cake and a macaron to taste. There's no denying that Japanese strawberries are sweet, making the otherwise ordinary-looking cake surprisingly delicious. The macaron was just average. After that, everyone got a piece of brownie with ice cream and a cup of rich coffee to end the lunch. Alright! Let's go somewhere else for afternoon tea later!

The Yanagawa River Cruise was one of the most relaxing and charming experiences I had in Fukuoka! Yanagawa is a historic town known for its beautiful canals, and taking a boat ride here feels like stepping back in time. The small wooden boats, known as "donkobune," are guided by local boatmen who use long poles to navigate the waterways. As we drifted through the peaceful canals, the guide sang traditional songs and shared interesting stories about the town’s history. The scenery was lovely, with weeping willows lining the riverbanks and traditional Japanese houses along the way. After the cruise, I tried the famous local dish, unagi no seiro-mushi (steamed eel over rice), which was absolutely delicious! If you’re looking for a unique and tranquil experience near Fukuoka, I highly recommend the Yanagawa River Cruise—it’s a perfect way to experience traditional Japan!
