Road conditions: June is rainy season, landslides may occur on Highway 318, check road conditions before departure 💬 Blogger’s Honest Thoughts Having traveled Highway 318 many times, I always stop for two days at Ranwu because Ranwu Lake is just too beautiful. In June, the lake water is as blue as a gem, paired with distant snow mountains, any photo looks like a Windows desktop. Laigu Glacier is truly breathtaking. Standing at the foot of the glacier, looking at the huge blue ice tongue, you feel the smallness of humans and the greatness of nature. Hiking on the glacier, listening to the sound of melting ice, the feeling is truly magical. June is the perfect time to visit Ranwu, with comfortable temperatures, not too hot or cold, and fewer tourists than summer vacation. The lake water is at its bluest of the year, and the glacier hasn’t fully melted yet. If you travel Highway 318, be sure to stay two days at Ranwu, don’t just pass through. Here, you will see the most beautiful lake scenery in Eastern Tibet, touch glaciers millions of years old, and experience the most authentic Tibetan life. Ranwu is worth a special visit. --- Accommodation 🏨 Songtsam Laigu Mountain Residence At 4200 meters altitude, currently the highest Songtsam hotel, the entire hotel is embedded on a cliff facing the glacier, surrounded by snow mountains, with 24-hour oxygen supply, the pinnacle of Tibetan wild luxury 🏨 Hushan No.1 Villa Opening in 2025, beside Ranwu Lake and facing the mountains, 24-hour constant temperature heating, rooms with independent diffused oxygen supply, window views of green mountains and lake water 🏨 Pingcuo Kang Sang Basu Ranwu Lake Oxygen-rich Hotel Four-star accommodation in Basu, with a super high rating of 9.6, excellent quality and value, complete oxygen system, attentive service, a comfortable haven on Highway 318 🏨 Basu Ranwu International Self-driving RV Camping Site By Ranwu Lake, beautiful environment, starry sky rooms + high-altitude viewing platform, full charging stations, coffee shop and bar facilities, an excellent choice for self-driving camping

The rain stopped in the early morning. Pushing open the wooden window of the inn, a cool breeze hit my face—not the kind of bone-chilling cold, but a fresh, moist chill carrying the scent of earth and pine needles, like biting into a green apple just taken out of the fridge. Ranwu Lake lay outside in the morning light, still not fully awake. The water surface was unbelievably calm. The rain had washed everything clean—the distant snow-capped mountains looked whiter, the nearby coniferous forest greener, and even the sky had changed from gray to a soft blue. A thin layer of mist floated on the lake, moving slowly along the water’s surface, as if someone was gently lifting a blanket. I walked to the lakeshore, and the water droplets on the grass wet the tips of my shoes. The lake water was milky green; after the rain, Ranwu Lake was clearer than usual, allowing me to see stones several meters deep beneath the surface. A few wild ducks swam over from the opposite shore, trailing long V-shaped ripples that shattered the reflection of the snow mountains, then pieced it back together. I crouched down to look at a blade of grass. Five or six water droplets hung on the leaf, each round and transparent like tiny lenses. Looking closer—the droplets reflected the snow mountain, complete, small, and edged with gold. I reached out and gently touched the leaf. The droplets rolled off, falling into a puddle with a soft “tap.” Standing up, I walked along the lakeside for a while. The air carried a unique sweetness after the rain, a mix of pine resin and wet earth. Taking a deep breath, the coolness reached my lungs, opening all my pores. In the distance, the Laigu Glacier shimmered blue through gaps in the clouds; they say that blue is the color formed after millions of years of ice compression. Back at the inn, the landlady was hanging sheets in the yard. The white sheets billowed in the breeze like sails. “The weather is good today,” she smiled, “you can see the whole snow mountain.” I held a cup of butter tea and sat under the porch. The salty aroma of the hot tea mixed with the fresh post-rain air, creating an indescribable comfort. The thin mist on the lake was dissipating, and the snow mountain gradually revealed its full form. No need to visit any tourist spots. Sitting by Ranwu Lake, watching the mist clear, the clouds part, and the snow mountain reflected in the water droplets is enough to fill the whole morning. This rain seemed to have fallen just for me. It washed Ranwu Lake clean, waiting for me to come and see it.

Sisters, I’m willing to call Ranwu Lake the "masterpiece" of National Highway 318! The lake’s blue is unreal, and the reflection of the snow-capped mountains feels like stepping into a painting. Please keep this firsthand travel guide~ 🌍【Location】 Ranwu Lake is in Baxoi County, Chamdo, Tibet, at an altitude of 3,850 meters. It is the source of the Palongzangbu River, a tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Formed by a landslide, it stretches over 20 kilometers, surrounded on all sides by snow-capped mountains, looking like another world. ✨【Three Must-See Spots】 1️⃣ Upper Ranwu Viewing Platform Be sure to get there before sunrise! Morning mist floats over the lake, and the Lhagu Glacier is perfectly reflected in the water. Using a telephoto lens, every shot looks like a masterpiece. 2️⃣ Middle Ranwu Pasture A place where Tibetan herders graze their cattle and sheep, very healing. In November, the golden grass contrasts beautifully with the deep blue lake, making every casual photo stunning. 3️⃣ Lower Ranwu Secret Spot Navigate to "Kangsha Village," then walk about 20 minutes along a dirt road to find a little-known viewing spot. The whole lake is quiet and all yours. 🚗【Transportation】 Recommended route: Nyingchi → Bomi → Ranwu, about 6 hours by car. It’s best to rent a car or drive yourself. The road conditions on National Highway 318 are good, but prepare snow chains for November. 🏡【Where to Stay】 Stay at a Tibetan-style guesthouse by the lake for the full experience! I stayed at "Ranwu Lakeside Home," with windows facing the snow mountains. You can see the golden sunlight on the peaks as soon as you open your eyes in the morning. Only about 150 RMB per person. 🍵【What to Eat】 Tibetan yak meat hotpot is a must! Paired with butter tea and barley cakes, it warms you up and helps with altitude sickness. The town’s "Ama Kitchen" serves authentic Tibetan food. 📅【3-Day Itinerary】 Day 1: Arrive at Ranwu → Upper Ranwu Viewing Platform → Stay by the lake Day 2: Hike at Middle Ranwu Pasture → Lower Ranwu Secret Spot → Experience a Tibetan family visit Day 3: Lhagu Glacier day trip (adjust based on your energy) 💡【Tips】 Big temperature difference between morning and night in November, don’t forget your down jacket and thermal underwear The plateau is so dry it’s unbelievable, bring lip balm and moisturizer Carry some glucose oral solution for emergencies with altitude sickness Always ask before taking photos, don’t randomly shoot Tibetan people or prayer flags Standing by Ranwu Lake, watching the snow mountains sink into the crystal-clear blue water, I felt completely calm. No crowds, just the purest beauty between heaven and earth. Before the heavy winter snow closes the roads, hurry and experience this visual feast!

🚗 One of the most frequently asked questions about coming to Lhasa is whether you will suffer from altitude sickness. This is also why many friends hesitate to visit Tibet. Are taking Altitude Sickness Pills or Rhodiola effective? About altitude sickness: 🚗 Lhasa is at an altitude of 3,650 meters. For friends coming from low-altitude southern cities, it is unrealistic not to experience some altitude sickness upon arrival. The body needs an adaptation period of about 3-5 days. It is not recommended to engage in strenuous exercise on the day you arrive. Sister Yingzi suggests resting quietly in the hotel (it is recommended to choose a hotel with diffuse oxygen supply). Avoid overeating and drinking alcohol on the first day. ⚠️ About 💊: Rhodiola and Altitude Sickness Pills are basically a scam. If you have a headache upon arrival and have trouble sleeping that night, it is recommended to have glucose, An S brain tonic, and Xin Nao Xin tablets on hand to help relieve insomnia and headaches. Getting enough sleep can greatly alleviate altitude sickness. If you experience vomiting or chest tightness, please seek medical attention promptly. Nearby clinics have effective treatments for altitude sickness, so there is no need to panic. ⚠️ About the itinerary: For people around 60 years old with enough time, it is better to land in Nyingchi. Nyingchi is at about 3,000 meters altitude, with lush vegetation and higher oxygen content, making it easier to adapt to altitude sickness. Overweight friends should be more cautious. Children generally do not have major issues. During the trip, we usually prepare a 10-liter medical oxygen tank, which can provide continuous nasal oxygen for about 10 hours. 👉【Itinerary】: 🧡D1: Pick up at Nyingchi Airport — Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon — Suosong Village 🧡D2: Namcha Barwa Peak — Yani Wetland — Alpine Pasture Afternoon Tea — Lulang Town 🧡D3: Guxiang Lake — Bomi Peach Blossom Valley Loop — Bomi 🧡D4: Blue Tears · Ranwu Lake — Lhagba Glacier 🧡D5: Bomi — Gang Yun Spruce Forest — Gala Peach Blossom Village — Nyingchi 🧡D6: Nyingchi — Lhasa Beautiful Lhasa welcomes everyone! I hope Sister Yingzi’s notes can help you. Wishing everyone a pleasant journey!

The "wildest route" in Eastern Tibetan Sichuan, from Chengdu to Lhasa, lets you experience the breathtaking snow mountains, sacred lakes, forest seas, and sky roads all in one trip. This is the ultimate joy of self-driving! ✨ Key Highlights of the Route 1. Yala Snow Mountain: A sacred mountain you encounter just after leaving Danba. The snow-capped peak framed by grasslands and Tibetan villages looks like a painting, and every snapshot is wallpaper-worthy. 2. Sister Lakes: On the road from Litang to Mangkam, two azure lakes nestle at the foot of the snow mountains, serene and sacred. Stopping to feel the breeze is truly healing. 3. Dongda Mountain + Seventy-Two Bends: Iconic sections of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. The high-altitude sea of clouds at Dongda Mountain and the thrilling switchbacks of the Seventy-Two Bends maximize the excitement of self-driving. 4. Ranwu Lake + Lhag Glacier: The lake’s water is as blue as a gem, surrounded by snow mountains and glaciers. Driving along the lakeshore feels like entering a fairy tale world. 5. Namcha Barwa Peak: On the way from Lulang to Nyingchi, this is known as "China’s most beautiful snow mountain." Seeing its full view is definitely the luckiest moment of the trip. 6. Yamdrok Lake: Near Lhasa, this lake’s water shows distinct layers of blue. Every frame while driving around the lake is a visual feast. 7. Nyingchi Peach Blossom Valley: From March to April, peach blossoms bloom wildly at the foot of the snow mountains, allowing you to enjoy peach blossoms and snow mountains at the same time. 🚗 Self-Driving Tips ▫️ Some road sections are complex; it’s recommended to drive a rugged off-road vehicle and prepare snow chains and a spare tire. ▫️ Be mindful of altitude sickness in high-altitude areas; bring oxygen tanks and common medications in advance. ▫️ Supply points are far apart along the way; keep your fuel tank above half and carry some snacks and water with you.

They say Namcha Barwa, "unseen by nine out of ten," is the most generous gift this winter has given us. And the place to witness this luck is Songtsam Namcha Barwa Mountain Residence in Milin. It is located deep in the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, in a village facing the snow-capped mountain—not just to "see" the scenery, but to truly "live within" it. 🚙 Arrival marks the beginning of a pilgrimage: Departing from Nyingchi Milin Airport, drive about 2.5 hours along the Yarlung Tsangpo River, with magnificent scenery all the way. The hotel is in Dalin Village, seemingly within arm’s reach of the snow mountain. Songtsam’s classic Tibetan stone architecture perfectly blends with the village. Upon entering the lobby, behind the entire glass wall, the sharp triangular main peak of Namcha Barwa greets you, prompting gasps from everyone. 🛖 Indigenous culture and ultimate comfort: The rooms continue Songtsam’s signature style: traditional Tibetan furniture, handmade textiles, copper bathtubs, but with underfloor heating, humidifiers, and oxygen supply equipment to ensure extreme comfort at high altitude. Our room had a balcony facing the snow mountain; doing nothing all day but watching the light and shadows move across the mountain is a supreme pleasure. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parent-child moments in dialogue with the sacred mountain: Golden sunlight guardian: Winter is the best season to view Namcha Barwa, with stable weather and high visibility. The hotel informs guests of the next day’s sunrise time. In the early morning, either in the room or on the third-floor viewing platform, wait for the first ray of sunlight to dye the mountain peak golden. The awe of that moment will be remembered by children for life. Easy hiking to explore the canyon: The hotel butler can lead light village hikes to a more open riverside viewing platform, offering different perspectives of the sacred mountain. Along the way, you pass barley fields and walnut groves, with pristine and peaceful scenery. Tibetan family visit experience: Songtsam arranges visits to local Tibetan families to taste butter tea and tsampa and learn about their daily lives. This is a very precious cultural experience. Starry sky class: If the weather is clear, the night sky is dazzling. You can tell children stories about constellations and search for the Milky Way. 🍛 Warm Tibetan feast: The hotel cuisine combines local ingredients with exquisite cooking. Hot matsutake chicken soup, yak meat, Tibetan fragrant pork, and Nyingchi’s specialty hand-shaped ginseng all replenish energy well. At high altitude, it is recommended to eat until 70% full and drink plenty of hot water. 📌 Nyingchi winter plateau travel tips: Altitude sickness prevention: The hotel is about 3,000 meters above sea level, which most people can adapt to. But move slowly and avoid bathing on the first night. Rooms have diffused oxygen supply available anytime. Extreme warmth: The canyon is warm in the sun during the day but extremely cold and windy in the early morning and evening. Prepare thick down jackets, hats, scarves, gloves, and thermal underwear. Transportation: It is recommended to rent a car in Nyingchi or book Songtsam’s transfer service. Mountain roads are winding, so be cautious. Booking: Songtsam hotels are very popular, especially rooms with mountain views. Be sure to book months in advance on Trip.com. Itinerary connection: You can link Songtsam Linka in Bomi or Laigu Mountain Residence to complete an in-depth southeastern Tibet loop trip. At Songtsam, time takes on a different dimension. Children learn to wait quietly and cheer for the appearance of a ray of light. When Namcha Barwa finally unveils its full face, he quietly says, “Dad, the mountain is shining.” Perhaps this is the best education travel can offer—about nature, reverence, and beauty.

1️⃣ Plan Your Route in Advance: Determine the attractions you want to visit and your general itinerary in advance. This allows you to book transportation and accommodation more reasonably, avoiding last-minute decisions that can increase costs. For example, plan whether to take the classic Lhasa - Namtso - Shigatse loop or the Nyingchi - Bomi - Ranwu Lake route. 2️⃣ Choose the Right Season: The cost of traveling to Tibet varies greatly depending on the season. During the off-season (generally from November to March), airfares and hotel prices drop significantly, and there may be discounts on entrance fees to attractions. Additionally, there are fewer tourists, making for a better travel experience. Transportation 3️⃣ Choose Flexible Transportation: In Tibet, public transportation such as buses is affordable. For example, minibuses in Lhasa cost just a few yuan to reach many places. On some tourist routes, carpooling can help share costs and allow you to meet fellow travelers. 4️⃣ Look for Discounts: Airlines and railway companies sometimes offer special promotions for tourist destinations. Keep an eye on related information in advance to snag heavily discounted air or train tickets. Accommodation and Dining 5️⃣ Choose Cost-Effective Accommodation: Use online travel platforms to compare prices and reviews of different hotels and guesthouses, and choose a place that is well-located and budget-friendly. Youth hostels are also a good option, with lower prices for dormitory beds and opportunities to exchange travel experiences. 6️⃣ Try Local Snacks: Tibet has many unique and inexpensive snacks, such as Tibetan noodles, sweet tea, and yak yogurt. You can taste authentic flavors at street-side shops, saving money while experiencing local food culture. Sightseeing 7️⃣ Buy Combo Tickets: Some attractions offer combo tickets, which are more cost-effective than buying individual tickets for each site. For example, the Potala Palace and Norbulingka combo ticket. 8️⃣ Know Free Admission Days: Some attractions have specific free admission days. Do your homework in advance and visit on these days to save on entrance fees. Other Tips 9️⃣ Prepare Common Medications: Bring common medications for altitude sickness, colds, and digestive issues to avoid high medical costs and ensure a smooth trip. 🔟 Learn Basic Tibetan and Local Customs: Knowing some simple Tibetan greetings can make locals feel your friendliness and might even get you small discounts in some situations. Understanding local religious customs and cultural taboos can help avoid unnecessary trouble and extra expenses.

🚗 Laigu Glacier is a group of glaciers located in Ranwu Town, Basu County, Changdu, Tibet, adjacent to Ranwu Lake, which is the source of Parlung Zangbo. The melted snow flows into Ranwu Lake, and there are dense primitive forests and many primitive Tibetan villages by the lake, including Meixi, Yalong, Ruoqiao, Dongga, Xiongjia and Niuma glaciers. Among these glaciers, Yalong Glacier is the most spectacular. The "Yalong Glacier" is 12 kilometers long, extending from the main peak of Gangri Gabu Mountain at an altitude of 6606 meters to Gangri Gabu Lake at an altitude of 4,000 meters. In terms of climate, it is located in the main channel for the Indian Ocean monsoon to transport cold air to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with sufficient precipitation, which is conducive to the development of glaciers and is a maritime glacier. 🚗 I came with a group this time, so I only walked the regular tourist route. Laigu Glacier is a group of glaciers, and I should have gone to one of them. Overall, I didn't feel it was difficult, and it's not like what the internet says about needing to ride a horse. I walked from the shuttle bus terminal to the innermost ice wall and back in an hour and a half with photos. The scenery is very good when the weather is good. 🚗 Some precautions 1. Be sure to pay attention to altitude sickness, you know your own body, there is no need to ride a horse but don't force it if your body can't handle it. 2. Be sure to pay attention to safety when going down, it is best to rent ice claws at the mouth of the glacier, after all, you are responsible for your own safety. 25y. 3. Currently, the big ice wall is not open. I went in today and walked straight in along the right side, no one stopped me so I thought it was open. There is some lake water near the ice wall that is not frozen. When I was about 20m away from the wall, someone shouted at me that it was dangerous and I couldn't go, so I hurried back. 4. If you live in Songzan or go to another glacier inside, you can drive in by yourself, you can ask in advance. 5. I don't know if all the glaciers in China are like this, there is no leader to play with. I have been to Alaska and Iceland and there are guides to walk the designated route all the way. Don't go to places without footprints on the glacier, pay attention to safety.

Laigu Glacier is a general term for a group of glaciers, located in Ranwu Town, Basu County, Changdu, Tibet, adjacent to Ranwu Lake. Among the Laigu Glacier group, the Yalong Glacier is the most spectacular, extending from the main peak of Gangrigabu Mountain at an altitude of 6606 meters to Gangrigabu Lake at an altitude of 4,000 meters. Laigu Glacier is one of the three major glaciers in the world and the source of the Parlung Tsangpo. 🌟Highlights: The blue ice cave is extremely shocking 👍Most recommended: The blue ice cave has to go to the foot of the snow mountain at the end, it tests perseverance and persistence 🚉Travel strategy: Navigate to the entrance of Laigu Glacier Scenic Area, the sightseeing car inside takes another 40 minutes, and then you need to walk or ride a horse to reach the first glacier, which takes about 40 minutes on foot. If you want to enter the innermost glacier to see the blue hole, you need to rent a car from the local villagers to go in. The road is very dangerous and it takes about 40 minutes to drive. 💰Average consumption: The entrance ticket plus sightseeing car is 210 yuan, and there are discounts on general platforms. The first glacier rides a horse for 100 per person. The glacier inside rents a car for 300 per person. Although it is expensive, it is worth it ⏳Play time: I stayed for a whole day

Cross the Anjula Mountain pass, and step by step, you will fall from the vast plateau lakes into the lush, temperate forests of Bomi. The blue of Ranwu Lake, the chill of the glaciers, and the endless flow of the Parlung Tsangpo River. A 3-day journey with fluctuating altitudes, where you see wilderness and enter dense forests. There is no need to chase every sight; the best gift of Tibet is being on the road, letting your heart slowly calm down. Option 1 | Relaxed pace (Recommended: self-driving, no rushing, balancing scenery and rest, avoiding altitude sickness and exhaustion.) Day 1: Basu — Ranwu Town | Stay near Ranwu · Morning: Depart from Basu, cross the Anjula Mountain pass at 4,475m. It's a gentle meadow; stop for quick photos, but don't stay long to prevent altitude sickness. · Noon: Arrive in Ranwu Town for lunch. · Afternoon: Explore Ranwu Lake. Prioritize Middle Ranwu Lake, where the water color is best. Stroll slowly along the various viewing platforms by the lake, watch the snow-capped mountains reflected on the water, and catch the sunset over the lake in the evening. · Evening: Stay in Ranwu Town and get some rest early. Accommodation options: Before departing from Basu, prioritize hotels with oxygen supply. Choose one that offers oxygen, breakfast, and convenient parking for self-driving, making it perfect for resting. Day 2: Ranwu Town — Midui Glacier — Bomi | Stay in Bomi · Early morning: Morning view of Ranwu Lake. The lake surface is calm with no wind, creating a perfect mirror effect. · Morning: Drive to Midui Glacier. Buy a ticket for the shuttle bus, hike to the viewing platform, and see the ice waterfall up close. If you're not feeling up to the hike, you can ride a horse. Note that the temperature in the glacier area is low, so wear a thick jacket. · Afternoon: Drive along the Parlung Tsangpo River towards Bomi. Enjoy the canyons, forests, and river views along the way, stopping to take photos as you go. · Arrive in Bomi County in the evening. Day 3: In-depth leisure in Bomi (Choose one: Gangyun Spruce Forest / Stroll around the county town) Choose one: A. Natural scenery: Visit Gangyun Spruce Forest for primeval forests, meadows, and streams. Hike to get some fresh air and experience the greenery of Tibet's "Little Jiangnan." B. Relaxed culture: Stroll around Bomi County, walk along the Parlung Tsangpo River, eat stone pot chicken, buy local specialties, and relax to recharge for the next leg of your journey. ✅ Tips: 1. The color of Ranwu Lake changes with the seasons; it's a bit murky in May–June and crystal clear blue in September–October. 2. The hike to Midui Glacier takes about 2 hours round trip. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and gloves. Do not get close to ice crevasses. 3. The altitude fluctuates significantly. Avoid strenuous running or jumping, drink plenty of water, and be prepared for extreme temperature differences between day and night. Option 2 | Fast-paced itinerary (Suitable for tight schedules) Day 1: Basu → Ranwu Lake. Continue driving in the evening instead of staying in Ranwu; drive directly to Bomi and stay overnight in Bomi. Day 2: Round trip from Bomi to Midui Glacier, return to Bomi. Day 3: Bomi Gangyun Spruce Forest, free time in the afternoon. Cons: The first day involves a very long drive and is quite tiring. Not recommended for those who have just entered Tibet and are prone to altitude sickness.

Almost everyone driving the 318 to Tibet ends up taking a photo—at Ya'an's Jinjiguan, posing with their car and the "Zero Kilometer" landmark. 🛞 I did the same. This is the China Ya'an 318 Road Trip Base, located in Jinjiguan, Yucheng District, right next to the Jinjiguan exit of the Chengdu-Ya'an Expressway. It is the zero-kilometer starting point of the Sichuan-Tibet (Kang-Tibet) Highway and the center point of National Highway 318. It is now a national AAA-level tourist attraction. The core is the 318 Highway Culture Experience Center. The venue opened in 2024, jointly built by Ya'an Communications Construction Group and the China Highway and Transportation Society, and is divided into four major exhibition halls. "Endless Road" tells the construction history of the 318 from nothing to something, "Endless Scenery" uses a 70-meter LED screen and glasses-free 3D to bring the snow-capped mountains and canyons along the way right in front of you, and "A Must-Drive in This Lifetime" is filled with the adventure and passion of road trippers. Next to it is the 318 Miniature Museum, which condenses the essence of this national highway from Shanghai to the China-Nepal border into one place. On the starting plaza, the "Zero Kilometer" landmark made of vintage Jiefang brand truck tires is very eye-catching. The ground is marked with "318: A Must-Drive in This Lifetime" and the distance from Ya'an to Lhasa. Every road tripper will press the shutter here for the first step of their journey to Tibet. 📸 If you want to stay longer, there is an eco-friendly RV campsite here, where camping, supplies, and rest can all be done in one stop, so there's no need to rush. There are also plenty of things to do nearby, such as seeing giant pandas at Bifengxia, taking a slow stroll through Shangli Ancient Town, or finding a wisp of tea fragrance at the China Tibetan Tea Village. You can easily plan for half a day to a full day. 🐼 Standing at zero kilometer, it's worth understanding its history first. Ya'an has been an important route to Tibet since ancient times and is also the starting point of the Sichuan-Tibet Tea Horse Road. The footprints of porters once carried baskets of Ya'an tea into the snowy regions. In April 1950, the Kang-Tibet Highway (now the Sichuan-Tibet Highway) broke ground at Jinjiguan; in December 1954, the highland sky road from Ya'an to Lhasa opened to traffic. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians, relying on steel drills and shovels, crossed mountains and ridges, carving the "Two Roads" spirit into this road. Starting from here, along the 318 South Line, Erlang Mountain, Luding Bridge, Zheduo Mountain, Xinduqiao, Litang, Ranwu Lake, and Lulang Forest Sea will accompany you all the way until Lhasa. 🏔️ 📍 Practical information: The experience center is open from approximately 9:00 AM–6:00 PM; for navigation, search "Ya'an 318 Road Trip Base." It is accessible directly from the Jinjiguan exit of the Chengdu-Ya'an Expressway. There is a parking lot and a supply center. It is recommended to call to confirm specific exhibition activities before your trip. This is the first article in my 318 series. Starting from "zero," let's take the road ahead slowly. 🤍 Follow "Ai Liuda de Zhang Sir" to unlock more guides for office workers to shake off work fatigue. Where do you plan to stop for your first stop on the 318? Let's chat in the comments section, or forward this to the person you've agreed to go to Tibet with.

Suitable for those traveling along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway who want to see the autumn colors of plateau lakes. Ranwu Lake features autumn leaves, snow-capped mountains, and reflections on the water. When the weather turns overcast, you can shift your focus to the layers of lakeside villages and mountain forests. Autumn colors and morning mist depend on the daily weather, so they are not guaranteed. For accommodation, choose Ranwu Town or lakeside villages to easily explore the upper, middle, and lower sections. To reach these areas from G318, renting a car or booking a local chartered vehicle in advance is recommended. Avoid relying on last-minute ride-sharing when public transport connections are uncertain. Bring windproof and warm clothing, and be mindful of the strong plateau sun and temperature differences between day and night when staying by the lake. Day 1 | Middle Section: Bangcuo Lake and Ranwu Town The Bangcuo Lake area has a more rustic, village feel. Start by walking along the shore to see the water, forests, and Tibetan-style houses, then take a leisurely stroll near Ranwu Town, keeping an eye out for the white stupas and prayer halls by the lake. On clear days, wait for the wind to die down to see the reflections. If the clouds are low, focus on the nearby grasslands, cottages, and mountain forest belts instead of waiting for the distant snow-capped peaks. For lunch, find a local restaurant in Ranwu Town to try Tibetan noodles, butter tea, and other common Tibetan dishes. Stay in the town or by the lake, and head to the upper section on the second day. Day 2 | Upper Section: Yangcuo Lake and the Laigu Direction Yangcuo Lake has clear water, and the reflections of the lakeshore and mountains are the highlight here. The time before and after the wind picks up in the morning and evening is best for observing changes in the water. On clear days, choose a spot along the accessible roads to stop. If it rains or gets foggy, focus on the near-shore water and the layers of clouds sweeping across the mountains, and avoid walking to slippery banks just to find a view. Laigu Glacier is located within Ranwu Town, right next to Ranwu Lake, but as of June 2026, official announcements indicate it remains closed to the public. Only consider it for distant viewing if you confirm it has reopened before you depart. Do not approach the ice, and do not enter closed areas without authorization. If there is rain, snow, low clouds, or poor road conditions, stay around Yangcuo Lake and do not make the glacier a mandatory stop. Day 3 | Lower Section: Leng'anjiabu Lake and the Ranwu Lake Outlet The lower section, Leng'anjiabu Lake, is a great place to wrap up your trip by watching the lake water extend outward, then head to the Ranwu Lake outlet to observe the landscape changes where the water flows into the Parlung Tsangpo River. When the sky is clear, you can look back at the snow-capped mountains and the lake. If the weather turns bad, make a short stop to see the near-shore water, river valley, and mist, and avoid rushing to find distant views when visibility is low. Have lunch in Ranwu Town, then continue along your Sichuan-Tibet Highway route. If you need to pick up luggage on your way back, allow enough time to return to your accommodation. These three days are arranged by the middle, upper, and lower sections. If you encounter bad weather, focus your time that day on the near-shore areas and villages in your current section. The weather at Ranwu Lake changes quickly. Please check the latest announcements from the Baxoi County Government and Qamdo Culture and Tourism Bureau regarding the opening status of Laigu Glacier and road information before you depart.

"Conquer the 72 dangerous bends, and the road ahead is smooth sailing" After driving around Tibet for over 2 months, visiting Namtso and crossing Mount Sejila, I thought I had been spoiled by Tibet's magnificent scenery. But when I finally stood at the Yela Mountain Pass and looked down at the Nujiang 72 Bends from my drone, the breathtaking impact was still irreplaceable. The winding roads spiraling over the reddish-brown canyon—you have to fly high to truly appreciate the breathtaking beauty of its lines. For fellow road-trip and drone photography enthusiasts, I've put together a super practical guide on photo spots & tips to avoid pitfalls. Save this before you head out! 🚗 About a 1-hour drive from Basu County. The 72 Bends is one-way traffic; enter from the top and exit at the bottom ⛽ Fill up your gas tank in Basu County, and stock up on drinking water and snacks before heading up the mountain ⏰ Open from April–November each year. Temporary traffic control is very common during rain or snow 🗺️ Route & photo spots Basu ➡️ Yela Mountain Pass Observation Deck (classic check-in spot, perfect for mobile photography) ➡️ First Observation Deck (overlook the entire 72 Bends, wide panoramic view, top choice for drone shots) ➡️ Mid-mountain parking spot (see the bends up close, feel the depth of the canyon) ➡️ Nujiang Bridge (Hero Bridge, capture the canyon and river in one frame) ➡️ Bottom exit 📸 Arrive between 2:00 PM–5:00 PM The sunlight hits the canyon walls directly, maximizing the contrast between light and shadow, making for incredibly vibrant photos ⚠️ The highest altitude of the 72 Bends is 4,650 meters. There is a significant elevation change, with many curves and frequent rockfalls It's windy on the plateau, so watch the wind speed when launching your drone and reserve enough battery for the return flight Drive slowly, do not overtake on curves, and watch out for altitude sickness

For this trip to Tibet, I followed Trip.com's recommendation and chose this 11-day group tour. I had a fantastic time overall. The tour leader was incredibly responsible and drove like a pro, making me feel safe the entire way. 🚗 Friends told me the average price for accommodations during the National Day holiday was only CNY 100–200, but the quality didn't suffer at all; the light luxury hotels were comfortable and clean. Just a couple of tips: if you want a single room, there's an extra fee of CNY 2,000, but if you share a room with a companion, it's only CNY 1,500. Just a small detail for your reference. The itinerary took us from the Potala Palace in Lhasa all the way to Ranwu Lake. The scenery was absolutely stunning, especially at the Rurila Viewing Platform and the Sister Lakes—every photo I took looked like a professional shot. The entire trip was a pure sightseeing tour in a business van, with drone and DSLR photography assistance included. The welcome banquet had a great atmosphere, and the "Handi Bacong" activity was so much fun! Tips: The temperature difference between day and night in Tibet is significant, so remember to bring a thick jacket. Altitude sickness affects everyone differently, so it's best to bring some medication for peace of mind. Overall, it was a fantastic experience with great value—highly recommended for anyone planning a trip to Tibet! 🌄

Don't want to deal with National Day crowds? These 5 off-the-beaten-path cities are tried and tested fun 01 Anqing | Anhui For those planning to crowd into the Bund or West Lake for National Day, I suggest you take a detour to Anqing. A breeze from Tianzhu Mountain is enough to clear your head. ⏰ Head up the mountain before 10:00 AM. The clouds haven't dispersed yet, and the wind blowing down from the valley is ten times more comfortable than an air-conditioned room. 📍 There is a small stall near the lower Tianzhu Mountain cable car station that sells rock ear soup. Drinking a bowl after climbing the mountain is salty, fresh, and warms the stomach. ⚠️ During National Day, the cable car line can reach one hour. It's recommended to arrive at the South Gate before 7:30 AM, walk a section of the trail, and then take the cable car. The time you save will be enough for you to take 20 more photos. The wind on Tianzhu Mountain is truly wild; if you don't hold onto your hat, it will fly away. For seniors, it's recommended to take the cable car both up and down, and don't try to climb the steep steps in the Mysterious Valley. After descending, head to Daobashi Street for a bowl of Jiangmao dumplings—thin skin and clear soup—paired with braised pork with sweet potato starch balls for a happy carb-filled finish. 02 Nyingchi | Tibet In Nyingchi during National Day, autumn colors are just beginning, and there are far fewer people than during the spring peach blossom festival. In the Gangyul Spruce Forest in Bomi, Spanish moss hangs from the branches, and the air is as damp as if it just rained. 🚄 The bullet train from Lhasa to Nyingchi takes about 3 hours. After exiting the station, share a ride to Basum Lake for about 80 per person. 📍 At Cuozong Temple on the Mid-Lake Island of Basum Lake, a 20-minute walk around is enough, and the reflection on the lake is steadier than any filter. If you are taking the Yunnan-Tibet Highway into Nyingchi, the leaves from Ranwu Lake to Bomi are half-yellow by early October. If you are driving, don't rush at night, as yaks may cross the road at any time. The Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon is worth a full day. ⏰ The probability of Namcha Barwa appearing is higher after 3:00 PM, but don't wait too long, as the clouds can change in an instant. ⚠️ Dining options in the canyon are limited, so bring your own food and water. If you want to see autumn colors but are afraid of altitude sickness, Nyingchi has a relatively friendly altitude, making it suitable for seniors to walk slowly. 03 Laibin | Guangxi The name Laibin sounds like a place you'd just pass through, but Jinxiu Lotus Mountain and the Panwang Realm in Dayaoshan are places that will truly make you stop. 📍 The Panwang Realm plank road is built on a cliff; with clouds beneath your feet and mountains opposite, your legs might feel weak, but it's worth it. ⏰ Arrive at the viewing platform at 6:30 AM for the best chance to see the sea of clouds; if you're late, there will only be a vast expanse of white. 🍜 The Yao-style oil tea in Jinxiu County is bitter at first, then fragrant. It's best enjoyed with puffed rice—you'll need three bowls to get your fill. ⚠️ Some sections of the Panwang Realm steps are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes and don't try to challenge them in white sneakers. Lotus Mountain is best visited in the afternoon when the light hits the forest at an angle, making the outlines of the stone peaks particularly clear. The two places are not far apart, and you can hire a car to visit both in one day, which is perfect for those who don't want to rush but want to see some wild scenery. 04 Luoyang | Henan Luoyang during National Day is busy at the Longmen Grottoes, but it's still more relaxed than during the peony season in May. Laojun Mountain and Jiguan Cave are the "back gardens" that locals secretly visit. ⏰ Enter the Longmen Grottoes after 4:00 PM. The Buddha niches in the West Mountain Grottoes are lit up by the sunset, which looks better than in the morning. 📍 On the street in front of Guanlin Temple, the small shop selling Bufan soup opens at 6:00 AM. It's sour and spicy, served with shredded pancakes. There's a high probability of a sea of clouds on Laojun Mountain during National Day, but the cable car line is long. ⚠️ Buy tickets online one day in advance and arrive at the mountain gate at 6:30 AM. Jiguan Cave has a constant temperature of 18 degrees; wear a jacket outside and a short-sleeved shirt inside, which is just right. Wangcheng Park has a chrysanthemum exhibition during National Day, which is easy to walk through with kids. For a 1.5-day trip: spend half a day at Longmen and Guanlin, and one day at either Laojun Mountain or Jiguan Cave—don't try to do too much. 05 Dongguan | Guangdong Dongguan isn't just factories. The sea under the Humen Bridge is a great place to go on a National Day evening—the wind is strong enough to blow your worries away. 📍 The Humen Bridge viewing platform is next to the Weiyuan Fort. The light is soft after 5:00 PM, which is the best time to photograph the bridge. ⚠️ There's no shade by the sea, so bring a hat and sunglasses, or you'll get sunburned. 🍜 After seeing the bridge, go to the Humenzhai business district for roast goose rice noodles. The skin is crispy, the meat is tender, and the soup base has a hint of herbal fragrance—a bowl is very satisfying. This is suitable for a self-driving trip; navigate to the Weiyuan Fort parking lot. Parking spaces are tight during holidays, so go early. Those with children can let them run on the fort lawn, and seniors can walk on the flat paths without any pressure. Don't come just for the bridge; combining it with local food and shopping makes for a perfect half-day trip. 06 Qiqihar | Heilongjiang Head north for National Day. In Qiqihar's Zhalong Wetland, the reed marshes are turning from green to yellow, and the moment the red-crowned cranes take flight, the whole place goes quiet. ⏰ There are crane releases at 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM. Arrive at the crane viewing platform 20 minutes early to get a front-row seat. 📍 There is a battery car from the entrance of the Zhalong Ecotourism Zone to the crane viewing platform for 10 per person; walking takes 40 minutes. ⚠️ The wetland is windy, so bringing a thin down jacket in October is not an exaggeration. Don't wear sandals, as the mud by the boardwalk is soft and wet. 🍜 Back in the city, have Qiqihar barbecue. Mixed meat with onions, grilled over charcoal, and eaten with garlic slices and lettuce—you can eat your fill for about 60 per person. It's great for families, and children will be mesmerized by the cranes taking flight. Half a day at Zhalong plus a barbecue meal is the perfect pace. 07 Ningbo | Zhejiang In Ningbo during National Day, Tianyi Pavilion and Moon Lake are right next to each other. After visiting the library, take a walk around the lake—the sweet osmanthus has just bloomed, and it smells so good you won't want to leave. 📍 Tianyi Pavilion opens at 8:30 AM. If you are in the first group to enter, there will be no one in the gardens, so you won't have to wait to take photos. ⚠️ It is closed on Monday mornings, so don't miss it. The Xikou Tengtou Tourist Area is suitable for seniors; take the small train for a tour without getting tired. Go to Qiantong Ancient Town in the afternoon; ⏰ after 4:00 PM, most tourists have left, and the stone paths reflect the cooking smoke. The Sanbao tofu feast is worth a try. There is a direct bus from Ningbo city to Xikou, which takes about one hour. Qiantong is close to Ninghai Station, a 20-minute taxi ride away. A 3-day and 2-night trip is just right: one day in the city, one day in Xikou, and half a day in Qiantong. 08 Yinchuan | Ningxia In Yinchuan during National Day, the sky is high and the clouds are light. The reeds at Mingcui Lake and the Helan Mountain rock paintings offer a perfect contrast between soft and hard. 📍 Go to the Helan Mountain rock paintings in the afternoon when the sunlight hits at an angle, making the carved lines clearest. ⚠️ The rock painting area is windy, so wear a scarf and hat, and don't chase the sheep. Mingcui Lake National Wetland Park is suitable for the morning; rent a bicycle for a ride, and ⏰ there are many birds before 10:00 AM. The Lingwu Shuidonggou Tourist Area is worth half a day; exploring the hidden soldier tunnels is interesting, but if you are tall, you'll need to duck. Go to the Western Xia Imperial Tombs after 4:00 PM, when the sunset casts long shadows over the mounds, creating a sense of desolation. 🍜 In the evening, return to the city for hand-grabbed mutton paired with eight-treasure tea to cut the grease. This is suitable for a self-driving trip, as the attractions are scattered and public transport is inconvenient. Ticket prices and opening hours are subject to official daily announcements. These five places are just right for a National Day trip. Which one do you want to visit first?

Perfect for families traveling with children who want a relaxed itinerary: Spend 3 days exploring the upper, middle, and lower reaches of Ranwu Lake. Spend more time by the lake on sunny days, and shorten outdoor stays if it rains, resting or dining in Ranwu Town. We recommend staying in Ranwu Town and bringing windproof, warm clothing and common medications for children. The town is at a high altitude, so observe your child's condition upon arrival and avoid packing the first day too full. Day 1 | Ranwu Town and Bangcuo Lake Ranwu Town: Check in, eat, and rest upon arrival. The town is the main hub for sightseeing and accommodation services. If your child has energy, take a short trip to the nearby lakeside. Bangcuo Lake: Enjoy the lakeside meadows, cattle, sheep, Tibetan-style houses, and white pagodas. It's perfect for a leisurely walk and identifying lakeside scenery. If it rains or gets windy, don't stay too long; head back to town to rest. Logistics for the day: The town and Bangcuo Lake are close to each other, so plan for short round trips. Eat in town at a restaurant serving hot meals. Day 2 | Yangcuo Lake and Laigu Village direction Yangcuo Lake: The water is clear and green. When the weather is calm, you can view the reflection of the mountains and water from safe areas along the shore. Focus on viewing from the shore with children; do not let them enter the water or climb on slippery rocks. Laigu Village: If weather and road conditions permit, you can add this as an optional stop to view the village and glaciers from a distance. Do not treat hiking or entering glacier areas as family activities. If the status is unclear, stay around Yangcuo Lake. Logistics for the day: Before leaving Ranwu Town, ask your accommodation or local service points about road and access conditions before deciding whether to visit Laigu Village. If it rains, gets foggy, or the children are tired, cancel the distant plans and return to town to rest. Day 3 | Leng'anjiabu Lake and Ranwu Lake outlet Leng'anjiabu Lake: View the downstream lake surface, the island in the center of the lake, and the layers of distant mountains. Even if the weather turns overcast, you can stop briefly to observe the changing colors of the lake. If it gets cold by the shore, get back in the car to rest. Ranwu Lake outlet: Here you can see the landscape change as the lake water flows into the Parlung Tsangpo River. It's a great short stop before heading back. Let children watch the water and rocks from a safe distance; do not go near the water's edge. Logistics for the day: Plan these 2 stops based on your actual driving route for the day. Leave some buffer time for your return trip. Before departing, check official channels for Baxoi County or Qamdo City (such as tourism or transportation departments) for road, access, and weather information. Prioritize open and safe viewing spots for your lakeside experience.
