Qamdo travel guide and discussion

Sisters, I’m willing to call Ranwu Lake the "masterpiece" of National Highway 318! The lake’s blue is unreal, and the reflection of the snow-capped mountains feels like stepping into a painting. Please keep this firsthand travel guide~ 🌍【Location】 Ranwu Lake is in Baxoi County, Chamdo, Tibet, at an altitude of 3,850 meters. It is the source of the Palongzangbu River, a tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Formed by a landslide, it stretches over 20 kilometers, surrounded on all sides by snow-capped mountains, looking like another world. ✨【Three Must-See Spots】 1️⃣ Upper Ranwu Viewing Platform Be sure to get there before sunrise! Morning mist floats over the lake, and the Lhagu Glacier is perfectly reflected in the water. Using a telephoto lens, every shot looks like a masterpiece. 2️⃣ Middle Ranwu Pasture A place where Tibetan herders graze their cattle and sheep, very healing. In November, the golden grass contrasts beautifully with the deep blue lake, making every casual photo stunning. 3️⃣ Lower Ranwu Secret Spot Navigate to "Kangsha Village," then walk about 20 minutes along a dirt road to find a little-known viewing spot. The whole lake is quiet and all yours. 🚗【Transportation】 Recommended route: Nyingchi → Bomi → Ranwu, about 6 hours by car. It’s best to rent a car or drive yourself. The road conditions on National Highway 318 are good, but prepare snow chains for November. 🏡【Where to Stay】 Stay at a Tibetan-style guesthouse by the lake for the full experience! I stayed at "Ranwu Lakeside Home," with windows facing the snow mountains. You can see the golden sunlight on the peaks as soon as you open your eyes in the morning. Only about 150 RMB per person. 🍵【What to Eat】 Tibetan yak meat hotpot is a must! Paired with butter tea and barley cakes, it warms you up and helps with altitude sickness. The town’s "Ama Kitchen" serves authentic Tibetan food. 📅【3-Day Itinerary】 Day 1: Arrive at Ranwu → Upper Ranwu Viewing Platform → Stay by the lake Day 2: Hike at Middle Ranwu Pasture → Lower Ranwu Secret Spot → Experience a Tibetan family visit Day 3: Lhagu Glacier day trip (adjust based on your energy) 💡【Tips】 Big temperature difference between morning and night in November, don’t forget your down jacket and thermal underwear The plateau is so dry it’s unbelievable, bring lip balm and moisturizer Carry some glucose oral solution for emergencies with altitude sickness Always ask before taking photos, don’t randomly shoot Tibetan people or prayer flags Standing by Ranwu Lake, watching the snow mountains sink into the crystal-clear blue water, I felt completely calm. No crowds, just the purest beauty between heaven and earth. Before the heavy winter snow closes the roads, hurry and experience this visual feast!

Exploring Qamdo | Tea Horse Plaza and the City Museum: Understanding the vibrant life and ancient history of Eastern Tibet Traveling through the Hengduan Mountains where three rivers run parallel, many travelers pass through Qamdo, often rushing toward distant snow-capped mountains and canyons, easily overlooking the charm of this major town in Eastern Tibet. As a pivotal hub on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, Qamdo boasts both magnificent natural scenery and a vibrant, bustling urban life. Upon arriving in the city, Tea Horse Plaza and the City Museum are two must-visit spots to understand the human history of this land—one offers a glimpse into daily life, the other a look into thousands of years of history, completing a perfect urban tour that balances stillness and motion. Located in the heart of the city, Tea Horse Plaza is the center of the city's vitality and carries the cultural memory of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Covering 20,000 square meters, the plaza cleverly blends traditional Tibetan architectural elements with modern urban design. Wood carvings, colorful paintings, and relief patterns can be seen everywhere, while the scattered buildings replicate the style of old tea horse post stations. Shops line both sides, gathering handmade specialties, Tibetan tea drinks, and unique restaurants. Pedestrians come and go, and local residents mingle with travelers from afar. Strolling through the plaza during the day, you can browse the street-side shops, pick up small items with unique Kham characteristics, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the old town. The true highlight of Tea Horse Plaza, however, comes after nightfall. As the lights turn on one by one, the entire block is illuminated in brilliant colors, and the musical fountain rises and falls with the melody. Local men, women, and children spontaneously gather, forming a large circle to dance the Guozhuang dance. There are no barriers or status requirements; travelers are welcome to join in, follow the beat, and immerse themselves in the daily entertainment of the Kham people amidst laughter and joy. The evening breeze carries the scent of city life, and in this moment, the fatigue of the journey fades away, allowing you to truly touch the vivid, warm pulse of Qamdo. A ten-minute walk from Tea Horse Plaza brings you to the Qamdo City Museum. Admission is free, allowing you to embark on a journey through thousands of years of time. The museum houses tens of thousands of artifacts, providing a complete overview of Eastern Tibet, from prehistoric times and the Karuo civilization to the flourishing trade of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Stepping into the exhibition hall, ancient dinosaur fossils catch your eye first, pulling your thoughts back to the ancient earth of hundreds of millions of years ago. Within the hall, relics of the Karuo culture are quietly displayed. The most notable is a replica of the double-bodied pottery jar, with its unique and primitive shape covered in ancient patterns. Dating back four to five thousand years, it bears witness to the wisdom and life of the early ancestors on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is a highly representative artifact of the Karuo culture. Heading to the second floor, the themed exhibition area of the Ancient Tea Horse Road is particularly moving. Rusted stirrups, worn-out saddlebags, and yellowed, ancient account books—each old object quietly tells the story of the caravan days. Light projections simulate the scene of caravans crossing mountains and ridges, and you can almost hear the camel bells echoing in the mountains. It is easy to imagine the thousands of mule and horse teams shuttling through the mountains, with tea, salt, and cloth being exchanged and circulated here, as the prosperous past of Qamdo as a major trade hub slowly unfolds before your eyes. In addition to cultural relics, the museum also fully displays Kham folk culture, including clothing, utensils, and religious objects. Spending two to three hours exploring in detail will give you a clear understanding of the historical origins of the Eastern Tibetan land, adding a rich narrative background to the scenery you will see later in your journey. Many visiting travelers remark that while the experience in Qamdo is excellent, the overall cost of living is relatively high. Most supplies in plateau cities rely on long-distance transportation, making dining and accommodation costs significantly higher than in inland cities. To have a comfortable trip, you can master a few tips. For dining, choose restaurants frequently visited by locals; a bowl of hot Tibetan noodles and a pot of sweet tea are quite cost-effective. For accommodation, prioritize oxygen-equipped lodgings in the city to alleviate altitude sickness. Spending around the plaza varies depending on your budget, so there is no need to blindly purchase high-priced souvenirs. If your itinerary takes you through Qamdo, you don't have to leave all your time for the distant scenery. Set aside half a day: walk through the museum during the day to look back at thousands of years of civilization, stroll through Tea Horse Plaza in the evening, and watch a lively Guozhuang dance at night. On one side is the profound history preserved in artifacts, and on the other is the vibrant reality of daily life. The story of the ancient Tea Horse Road is fully presented in this balance of stillness and motion. Before heading off to the next mountain journey, take the time to truly feel the unique warmth of this Eastern Tibetan city.

Most travelers on the 318 route skip the Sanse Lake in Bianba, Eastern Tibet. There are no crowded tour groups, it feels very authentic, and it is perfect for an in-depth self-driving trip. The black, white, and yellow lakes are arranged in a triangle. The view is ordinary at eye level, so you must fly a drone. Only from high up can you see the stunning scene of the three-colored lake water embedded in the valley with snow-capped mountains in the background. 🚗 Route planning Standard self-drive: Changdu → Bianba County (approx. 260 km, many mountain roads, 5–6 hours of driving). From Bianba County to the Sanse Lake scenic area is about a 40-minute drive. Eastern Tibet loop: Biru County → Bianba Sanse Lake → Xiangela Glacier. This route covers both the lake and the glacier, so we recommend planning for 2 days. ⚠️ There are many curves and some sections have potholes. Try to drive during the day; driving on mountain roads at night is not recommended. 🅿️ Parking The scenic area has a free public parking lot right next to the Sanse Lake visitor service point, with plenty of space. There is also a small temporary parking area at the Black Lake viewing platform. Do not park randomly on dirt roads by the roadside, as it is easy to get stuck. 🏨 Accommodation 1. First choice: Bianba County. It has the most hotel and guesthouse options, complete with dining and supplies, and rooms with heating and oxygen. It is 40 minutes from the scenic area, and most people stay here. 2. There are almost no established hotels near the scenic area, only a few simple homestays with poor conditions. Staying there is not recommended. Note: The altitude is 4,100m. Staying overnight by the lake is not recommended due to the high risk of altitude sickness. It is more comfortable to stay in the county. 💡 Other tips The scenic area has very few facilities, so prepare dry food, water, a thick jacket, and sunscreen in advance. Move slowly and avoid running or jumping to prevent altitude sickness. Be sure to visit the Xiangela Glacier while you are in the area. Please protect the environment and respect local customs. A practical self-driving guide to Bianba Sanse Lake Suggested comments 1. Staying in Bianba County is the safest bet; don't plan on staying at the scenic area 2. There are tons of curves on the mountain roads, so be sure to drive slowly

Suitable for those traveling along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway who want to see the autumn colors of plateau lakes. Ranwu Lake features autumn leaves, snow-capped mountains, and reflections on the water. When the weather turns overcast, you can shift your focus to the layers of lakeside villages and mountain forests. Autumn colors and morning mist depend on the daily weather, so they are not guaranteed. For accommodation, choose Ranwu Town or lakeside villages to easily explore the upper, middle, and lower sections. To reach these areas from G318, renting a car or booking a local chartered vehicle in advance is recommended. Avoid relying on last-minute ride-sharing when public transport connections are uncertain. Bring windproof and warm clothing, and be mindful of the strong plateau sun and temperature differences between day and night when staying by the lake. Day 1 | Middle Section: Bangcuo Lake and Ranwu Town The Bangcuo Lake area has a more rustic, village feel. Start by walking along the shore to see the water, forests, and Tibetan-style houses, then take a leisurely stroll near Ranwu Town, keeping an eye out for the white stupas and prayer halls by the lake. On clear days, wait for the wind to die down to see the reflections. If the clouds are low, focus on the nearby grasslands, cottages, and mountain forest belts instead of waiting for the distant snow-capped peaks. For lunch, find a local restaurant in Ranwu Town to try Tibetan noodles, butter tea, and other common Tibetan dishes. Stay in the town or by the lake, and head to the upper section on the second day. Day 2 | Upper Section: Yangcuo Lake and the Laigu Direction Yangcuo Lake has clear water, and the reflections of the lakeshore and mountains are the highlight here. The time before and after the wind picks up in the morning and evening is best for observing changes in the water. On clear days, choose a spot along the accessible roads to stop. If it rains or gets foggy, focus on the near-shore water and the layers of clouds sweeping across the mountains, and avoid walking to slippery banks just to find a view. Laigu Glacier is located within Ranwu Town, right next to Ranwu Lake, but as of June 2026, official announcements indicate it remains closed to the public. Only consider it for distant viewing if you confirm it has reopened before you depart. Do not approach the ice, and do not enter closed areas without authorization. If there is rain, snow, low clouds, or poor road conditions, stay around Yangcuo Lake and do not make the glacier a mandatory stop. Day 3 | Lower Section: Leng'anjiabu Lake and the Ranwu Lake Outlet The lower section, Leng'anjiabu Lake, is a great place to wrap up your trip by watching the lake water extend outward, then head to the Ranwu Lake outlet to observe the landscape changes where the water flows into the Parlung Tsangpo River. When the sky is clear, you can look back at the snow-capped mountains and the lake. If the weather turns bad, make a short stop to see the near-shore water, river valley, and mist, and avoid rushing to find distant views when visibility is low. Have lunch in Ranwu Town, then continue along your Sichuan-Tibet Highway route. If you need to pick up luggage on your way back, allow enough time to return to your accommodation. These three days are arranged by the middle, upper, and lower sections. If you encounter bad weather, focus your time that day on the near-shore areas and villages in your current section. The weather at Ranwu Lake changes quickly. Please check the latest announcements from the Baxoi County Government and Qamdo Culture and Tourism Bureau regarding the opening status of Laigu Glacier and road information before you depart.

Perfect for families traveling with children who want a relaxed itinerary: Spend 3 days exploring the upper, middle, and lower reaches of Ranwu Lake. Spend more time by the lake on sunny days, and shorten outdoor stays if it rains, resting or dining in Ranwu Town. We recommend staying in Ranwu Town and bringing windproof, warm clothing and common medications for children. The town is at a high altitude, so observe your child's condition upon arrival and avoid packing the first day too full. Day 1 | Ranwu Town and Bangcuo Lake Ranwu Town: Check in, eat, and rest upon arrival. The town is the main hub for sightseeing and accommodation services. If your child has energy, take a short trip to the nearby lakeside. Bangcuo Lake: Enjoy the lakeside meadows, cattle, sheep, Tibetan-style houses, and white pagodas. It's perfect for a leisurely walk and identifying lakeside scenery. If it rains or gets windy, don't stay too long; head back to town to rest. Logistics for the day: The town and Bangcuo Lake are close to each other, so plan for short round trips. Eat in town at a restaurant serving hot meals. Day 2 | Yangcuo Lake and Laigu Village direction Yangcuo Lake: The water is clear and green. When the weather is calm, you can view the reflection of the mountains and water from safe areas along the shore. Focus on viewing from the shore with children; do not let them enter the water or climb on slippery rocks. Laigu Village: If weather and road conditions permit, you can add this as an optional stop to view the village and glaciers from a distance. Do not treat hiking or entering glacier areas as family activities. If the status is unclear, stay around Yangcuo Lake. Logistics for the day: Before leaving Ranwu Town, ask your accommodation or local service points about road and access conditions before deciding whether to visit Laigu Village. If it rains, gets foggy, or the children are tired, cancel the distant plans and return to town to rest. Day 3 | Leng'anjiabu Lake and Ranwu Lake outlet Leng'anjiabu Lake: View the downstream lake surface, the island in the center of the lake, and the layers of distant mountains. Even if the weather turns overcast, you can stop briefly to observe the changing colors of the lake. If it gets cold by the shore, get back in the car to rest. Ranwu Lake outlet: Here you can see the landscape change as the lake water flows into the Parlung Tsangpo River. It's a great short stop before heading back. Let children watch the water and rocks from a safe distance; do not go near the water's edge. Logistics for the day: Plan these 2 stops based on your actual driving route for the day. Leave some buffer time for your return trip. Before departing, check official channels for Baxoi County or Qamdo City (such as tourism or transportation departments) for road, access, and weather information. Prioritize open and safe viewing spots for your lakeside experience.

Driving in Tibet, I rediscovered the city of Chamdo. Since many people online recommended it, I made this the first stop on my trip: Qambaling Monastery, the premier monastery in eastern Tibet. I heard it's the oldest Gelug monastery in the Kham region, with nearly 600 years of history. I had never heard of it before, but my first reaction after parking was, "Wow, this place is huge!" Walking through every corner of Qambaling Monastery: the red earth, red walls, and monks in red robes—all steeped in the red of time. Against the backdrop of blue skies and white clouds, it is exceptionally dazzling.

At the same time, I suddenly felt both light and heavy. It turns out that people can truly live out a visible devotion for something invisible. As the second-largest city in Tibet, Chamdo is not only a must-visit stop on the Ancient Tea Horse Road but also the center of culture in eastern Tibet. However, regarding Qambaling Monastery: 1. The premier monastery of eastern Tibet: It is one of the monasteries with the most resident monks in Tibet and an important center for the Gelug school in eastern Tibet, known for its strict management. 2. Architectural and artistic treasure: The monastery buildings are well-preserved, and the Buddha statues, murals, and thangkas are exceptionally exquisite. 3. Stunning Cham Dance: This is the most worthwhile performance to see at Qambaling Monastery. The movements are grand, the scene is magnificent, and the dancers wear fierce-looking masks to perform the Guching Cham Dance, which is famous throughout Tibet (usually performed during the annual Butter Lamp Festival, i.e., the Tibetan New Year). 4. Convenient location: It is located in the center of Chamdo city, near the Tea Horse Square, and is the best window to experience the faith and culture of eastern Tibet. 💡 Travel tips: · Opening hours: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (It is recommended to go early; you may not be able to enter the main Buddha hall after 4:00 PM) · Admission: No ticket is required to visit the monastery · Best experience: It is recommended to go early in the morning when the sunlight shines on the red walls and golden roofs, making them glow. You might also catch the monks debating scriptures and feel the purest atmosphere of faith Nearby attractions: 1. Chamdo's Tea Horse Square (very lively at night, a great place to experience the local atmosphere and watch Guozhuang dancing) 2. Ranwu Lake (reflections of snow-capped mountains, beautiful scenery) is also well worth a visit But if you have to choose one place that best represents the soul of Chamdo, it has to be Qambaling Monastery.

On the herringbone-shaped hillside north of Ganzi County in the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan, Ganzi Monastery stands majestically, like a silent guardian of a thousand years. It is not only the largest Gelug school monastery of Tibetan Buddhism in Garzê Prefecture, but also a beacon of faith that carries over 360 years of history and embodies the essence of Tibetan culture. The birth of Ganzi Monastery stems from a legend of atonement and faith. In the mid-17th century, after Gushi Khan, leader of the Mongol Khoshut tribe, took control of the local Tibetan government, he felt deeply the burden of his past military campaigns in the Kham region. He commissioned Hor Chökyi Ngawang Phuntsok, a disciple of the Fifth Dalai Lama, to build many monasteries as an act of atonement. In the first year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1662), Ngawang Phuntsok built the first Gelug monastery on a white stone foundation—Ganzi Monastery. The full name of the monastery is "Ganzi Tashi Rabten Ling," which means "pure and beautiful" in Tibetan. From then on, the name "Ganzi" has been forever linked to this land. Looking out from Ganzi Monastery, you are surrounded by continuous snow-capped mountains, which are the most sacred presence on this land. On clear days, you can clearly see Mount Kawalori, with its main peak at an altitude of 5,992 meters, revered by locals as the Mountain of the God of Wealth. There is also Mount Zhuodala at an altitude of 4,798 meters, with its majestic, steep terrain and rugged rocks. Mount Yala and the Shaluli Mountains are also faintly visible, unfolding like a screen on the horizon. Below the mountain, the Xianggen Kalachakra Stupa (Auspicious White Stupa) echoes the snow-capped mountains from afar, together forming the spiritual coordinates of this land. The 13-tiered stupa symbolizes the 13 heavens, with a gilded top, and it is said to house the relics of Sakyamuni Buddha. The Yalong River Valley spreads out among the rolling mountains, where green fields, golden highland barley, and red-roofed Tibetan houses intertwine to form a vibrant plateau landscape. Along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, I have visited many monasteries—Qiangbalin Monastery, Gengqing Monastery, Dajin Monastery, Ganzi Monastery, and some other large and small monasteries whose names I cannot recall. Their locations share striking similarities, all following the "Heavenly Ladder" concept of Tibetan Buddhist monastery site selection. Monasteries are deliberately built on mountainsides, usually at the highest point of the area, to reach the heavens and reflect the solidity and sanctity of the Vajrayana. At the same time, they visually tower over the residential houses below, highlighting the sacred status of religious sites that transcend the secular world. An ideal monastery site usually requires a backdrop of a large mountain, with rivers or hills surrounding it on both sides, and is situated in the center of a lush valley. This not only conforms to Feng Shui but also meets the practical needs of practice and daily life. The location of Ganzi Monastery is a typical example of the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhist site selection, deeply integrating the three considerations of religious prophecy, Feng Shui symbolism, and geographical practicality. From the first shovel of earth on the white stone foundation in 1662 to the solemn monastery reborn from the ashes in 1981, Ganzi Monastery has experienced destruction and reconstruction, yet it has always remained the strongest fortress of faith on this land. It is not only a witness to the rooting and sprouting of the Gelug school's teachings in the Kham region, but also the core of the Tibetan people's spiritual world. In every rotation of the prayer wheel, in the flickering of every butter lamp, and in the echoing of every chant, the pure faith is like the eternal snow on the peaks of the snow-capped mountains, pure and solemn.

Zizhu Temple is no ordinary temple. It hangs on Zizhu Mountain in Dingqing County, Qamdo, Tibet, at an altitude of about 4,800 meters, and is known as the "City in the sky." It is one of the oldest sacred sites of the Yungdrung Bon religion, dating back about 3,000 years. Six peaks surround the temple, and when the clouds roll in, the entire complex looks like it's floating in the clouds. Must-visit attractions and reasons 1. Eye of the heavenly gate | Natural stone arch The most stunning photo spot at Zizhu Temple. The natural rock arch frames the snow-capped mountains and the temple, making for incredibly impactful photos. 2. Cliffside meditation caves | Millennial retreat The rock face is covered with meditation caves where monks have practiced asceticism for years. Here, you can see faith in its purest form. 3. Six sacred peaks | Symbol of the six paramitas "Zizhu" means six peaks, symbolizing generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditative concentration, and wisdom. The mountain's shape and faith are integrated into one. 4. Main assembly hall and Bon murals The core building of the temple. You can experience the unique rituals of the Bon religion and the Zhangzhung culture. The mural style is different from that of Tibetan Buddhist temples. 5. Panoramic viewing platform | Overlooking the city in the sky Perfect for taking panoramic photos of the temple. The sea of clouds, red mountains, and white walls with golden roofs are all in one frame, which is especially stunning at sunset. 6. Prayer flags and white stupas Colorful prayer flags flutter at an altitude of 4,800 meters. Every snapshot captures the authentic atmosphere of Tibet. 7. Sky toilet | Cliffside wonder Located near the meditation caves, it has become a popular social media photo spot because it's built on the edge of a cliff. It's a very unique experience. Practical tips Admission is free. The final stretch of the road up the mountain is mostly gravel and winding, so an off-road vehicle or chartered car is recommended. The altitude is high, so be sure to prevent altitude sickness and move slowly. In the Bon religion, circumambulation is done counter-clockwise, which is different from the clockwise direction in Tibetan Buddhism. Do not take photos at will inside the temple or in the sky burial area.

Seriously, everyone! Take my advice! Don't come to Ranwu Lake between October and November unless you're prepared. Because once you arrive, your heart will be completely captured by this heavenly hidden gem! I just got back, and I'm still reeling from it! I stayed up late to put together this practical guide. If you're planning to go, just follow these tips and you won't waste any time! 👇 📍 Where is it exactly? Ranwu Lake is nestled in Baxoi County, Qamdo City, Tibet, right next to National Highway 318. Its Tibetan name roughly translates to "corpses piled up," which actually refers to the fact that it's a barrier lake formed by landslides blocking the river. The lake is divided into upper, middle, and lower sections, each offering completely different surprises! 🍂 How stunning is the scenery in October–November? This is the time of year when Ranwu Lake's colors are at their richest and most vibrant! With the rainy season over, the lake water returns to a bottomless Tiffany blue. The forests along the shore are painted golden and fiery red by the autumn frost. The combination of colorful forests, blue lake, and snow-capped mountains creates an incredible sense of depth. Plus, the weather is extremely stable during this time. Every morning from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM, the lake is calm, and that massive "mirror of the sky" perfectly reflects the snow-capped mountains—it's so beautiful it might make you cry. 🍜 Local food recommendations (no duds) When you're on the plateau, you owe it to yourself to have a hot meal! Ranmuqi Tibetan Restaurant: A very unique Tibetan restaurant in Ranwu Town with a warm and hospitable owner. You must order the fritillaria stewed chicken. Baxoi is famous for its fritillaria, and the soup slow-cooked with this medicinal herb and Tibetan chicken blends the herbal aroma and meaty flavor perfectly. One bowl will warm you from head to toe. Yak beef hot pot: Definitely the ultimate remedy for warding off the cold and altitude sickness! The meat is firm yet tender, and the broth is super savory. Stone pot chicken: Stewed in a stone pot carved from local stone, the savory flavors are fully brought out. Every bite is pure essence. Tibetan snacks: You must try tsampa, butter tea, and Tibetan noodles. The butter tea is salty and very helpful for alleviating altitude sickness. Tsampa gets more fragrant the more you chew it, and it's very filling. Tip: The town is dominated by Sichuan restaurants, which offer plenty of choices and consistent flavors. If you're not used to Tibetan food, you can't go wrong with any busy Sichuan restaurant. 🏠 Accommodation guide Accommodation is mainly divided into two areas. Choose based on your needs: · If you want to photograph morning mist and starry skies → Choose Laigu Village first. The Songtsam Laigu Lodge here has the best facilities, including floor heating and diffused oxygen supply. You can see the glacier right from your window. Remember to book 14 days in advance during peak season. There are also many Tibetan-style guesthouses in the village, with prices ranging from CNY 150–300. Before booking, be sure to confirm if they have a private bathroom and electric blanket. · If you're traveling with family or want convenience → Choose Ranwu Town first. There are plenty of dining options, it's easy to refuel, and the altitude is slightly lower. Lake-view hotels and self-driving campsites cost about CNY 400–800, while budget Tibetan-style guesthouses in town are CNY 150–300. If you're bringing parents or children, prioritize Ranwu Town for easier access to medical care and supplies. 🚗 Route planning There is no direct public transportation to Ranwu Lake, so driving yourself or hiring a car is the most flexible way to get there. · From Lhasa: Lhasa → Nyingchi → Bomi → Ranwu. You can stop by Midui Glacier along the way. · From Chengdu: Chengdu → Kangding → Litang → Batang → Ranwu. It takes about 3 to 4 days of driving, and the whole journey is like a blockbuster movie. · Lake loop: View the lower part of Ranwu Lake from G318, then turn onto the G559 county road to reach the upper part of Ranwu Lake. There are several viewing platforms along the national highway where you can temporarily park to take photos. 📸 Photo spot collection These spots are perfect for great photos: Upper Ranwu Lake (Kangsha Village/Xiudeng Temple Viewing Platform): From 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM, when there's no wind, the lake surface is like a giant mirror. It's the top spot for photographing the reflection of the snow-capped mountains. Middle Ranwu Lake Viewing Platform: You can capture the wooden houses of Wa Village and the "golden mountain" at sunset in the same frame. The atmosphere is incredible. Lower Ranwu Lake + RV Campsite: Perfect for road trip photos. Drive about 3 kilometers toward Zayu along the lakeside curve. It's less crowded and perfect for taking photos in peace. Hidden gem spot: Search for "Ranwu Town 82 Road Maintenance Station" on your navigation. Not many people know about it, so you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the entire lake view to yourself. Outfit advice: Light colors or bright colors like red go best with the blue lake and snow-capped mountains. Layering with a windbreaker is the most practical approach. The temperature difference between day and night is huge, so a down jacket is essential for survival. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls (every sentence is a hard-learned lesson) Altitude sickness is the top priority: The altitude is nearly 3,900 meters. Don't run or jump when you first arrive, and try not to shower or drink alcohol on the first day. Prepare oxygen canisters and glucose in advance, and start taking Rhodiola rosea a week before. Stay warm: In October, daytime temperatures are about 5–15°C, and it can drop below freezing at night. A windbreaker and a light down jacket are must-haves. Sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen (SPF 50+) are also essential—the UV rays on the plateau are no joke. Get there early for reflections: The wind starts picking up on the lake after 10:00 AM. If you want to capture the mirror effect, wake up early. 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM is the best time. Agree on the price for horse riding in advance: If you encounter horse riding experiences by the lake, make sure to clarify the total price before getting on the horse, otherwise, last-minute price hikes will ruin your mood. Don't stop at private roadside viewing platforms: Some places fenced off by individuals on the national highway will charge a parking fee. There's no need to spend that money; official viewing platforms are free to park at. Be environmentally friendly: Do not trample on the meadows and marshes by the lake, and take all your trash with you. Such a beautiful place needs us all to protect it. Autumn at Ranwu Lake is truly the kind of place you can't forget once you've seen it. The heart-piercingly blue lake water, golden meadows, towering snow-capped mountains, and a bowl of hot yak beef hot pot—everything is just right. Take advantage of this golden window from October to November and add it to your itinerary now!

❇️Visiting Yushu It was supposed to be an escape route. The original plan was to fly to Changdu, drive along National Highway 317 to see the "City in the Sky"—Zizhu Temple, then head to the "ideal on earth"—Sapu Mountain, and finally check in at the highest KFC🍟—the Naqu branch—on the way back. ❌But everything was defeated by altitude sickness. I was vomiting and had diarrhea on the first day, and my lungs felt like they were exploding on the second night. So, the need for a flight made me choose the best city—Yushu. ❗️Although it's not my first time here, this visit was unexpectedly different. ✅The Journey A 7.5-hour drive🚗 from Changdu to Yushu. The scenery along the 317 and 505 national highways is worth recommending. Occasional monkey troops and yaks everywhere, traveling together for a short stretch. The white stupas and temples in small villages are all about faith. And the winding mountain roads that go up and down. A test of altitude between 3,500–4,200 meters. 🌟❗️There is road construction🚧 on the way now. Note that when you cross the provincial border, take the left fork👈 and head up; it will be much easier to drive (🔅there's a supermarket on that side). ✳️Yushu At 8:00 AM, it's 1°C. The mountains are covered in snow❄️, a layer of white velvet. Went to Changu Temple in the morning. The fork in the road ahead leads to the Sky Burial site. However, it's not every day, and not necessarily in the morning; it depends on the timing. There's a schedule for it, but it was just right to visit the Wencheng Princess Temple instead. On the way back, I stopped at Gesar Square. Unfortunately, the Cultural Center and the Earthquake Memorial Hall below were both under renovation🰰 and couldn't be visited. But the surrounding area is a hub for dining; the ten-year-old clay pot restaurant and the independent coffee shop☕️ are both good. ✈️Return Trip Flights start from 1:00 PM, with several outbound flights. Direct flights to Xining, and connecting flights to Shanghai and Beijing. Not many choices, but enough. 🏨Hotel 🔸Vienna Hotel (Gesar Square Branch) Breakfast is OK. It's a lively market area at night, and the temperature is comfortable. However, the decor is old and shows its age. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A different mood, a different perspective on Yushu

✨The highland sapphire on National Highway 318 | In-depth self-drive guide to Ranwu Lake It's rare to use the word breathtaking to describe a landscape, until I saw Ranwu Lake with my own eyes. Mist covers the lake surface, and the water is like a mirror, clearly reflecting the Laigu Glacier. 📸Photo tip: Bring a telephoto lens to easily capture stunning shots of the snow-capped mountain reflections. ✅Middle Ranwu Lake Pasture A native Tibetan pasture where cattle and sheep graze leisurely by the lake. In November, the grass turns a warm golden color. The golden meadows paired with the azure lake water create rich color layers and an excellent atmosphere. ✅Lower Ranwu Lake Hidden Gem Navigate to 👉 Kangsha Village, then drive along the dirt road for 20 minutes to arrive. A niche, off-the-beaten-path spot with very few tourists. You can enjoy the entire lake view to yourself and quietly watch the snow-capped mountains and the lake. 🚗[Transportation Guide] Recommended route: Nyingchi → Bomi → Ranwu, about a 6-hour drive ✅Travel method: Self-drive/chartered car is the best choice; road conditions on this section of the 318 are stable ⚠️Important reminder: Temperatures are low in November, and roads are prone to icing. Be sure to prepare snow chains and drive carefully! 🏠[Accommodation Recommendation] Prioritize Tibetan-style homestays by the lake Open the window to face the snow-capped mountains directly; you can wait for the golden mountain sunrise while lying in bed in the morning. We recommend Ranwu Lake Side Homestay, around 150 per person, great value for money. 🍲[Tibetan Food Must-Try] You must try the Tibetan yak hot pot when you come here! Pair it with butter tea and highland barley pancakes to warm your stomach and relieve altitude discomfort. For local Tibetan food, look for "Ama Kitchen" in town for authentic flavors. 🗓[3-Day Itinerary Reference] D1 Arrive in Ranwu → Upper Ranwu Lake Observation Deck → Check into a lakeside homestay D2 Hike at Middle Ranwu Lake Pasture → Lower Ranwu Lake Hidden Gem → Visit a Tibetan family D3 Day trip to Laigu Glacier (optional) 💡[Must-Read Tips for High-Altitude Travel] ▪The temperature difference between day and night is huge in November; down jackets and thermal underwear are essential ▪The plateau is extremely dry; don't forget moisturizer, lip balm, and sunscreen ▪Prepare oral glucose solution in advance to relieve and prevent altitude sickness ▪Respect local Tibetan customs; do not photograph Tibetan people or prayer flags without permission Standing by Ranwu Lake, the snow-capped mountains are quietly reflected in the azure blue water, and everything around slows down. There is no noise from popular tourist spots, only the pure scenery gifted by nature. Before the heavy snow closes the mountains, come to eastern Tibet to encounter this visual feast!

🔥Spent 3 days in Qamdo | The ultimate October–November guide to Eastern Tibet✨ Before leaving, I was debating whether Qamdo was worth a special trip🌄. After actually going, I was completely captivated by the wilderness of Eastern Tibet. I've organized a super practical itinerary; beginners can just copy it✅. 🗺️ | Route planning (3 days, no backtracking) Day 1: Qamdo City Center → Qiangbalin Monastery → Lancang River Square Stroll slowly through the city to acclimate to the altitude. Don't rush right away; the light and shadows at the monastery in the evening are absolutely stunning. Day 2: Karuo Ruins → Nujiang 72 Bends → Bangda Grassland Head along the mountain roads. The layered mountains take on warm tones with the autumn season, and the winding mountain roads are incredibly atmospheric. Day 3: Niche valleys around Zizhu Monastery → Return trip Get away from the crowds and explore the hidden gems tucked away in the high mountains. The autumn scenery in the valleys during October–November is incredibly atmospheric. 🍜 | Local food guide (no pitfalls) ✔️Tibetan-style beef noodles: Rich broth, a hot bowl dispels the plateau chill. ✔️Hand-grabbed yak meat: Firm texture, dip it in chili for an addictive flavor. ✔️Sweet butter tea: If it's your first time, choose the sweet version to slowly experience the Tibetan flavor. ✔️Highland barley cake: Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect as a snack for the road. 💡Try to choose restaurants with many locals; the taste is authentic and the price-to-value ratio is high. 🏨 | Accommodation guide ▪️City center: Prioritize the area around Qamdo Wanda Plaza. It's convenient for dining and buying supplies, has complete amenities, and offers better comfort for resting at night, which is suitable for those who have just arrived and are acclimating to altitude sickness. ▪️Near Bangda Town: You can stay here if you are passing through the 72 Bends. There aren't many hotels, and October–November is a minor peak season, so booking in advance is recommended. ⚠️People who are highly sensitive to altitude should try not to stay in towns with too high an altitude; poor rest can easily lead to headaches. 📸 | Must-visit photo spots ✨Qiangbalin Monastery: Red walls and golden roofs. With monks walking around in the early morning, you can easily take atmospheric, blockbuster-style photos. ✨Nujiang 72 Bends Observation Deck: Overlook the winding road; it's magnificent and stunning. ✨Bangda Grassland: The withered yellow autumn grassland paired with distant mountains makes for great wide-angle shots full of narrative. ✨Cliffs below Zizhu Monastery: Rugged mountains paired with Tibetan architecture; long-distance shots are amazing. ❌ | Tips to avoid pitfalls (heartfelt advice) 1. The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains in October–November is extreme! Thick down jackets, hats, and gloves are a must. It's sunny during the day, but the night wind is bone-chilling. 2. Don't buy handmade jewelry from strangers at high prices; consume rationally. 3. There are tons of winding mountain roads! If you get carsick easily, prepare medicine in advance. Be cautious if driving on mountain roads at night. 4. Respect local customs. Don't touch items in temples at will, and check if photography is allowed before taking pictures. 5. Prepare oxygen bottles. Don't run or jump vigorously; move slowly to adapt to the high altitude. 💌 A few final thoughts Eastern Tibet doesn't have the hustle and bustle of over-commercialization. Vast mountains and fields, ancient monasteries, simple and authentic life. October–November has fewer people and is quiet, making it the perfect time to visit Qamdo. Friends planning to come, save this post to start your plateau journey🌿

Day 42, Dingqing County → Riwoqe County → Qamdo City, staying in downtown Qamdo. 💖 Today's destination is downtown Qamdo, but what I'm really looking forward to is the "City in the Sky" perched on a 4,800-meter peak—Zhizhu Monastery. ✅ The red mountains of eastern Tibet as our constant companion. 🎈 Continuing along National Highway 317 from Dingqing County, it wasn't long before the red mountains appeared—one, two, three... stretching for dozens of miles. It looked as if the earth had been torn open, revealing burning colors of ochre, dark red, and purple. Sometimes they were right in front of us, sometimes far on the horizon, sometimes appearing and disappearing, and sometimes fully exposed. They accompanied us the whole way; this section of G317 is a scenic attraction in itself. ✅ City in the Sky—Zhizhu Monastery. 🎈 The visitor center for Zhizhu Mountain is right next to G317. About 2 kilometers past the visitor center, you turn into the intersection for Zhizhu Monastery, and the winding mountain road begins to climb. 🎈 This road used to be dirt, requiring you to navigate 43 nearly 180-degree turns with a rushing river below. It's now fully paved with asphalt, and the drive takes about 40 minutes, but it's still steep with many curves. I didn't feel much while driving, but my friends in the passenger seats on the mountain side held onto the grab handles tightly, not daring to look down. I advise those with a fear of heights to be cautious. 🎈 Reaching the summit, Zhizhu Monastery appeared before us. The complex of red walls and golden roofs is built into the mountainside, looking as if it grew right out of the cliff. At an altitude of 4,800 meters, when clouds and mist surge up from the valley, the entire monastery looks like a palace in the sky, hence the name "City in the Sky." 🎈 Zhizhu Monastery is one of the highest-altitude and oldest Bon monasteries in Tibet, having weathered over 3,000 years of history. There is a popular photo spot at the summit called the "Sky Toilet." I walked over to take a look; the floor is suspended, with a direct view down into the red valley. I didn't dare step onto it, so I just checked in, took a photo, and left. ✅ The "Little Switzerland" of Tibet—Riwoqe. 🎈 After coming down from Zhizhu Monastery, we continued along G317 toward Riwoqe. "Riwoqe" means "big mountain" in Tibetan. It is known as the "Colorful Riwoqe: City of Flowers of the Three Rivers," "Little Switzerland of Tibet," and "Back Garden of Qamdo." G317 and G214 meet here, making it a transportation hub in eastern Tibet. 🎈 After passing through Riwoqe County, grasslands and wetlands gradually became more frequent. The mountains along both sides of the road slowly spread out, and the colors shifted from the intense red of the mountains to a soft green, as if we had entered a different world. 💖 PS: It's about 100 kilometers from Riwoqe to Qamdo, with many winding mountain roads. By the time we arrived in Qamdo, it was already evening. Qamdo is a mountain city, with houses layered along the slopes on both sides of the river valley. As the lights began to twinkle at dusk, I leaned against the railing at Qiangbalin Monastery and looked out; Qamdo under the lights was stunning!

Located in Ranwu Town, Basu County, Qamdo, Tibet, Ranwu Lake is a must-visit barrier lake on the G318 National Highway. Public transport is not recommended. 🗺Recommended Routes ✅Half-day stopover (for road trips) Lower Ranwu Lake (next to G318) → Middle Ranwu Lake Wacun Village Viewing Platform. Stop by the 3,888 km milestone on the way, then continue your journey. ✅One-day in-depth photography route (stay in Ranwu Town) Day 1: Arrive in Ranwu Town. Explore Lower Ranwu Lake in the afternoon and watch the sunset at Middle Ranwu Lake in the evening. Day 2: Wake up early to visit Upper Ranwu Lake to photograph the mirror-like reflection of the snow-capped mountains. If time permits, visit Laigu Glacier on the way back. ✨Must-Visit Spots 💧Upper Ranwu Lake The clearest water and best snow-capped mountain reflections. Navigate to Kangsha Village or Xiudeng Temple Viewing Platform. On windless mornings, the lake surface is like a mirror—the absolute highlight of Ranwu Lake. 🏡Middle Ranwu Lake Wacun Tibetan Village is right by the lake. Highland barley fields and Tibetan-style houses combined with the lake and snow-capped mountains offer a blend of culture and nature. Watch the "golden mountain" sunset from the viewing platform in the evening—it's breathtaking. 🛣️Lower Ranwu Lake Right next to the G318. Most convenient access. The road, lake, and snow-capped mountains are all in one frame, perfect for road trip photos. Easy to visit while passing through. ❄️Laigu Glacier The source of Ranwu Lake. A maritime glacier where you can see blue ice up close. About a 1-hour drive from Ranwu Town. Requires a separate ticket. 🍜Food Recommendations Dining options in Ranwu Town are limited, mainly Tibetan and Sichuan cuisine. 🥘Stone pot chicken: Warms the body and stomach. A must-eat on the plateau, perfect for relieving travel fatigue. 🥩Tibetan pork, yak meat hot pot: Local specialties with firm, flavorful meat. 🍵Butter tea, tsampa: Experience authentic Tibetan flavors. You can also choose Sichuan restaurants, which suit most travelers' tastes. 🏨Accommodation Recommendations 🏡Ranwu Town (recommended) The town has the most guesthouse and hotel options. Prioritize rooms with oxygen supply and floor heating; the high altitude makes oxygen very comfortable. Prices range from CNY 150–800. Convenient for dining and shopping. ⚠️Not recommended to stay in simple lakeside prefab houses; insulation is poor. 💡Travel Tips · Elevation is 3,850m. Avoid running, jumping, or strenuous exercise. Do not shower or drink alcohol upon arrival. Prepare oxygen canisters, drink plenty of warm water, and prevent altitude sickness. · Huge temperature difference between day and night on the plateau. Even in summer, bring a thick jacket or windbreaker. UV rays are strong; sunscreen and sunglasses are essential. · Some lakeside areas are marshy wetlands. Do not step on the shallow lakeside areas to avoid getting stuck. · Do not park on the road. Use official viewing platform parking lots. · Respect local customs. Do not take photos of locals without permission; ask first. · Mobile signal is weak in some lake areas. Download offline maps in advance.

📍Location Zhizhu Temple sits on Mount Zhizhu in Dingqing County, Chamdo, Tibet, not far from National Highway 317. It takes about 1 hour from Dingqing county town. Many spots along Highway 317 look scary, but this stretch of the main road has good asphalt paving and is easier to drive than expected. 💰Average cost: No admission fee ⛰High altitude, but not a deterrent The mountain is truly high. Zhizhu Temple sits at about 4,800m. The road from the base winds up with S-curves and steep slopes, looking very precarious. But the actual road conditions aren't that scary: the main Highway 317 is stable asphalt, and the winding road to the temple, though narrow and full of curves, is passable for sedans if you take your time and drive slowly. When the clouds press down over the high peaks and deep valleys, it really feels like driving into a celestial Buddhist realm. 🦅Sky burial site You'll pass a sky burial site on the way up. This isn't a tourist show—it's a real sacred Tibetan funeral site. We took a distant look and quietly stepped back—no photos, no comments, no approaching the ritual area. Vultures circled overhead, the wind felt cold, and the awe for life and faith ran deeper than any photo op. Remember this: Respect > Curiosity > Getting the shot. 🧘Monks are surprisingly friendly I expected such a secluded Bon monastery to be unapproachable, but the monks we met were all peaceful and kind. They'd point the way when asked, smile when we chatted, and on the prayer path a master proactively reminded us that Bon prayer walks go counterclockwise. No sales pitches, no impatience—just the clean warmth of mountain people. 📸Photo spots (matching my photos) · Before entering the temple, look back from the mountainside: cliffside monk quarters + panoramic view of the six peaks · Observation deck opposite the main prayer hall: sunrise/sunset light on the red and white walls is stunning · Meditation caves and Heavenly Gate Cave: wide-angle + small human figure for maximum atmosphere · Toward the sky burial site: only shoot the mountain terrain and the sky with circling vultures—don't photograph people 📝Tips: · Altitude 4,800m—don't jump, run, or shoot right away; take 20 minutes to acclimate · Bon monastery: prayer walks and mountain circumambulation go counterclockwise · Possible road closure in winter; June–October is most reliable, September–October has stunning autumn colors · Drones are allowed, but ask the monks before flying over the monastery—don't force it · Stay a night in Dingqing county town before heading up; it's much friendlier than rushing straight into altitude sickness 👍Top recommendation: The romance of Highway 317 isn't in the service areas—it's in the 13 km turnoff to Mount Zhizhu. The mountain is terrifyingly high, the road isn't as bad as expected, and the monks are warmer than the scenery.

Just got back from Qamdo in early August. Traveled with 2 people, total cost 680 yuan per person (excluding major transportation). Ranwu Lake is free, but visiting in August is really not like the sapphire blue in online photos. It's the rainy season, so the lake water is murky and yellowish. Altitude sickness is real, and the Yalong section of Laigu Glacier is still closed. This post is full of honest, firsthand experience, suitable for those who can accept "imperfect scenery." 1. Let's start with the hard truths: What is Ranwu Lake really like in August? July and August are the rainy season at Ranwu Lake. Rain and glacial meltwater wash a lot of sediment into the lake, making the water murky and yellowish. Those bright blue photos online were basically all taken in April–May or October–November. I went in early August and caught a sunny day, but the water was still murky—it's not a filter issue. Ranwu Lake is divided into upper, middle, and lower sections: Upper Ranwu is the quietest but requires some walking; Middle Ranwu has the widest lake surface; Lower Ranwu is right by National Highway 318, making it the most convenient for parking. My advice is not to have too high expectations. Treat it as a "stop and take a look" spot on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, and you won't be disappointed. 2. Free, but don't fall for traps: A recommended itinerary Ranwu Lake Middle Ranwu Viewing Platform (Ranwu Town, Baxoi County, Qamdo City, Tibet; next to National Highway 318; navigate to "Ranwu Gas Station" and continue for about 1 km) 9:00 AM–12:00 PM Transportation: Drive or carpool to Ranwu Town. The viewing platform is right by the national highway; parking fee is 10 yuan. There is no bus station in Ranwu Town. Buses can only be taken from Bomi Bus Station, with one departure each at 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM daily, costing 30 yuan/person. Sightseeing: Middle Ranwu has the widest lake surface. Walking along the boardwalk takes about 30 minutes. To get great photos, you need to wait for the windless early morning when the lake has reflections. Tour groups start arriving after 9:00 AM; if you want peace and quiet, arrive before 8:30 AM. Tips: The wetlands by the lake are soft; do not step on them, as you can easily sink in. The altitude is 3,850 meters; don't run or jump when you arrive. Xiudeng Temple Viewing Platform (Kangsha Village, Ranwu Town; navigate to "Kangsha Village" and drive along the mountain road to the temple) 2:00 PM–5:00 PM Transportation: About a 15-minute drive from Ranwu Town. The mountain road is narrow, so be careful when passing other vehicles. Sightseeing: This is the best spot to overlook Upper Ranwu Lake. There are very few tourists, and the view is much better than the viewing platform below. The temple is very quiet, suitable for sitting for a while to ease altitude sickness. Tips: The mountain road has no guardrails; drive slowly. Do not speak loudly around the temple and respect local customs. Lower Ranwu Lake Outlet (at the Ranwu Lake National Forest Park stone tablet on National Highway 318) 6:00 PM–7:30 PM Sightseeing: Lower Ranwu is closest to the town. The evening light is soft, making it suitable for a walk. There is an open river beach at the outlet with loud rushing water; standing there for a while will wake you up. Tips: It is not recommended to stay by the lake after dark. There are no streetlights, and the road back to town relies on car headlights. 3. What's actually worth eating in town 1. Ranwu Lake fish (clear stew) Full address: "Ranmuqi Tibetan Restaurant" next to National Highway 318, Ranwu Town, Baxoi County Average cost: 60–80 yuan Must-order signature dishes: Clear stewed Ranwu Lake fish, fritillaria stewed chicken Honest review: The fish meat is firm and tender. Clear stewing best brings out the sweetness of the glacial lake water. The fritillaria stewed chicken has a rich medicinal aroma, and you feel warm after drinking it. The owner is a local Tibetan uncle with a sincere attitude; he will remind you to eat slowly and not rush. 2. Yak meat hot pot Full address: Available in basically all Sichuan and Tibetan restaurants in Ranwu Town Average cost: 50–70 yuan Honest review: The yak meat is a bit tough, but the more you chew, the more fragrant it becomes. The soup base warms the body and really helps with altitude sickness. There aren't many restaurants in town; just walk to the end of the street and go into whichever one is crowded. 4. The truth about accommodation and transportation Accommodation: Accommodation conditions in Ranwu Town are generally average; book in advance during peak season. Hotels with oxygen supply equipment make a big difference in how you feel, such as the Pincuo Kangsang Baxoi Ranwu Lake Oxygen-Rich Hotel (No. 46, Second Ring Road, Ranwu Town), which has oxygen generators in every room. Being able to sleep soundly at an altitude of 3,850 meters is more important than anything else. Ordinary guesthouses are cheaper but can easily lead to headaches at night. Transportation: It is about 230 km from Qamdo to Baxoi, and about 90 km from Baxoi to Ranwu. Transferring to a rural bus in Baxoi takes about 2 hours, but the schedule is sparse, so it's a matter of luck. The safest way is to take a bus from Bomi or drive along the 318. There is no official bus station in Ranwu Town; do not trust private vehicles soliciting passengers on the side of the road. 5. Pitfall avoidance checklist 1. The Yalong section of Laigu Glacier has been closed since June 2, 2026; don't make a wasted trip. Be sure to confirm the latest status before you go. 2. Some tourists previously reported that the restrooms at the Ranwu Lake International Self-Driving Camp required a detour of 300–400 meters. The fence was opened in August, but please confirm before you go. 3. Altitude sickness is real, not just to scare you. Carry oxygen bottles and glucose with you, and don't wash your hair or take a shower on the first day. 4. The lake water is yellowish in August; don't be fooled by online photos. If you want to see the blue lake, wait until October–November. 5. There are few ATMs in town; prepare enough cash. Overall, Ranwu Lake is not a place to "make a special trip" for; it is a stop along the 318. Accept its true appearance in August, see what you should see, take it easy when you need to, and it will be just fine.

Driving the 214 from Yunnan into Tibet, you reach Quzika after crossing Hongla Mountain. I originally planned to push straight through to Markam County, but a friend convinced me to stop here for the night—it turned out to be the most comfortable night of the entire Yunnan-Tibet route. Yunqu Manor Hotel🍷 📍Location: Quzika Township, Markam County, Qamdo, Tibet. Located off National Highway 214. 🏔️Altitude: 2,200 meters!! With a dry, hot valley climate, you won't have to worry about altitude sickness on your first night in Tibet. 🔥Why do I highly recommend it? 1. Altitude-friendly, zero pressure for your first night in Tibet😌 An altitude of 2,200 meters is basically "plain-level" treatment in the Tibetan region. Just coming up from Yunnan, your body is still adjusting. Staying here is much more comfortable than going straight to Markam County at 3,800 meters. You need a good night's sleep to have the energy to cross the mountains later. 2. Natural hot springs to melt away fatigue♨️ The hotel features Quzika's natural hot springs, with dozens of indoor and outdoor pools spread along the valley. After a day of driving on winding mountain roads, soaking your sore legs in the hot springs at night wipes away all your fatigue—it works better than any massage. 3. Unique highland red wine🍷 Affiliated with the Quzika 1865 Winery, you can taste organic highland wine right in the lobby. After soaking in the hot springs, take a glass of red wine back to your room and enjoy a light buzz in the Tibetan valley. You really won't find this experience anywhere else. 4. Lancang River Canyon views from your window🌊 Backed by Dameiyong Snow Mountain and facing the great bend of the Lancang River. Wake up to the birds in the canyon in the morning, and when you open the window, the clouds and mist are slowly rising from the river—it's worth the price of the room alone. 📌Practical tips · Self-driving: About 2.5 hours from Feilai Temple, with good road conditions. · Suitable for: A first stop for rest on the Yunnan-Tibet route, self-driving enthusiasts, and those worried about altitude sickness. · Must-do experiences: Night soak in the hot springs + wine tasting at the winery + canyon morning mist. · Dining: The hotel has a restaurant that serves both Tibetan and Sichuan cuisine, so you don't need to worry about meals. For friends traveling the Yunnan-Tibet route, don't push yourself to reach Markam County on the first night. Stop in Quzika and soak in the hot springs—this is the right way to start a comfortable trip to Tibet🌙

In early August 2026, I traveled to Tibet with my family via the Yunnan-Tibet Highway. There were 4 of us, and the total cost was about CNY 320 per person. We focused on the niche, authentic experience of Markam Yanjing, avoiding rushed itineraries and tourist traps, and immersing ourselves in the primitive charm of the 1,300-year-old ancient salt fields along the Lancang River. This entire guide is based on my personal experience, packed with practical tips, and perfect for beginners to follow directly. Detailed itinerary [Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields, Jiada Village, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet] 9:00 AM–12:00 PM Transportation: If driving, take the G214 National Highway north from Deqin, Yunnan, for about 2–3 hours. Set your navigation to "Markam Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields." If not driving, you can take a van from Markam County to Yanjing Township for about CNY 30–40 per person; the trip takes 2 hours. Admission ticket: CNY 90/person. It may be free during the off-season; please check the official attraction channels for the latest information on the day of your visit. Purchase tickets through official channels. Activities: August is when the Lancang River has the most water, creating a powerful, muddy yellow torrent that contrasts sharply with the red and white salt fields on both banks. The morning light from the east is perfect for photographing the panoramic view of the salt fields on the west bank. You can watch up close as salt workers extract brine from the wells, channel it into the fields, and dry it naturally—this is the only living heritage site in the world that preserves the original manual salt-making technique. The east bank produces red salt, and the west bank produces white salt; it is worth observing the difference in color across the same river. Tips: August is the rainy season, and thunderstorms are common in the mountains in the afternoon, so it is recommended to arrive as early as possible in the morning. Plan for 2–3 hours. The salt field area has slippery, rocky ground, so be sure to wear non-slip, flat shoes. The altitude of Yanjing is about 2,300–2,500 meters; you generally won't experience significant altitude sickness, but you should still avoid strenuous running or jumping. [Yanjing Catholic Church, Shangyanjing Village, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet] 2:00 PM–3:30 PM Transportation: It is about a 10-minute drive from Jiada Village. The church is located right next to the G214 National Highway; set your navigation to "Yanjing Catholic Church" to go directly there. Activities: This is the only Catholic church in Tibet, founded by French missionaries in 1865, with a history of over 160 years. The church architecture blends Tibetan and Western styles, and the interior is quiet and solemn. Residents of Shangyanjing Village are mostly Catholic, while those in Xiayanjing Village are mostly Tibetan Buddhist. The cultural phenomenon of two faiths coexisting across a single gully is very unique. A 40-minute visit is sufficient. Tips: Please keep quiet inside the church and respect local religious customs. In August, the afternoon light is from the west, making it slightly backlit for photos of the church facade. It is recommended to visit here in the morning on your way, and return to the salt fields in the afternoon for more photos. [Lancang River Salt Field Trail, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet] 5:30 PM–7:00 PM Highlights: In the evening, the light turns into a soft golden hue, making it the best time to photograph the "palette" effect of the salt fields. Stroll slowly along the dirt road by the Lancang River, with ocher-red sandy soil underfoot and layers of wooden salt racks in the distance, while the river breeze carries a faint salty scent. It is not too sunny in the evening, making it comfortable for walking slowly with children. Tips: Some sections of the trail have no railings. If you have children with you, be sure to hold their hands and stay away from the steep slopes by the river. Return to your accommodation before dark; there are no streetlights in the mountains at night, so night travel is not recommended. Local food recommendations 1. [Yanjing Jiajia Noodles] Full address: "Guolacong Tibetan Homestay," next to the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet. Average cost: CNY 25–35/person. Must-order signature dish: Jiajia noodles (served with Tibetan pig bone broth, cold dishes, and highland barley wine). Real review: Each bowl of noodles contains only five or six strands, made with alkaline water from oak tree ash, making them chewy and springy. The broth is simmered for over 12 hours with Tibetan pig bones and Yanjing well salt, resulting in a rich, savory flavor. The way to eat them is to use stones to keep count, and the server keeps adding noodles; the record is 147 bowls. It is a great experience for children and suitable for all ages. Pitfall: The noodle soup is a bit salty; if you prefer a lighter taste, you can ask the restaurant to use less salt in advance. 2. [Butter tea with tsampa] Full address: Available at all Tibetan restaurants in Yanjing Town, or at small street-side eateries in Naxi Ethnic Township. Average cost: CNY 15–20/person. Must-order signature dishes: Butter tea, tsampa. Real review: The butter tea made with local Yanjing white salt has a savory, fragrant taste with a hint of sweetness in the aftertaste, a completely different flavor from the iodized salt in supermarkets. Eating tsampa with butter tea by kneading it into balls is very filling, perfect for a snack before heading out in the morning. It is well-suited for the rainy season in August—the hot tea warms you up, and it is very cost-effective. Practical travel guide Transportation guide: The entire route follows the official G214 National Highway, and driving is the preferred method. It takes about 2–3 hours to reach Yanjing from Deqin, and about 2–3 hours from Batang via G318 and then G214. There are vans from Markam County to Yanjing Township for about CNY 30–40/person, but the schedule is not fixed, so it is recommended to ask about departure times in advance. Avoid all unlicensed vehicles and private charters. Accommodation recommendations: It is recommended to stay in the Jiada Village area of Naxi Ethnic Township, within walking distance of the salt field attraction. Lazangkang Yanjing Homestay is located in Jiada Village, just 583 meters from the salt field attraction; the owner provides explanations of the attraction, and the rooms are clean and cost-effective. Ca'yu Homestay is about a 100-meter walk from the salt field attraction; it is at a low altitude and suitable for families. Real pitfall avoidance guide: August is the peak of the rainy season in Qamdo, and the probability of rockfalls and landslides along the G318/G214 sections in Markam increases significantly. Be sure to check the road conditions for the day before departure and leave flexible time. There may be locals setting up booths at the entrance of the Yanjing attraction to collect fees; be sure to purchase tickets through official attraction channels and look for the authorized ticket office. Do not buy overpriced salt products at the entrance of the attraction; if you need to buy salt, you can buy it directly from the salt workers in the village. Avoid weekends and holiday peaks; the experience is more relaxed on weekdays. Essential items: In August, the temperature in Yanjing is about 5–22°C, with a large temperature difference between day and night. Essential items include a thin down jacket or fleece jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, non-slip flat shoes, a power bank, and a portable water bottle. During the rainy season, it is recommended to bring a lightweight raincoat, which is more practical than an umbrella. This trip to Yanjing in early August was relaxing and healing, with a slow pace, niche and uncrowded spots, delicious food without pitfalls, and great value for money. It is very suitable for families and self-driving tourists on the Yunnan-Tibet Highway as a first stop in Tibet. This guide is based on real-world experience and packed with practical tips; beginners can follow it directly to easily enjoy Markam Yanjing.

We drove away from Darchen at noon on the 21st, continuing our journey toward Ngari. We soon arrived at the Zada Earth Forest. Located in the Xiangquan River valley in Zada County, Ngari Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, the Zada Earth Forest is the largest, most typical, best-preserved, and most uniquely shaped Tertiary stratum weathering landform in the world. Many call it the "epic of the earth deep in western Tibet." Its total area is approximately 2,464 square kilometers, and this vast landscape stretches for hundreds of kilometers, endless and continuous. Looking out from a high vantage point, the layered earth forest is arranged under the blue sky and white clouds, resembling an ancient army standing in formation, carrying a heavy, solemn, and majestic aura. The forms of the Zada Earth Forest are unimaginably rich. Earth pillars, towers, walls, platforms, and fortresses are scattered about, with height differences reaching tens of meters. They have evolved into bizarre shapes resembling castles, watchtowers, sharp peaks, jungles, and treasure vases. Driving through them feels like weaving between the feet of giants.

After leaving Suosong Village, we traveled east along the G318 National Highway, heading towards Basu, Qamdo. On the way to Basu, we had another unexpected encounter with Guxiang Lake in Bomi. In early spring, Guxiang Lake lacks the dense lushness of midsummer, but it possesses a unique, cool, and gentle quality. It is a glacier-dammed lake, lying quietly among mountains and dense forests, far from the hustle and bustle, perfectly tranquil. Standing by the lake and looking into the distance, continuous snow-capped mountains stretch across the horizon, their peaks covered in pristine white snow against a clear blue sky—clean and magnificent. Faint clouds and mist wrap around the mountainsides, adding an ethereal, fairy-like quality to the entire landscape. The most moving part of the lake is the dead trees standing in the water. Ancient tree stumps of various shapes stand quietly in the clear lake water, still upright after being washed by mountain floods and enduring the plateau's wind and frost. The vicissitudes of the dead wood, the clarity of the lake water, the sanctity of the snow-capped mountains, and the fresh green of the budding forests intertwine. Decay and rebirth meet here, outlining the unique layering of the Tibetan region—desolate yet healing, wild yet gentle. A breeze brushes across the lake, rippling the surface. The clear water reflects the snow-capped mountains, blue sky, and dead trees; the mountains and water depend on each other, and everything is silent. Having seen many plateau lakes along the way, only Guxiang Lake carries a purity that has washed away all vanity, and the fatigue of the journey slowly dissipates at this moment. There are no crowded tourists here, no heavy commercial atmosphere, only the pristine mountains, rivers, and lakes, quiet enough to hear the wind, the water, and the sound of one's inner peace returning. I used to think that travel meant rushing to distant places and visiting famous attractions. After traveling the long Tibetan highways, I slowly realized that the most beautiful scenery is always on the road. Those sights we missed while rushing, those moments we didn't have time to stop for, will gently reunite with us in future journeys. This trip to Nyingchi and its surroundings feels completely different from last year. Last year's destination was Ngari, Tibet, and my heart was full of the heat and urgency of rushing to a distant place. Countless beautiful landscapes along the way became just background for the journey, only to be glimpsed and passed by in a hurry. This time, we don't want to let down the gentleness of the Tibetan region again. We plan to carefully visit Upper Ranwu Lake, Xiudeng Temple, and Lower Ranwu Lake, and also head to Bomi for a date with the spring peach blossoms. Last year, we stayed one night in Ranwu Town. The next day, we only visited the middle section of Ranwu Lake, which is what everyone calls Middle Ranwu Lake. We couldn't reach Upper Ranwu Lake due to time constraints. I know Lower Ranwu Lake has outstanding scenery, but having traveled along the road last year, I never managed to see it. Looking back now, it must have been the continuous traffic on the left side of the road that blocked the view, and combined with my unfamiliarity with the geography of this water area, we just missed it, leaving a small regret. This is probably the unique romance of G318. This road never urges travelers to rush; instead, it teaches us to slow down. There is no need to chase the crowds or be bound by an itinerary schedule. Only by stopping at the right time can we encounter the most moving gentleness of the Tibetan region and harvest these unexpected surprises and healing moments. 💡 Guxiang Lake self-driving tips 1. Location and road conditions: Located right next to the Bomi section of the G318 National Highway. It is on the way, no detour needed. Temporary parking is available on the roadside, making it self-driving friendly. 2. Travel advice: There are few tourists in early spring, the lake water is clear, and the snow on the mountains is abundant, making it great for photos. It is windy by the lake, so pay attention to wind protection and keeping warm. 3. Tips to avoid pitfalls: Traffic on the national highway is heavy, and long convoys can easily block the view. It is recommended to slow down appropriately when passing through here.

Changdu is beautiful, but I don't recommend visiting in October–November to suffer. Just finished a 4-day trip to Changdu, let me give you the honest truth🍂! The autumn scenery in Changdu is truly stunning, but coming in October–November means enduring low temperatures and long, tiring journeys, which many people find difficult. However, if you prefer quiet mountains and want to avoid the crowds, you can save this practical guide. 🌤 Local climate In October–November, daytime temperatures in Changdu are around 7–16°C. It's sunny, and the forests in the river valleys are slowly turning golden. However, the temperature difference between day and night is extreme; it drops below freezing at night, and the mountain winds are biting. The air is dry, UV rays are strong, and mountain weather is changeable, with occasional scattered light rain and rapid temperature drops. 📅 4-day itinerary Day 1: Arrive in downtown Changdu and acclimate to the altitude first🏔. No high-intensity attractions planned. In the afternoon, visit the Changdu Museum to learn about Khampa culture. In the evening, take a walk along the Lancang River, watch the river flow through the canyon, and get some rest early to conserve energy. Day 2: Day trip to Zizhu Temple. This is a must-visit hidden gem in Changdu, built suspended on a red cliff, with the autumn mountains showing layers of changing colors. There are many winding mountain roads and the drive is long, so be sure to allow plenty of time. It's freezing cold on the mountain, so don't stay too long for photos. Day 3: Qiangba Temple + Karuo Ruins. In the morning, visit Qiangba Temple; the red walls of the ancient temple paired with the autumn forest create a great atmosphere. In the afternoon, head to the Karuo Ruins to experience the ancient prehistoric civilization. The autumn colors in the valleys along the way are beautiful and perfect for photos. Day 4: A short, leisurely trip toward Markam to see the colorful forests in the river valley, then a slow journey back. Enjoy the autumn scenery on both sides of the Lancang River along the way, pick out some local specialties from shops you like, and conclude your trip. 🧳 Travel tips 1. Changdu has a high altitude and many mountain roads, making altitude sickness likely. Avoid running or jumping, and have glucose, moisturizing lip balm, and face cream ready. 2. There are many winding roads in the mountains, so drive carefully and slowly if you are self-driving. If hiring a car, prioritize drivers who are familiar with local road conditions. 3. Dress modestly when visiting temples; do not expose your shoulders or knees. Do not take photos of monks without permission. 4. Carry a thick jacket, hat, and gloves with you. Mountain weather changes quickly, so even if it's sunny, be prepared with rain gear. 🏨 Accommodation guide Prioritize staying in downtown Changdu, where dining options and pharmacies are readily available, and most rooms have oxygen supply, making it suitable for those new to the plateau. Try to avoid small inns in the mountains, as water and electricity can be unstable in autumn and winter. Accommodation near Zizhu Temple is basic, so staying overnight is not recommended; a day trip is suggested. There are many hotel options in the city; if your budget allows, choose a room with floor heating, which will be much more comfortable for keeping warm at night. 💛 Summary Why do I say I don't recommend visiting Changdu in October–November to suffer? Because the mountain roads are long and the temperatures are low, making the journey truly tiring. But looking at it from another angle, there are very few tourists this season, no crowds, and you get mountains full of colorful forests and cliffside ancient temples—it's quiet and magnificent. If you don't mind long journeys, can tolerate low temperatures, and are willing to calm your mind and experience the autumn of the Khampa region, then Changdu will definitely surprise you. For those who are afraid of the cold or long car rides, I suggest visiting in a different season.

This viral sky road in Tibet may not be a must-pass route in the future! Visiting in early autumn is when it's at its peak beauty Many people don't know that this famous winding mountain road in Tibet is undergoing a huge change. The tunnel project currently under construction will cut directly through Yela Mountain, allowing vehicles to pass through the mountain in the future without having to wind around these hundreds of hairpin turns. Once the project is completed, this route will transform from a major thoroughfare into a scenic spot dedicated to sightseeing and photography. The magnificence of this mountain canyon is worth experiencing in person this early autumn. Early autumn is the gentlest season here, free from the persistent rains of midsummer and the biting cold of winter. The meadows at the Yela Mountain pass have shed the deep green of midsummer, revealing a faint golden hue. The silhouettes of distant snow-capped peaks are clear and crisp, and a sea of clouds often drifts over the mountainside, winding between the layers of the twisting road. As you drive down into the Nujiang River Canyon in Basu County, Qamdo, Tibet, the shrubs on the slopes are tinged with light red and caramel colors. The Nujiang River, a tributary of the Jinsha River, surges at the bottom of the valley. The blue sky, colorful forests, and the winding sky road blend into one, offering a truly healing experience. 📸 [Early autumn photo spots & best times, tested for great shots] 1. Yela Mountain Pass Observation Deck (prime spot for panoramic views) Best time: 8:30–10:00 AM. The probability of morning mist is highest in early autumn. The soft side lighting outlines the curves of the road like lines on the earth. Here, you can capture the entire panorama of the 72 Bends in one shot. There is a free parking lot, making it suitable for wide-angle panoramic shots and atmospheric portraits. It is windy, so we recommend wearing a thick jacket and do not climb over the guardrails. 2. Official Mountainside Observation Deck Best time: 3:00–5:00 PM. Avoid the overhead sun at noon. With the sun shining obliquely into the canyon, the reddish-brown of the mountains and the autumn yellow of the slopes show the richest layers. It is a classic spot for road trip photos, offering close-up shots of the winding zigzag turns. ⚠️ Only here is parking allowed. Parking on the side of the road to take photos is strictly prohibited on all curved sections, as it easily causes rear-end collisions. 3. Nujiang River Canyon Suspended Observation Deck Around 5:30 PM, the setting sun shines obliquely into the canyon, and the river water glimmers with a dark golden hue, making it perfect for capturing deep, expansive canyon shots. Tips: The temperature difference between day and night in early autumn is extreme. The mountain pass is at an altitude of 4,658 meters. Even if it is 20°C at the foot of the mountain, the pass can be as low as 0°C. Keep a light down jacket with you, and do not run vigorously while taking photos to prevent altitude sickness. ⚠️ [Practical tips to avoid pitfalls, a must-read for road trips] 1. Fuel: Be sure to fill up before leaving Bangda Town. There are no gas stations along the entire descent of the 72 Bends, and many people get stuck here. 2. Vehicle brakes: For continuous long descents, switch automatic transmissions to a low gear and rely on engine braking to control speed. Do not press the brakes for long periods to prevent brake fade. When encountering large trucks on curves, slow down in advance and pull over to yield, as large vehicles need extra space to turn. 3. Road conditions: In early autumn, there may occasionally be scattered falling rocks. Pass through sections with falling rocks quickly and do not stop. Honk your horn in advance at blind curves, and overtaking on curves is strictly prohibited. 4. Supplies: There are almost no public restrooms along the way, so use the restroom in Bangda Town before you depart. You can prepare some chocolate and warm water to alleviate altitude discomfort. 5. Nujiang River Bridge: This is a special restricted area. Parking and taking photos on the bridge are prohibited. Honk your horn to pay respect when passing, drive through quickly, and do not linger. 💡 A new reflection: This sky road that has been winding for decades was once a perilous pass that was a must-traverse for entering and leaving Tibet. After the tunnel is completed, traffic efficiency will be greatly improved, the distance will be shortened by half, and driving time will be saved by more than 2 hours, so vehicles will no longer need to challenge the continuous sharp turns. But precisely because of this, the current 72 Bends is a window of time where you can experience both engineering marvels and the raw, primitive landscape. The tunnel brings convenience, but this old mountain road will permanently preserve the unique magnificence of the Hengduan Mountains. Take advantage of the clear, breezy early autumn to take a trip. Watch the sea of clouds drift over the curves, see the autumn colors blanket the canyon, and feel the romance and grandeur of the sky road.

Reasons to visit: · Ranwu Lake is a hidden gem on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway (G318). Known as the "Blue Sapphire of Eastern Tibet," it is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Carpooling/Chartering: Many travelers on the Sichuan-Tibet route choose to carpool. Vehicles are available from Bomi and Basu, which is suitable for those who do not drive. The cost is about 50–80 CNY per person. 3. Public transport: Direct buses are rare, infrequent, and inflexible. This is not recommended and is better suited for travelers with plenty of time. Must-visit spots: 1. Upper Ranwu Lake · Closest to Ranwu Town. On windless mornings, the lake surface is like a mirror, making it an excellent spot for photographing the sunrise and mountain reflections. Nearby is Duoji Zhenzhu Mountain, which adds to the atmosphere. · Fewer people are around the lake, allowing you to get close to the water and enjoy the scenery in peace. 2. Middle Ranwu Lake (popular red viewing platform) · The core spot of Ranwu Lake. The orange-red two-story viewing platform offers a high vantage point to overlook the entire lake and the distant snow-capped mountains. It is the most popular photo spot. · Parking is convenient along the national highway, so you don't have to walk far to stop and take photos. 3. Lower Ranwu Lake · The lake area extends to the foot of Laigu Glacier. The water has rich color layers, and you can view both the glacier and the lake from here with a wide field of vision. · If you have enough time, you can head directly from here to the Laigu Glacier Scenic Area to see the blue ice up close. 4. Wa Village - A small Tibetan village located by the lake. With wooden houses, wheat fields, lake water, and snow-capped mountains, it offers authentic Tibetan scenery. It is quiet and perfect for those who enjoy peaceful photography. Admission: 1. The Ranwu Lake area and all viewpoints along the way have no admission fees. You can visit for free without booking in advance. 2. Parking: Temporary stops along the national highway are free. Official parking lots usually charge 10 CNY/visit with no time limit. Be wary of private, unauthorized parking areas that may overcharge. 3. Independent paid activities: Laigu Glacier is a separate scenic area. The ticket + sightseeing bus package is about 150 CNY/person. Visiting is optional. 4. Discount policy: Students and seniors can enjoy ticket discounts at the Laigu Glacier Scenic Area with valid identification. Other tips: 1. High-altitude precautions · The altitude is nearly 3,900 meters. Upon arrival, avoid running, jumping, or strenuous exercise. Move slowly to prevent altitude sickness. Be sure to use sun protection, as the UV rays at high altitudes are very strong. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm. · There is a huge temperature difference between day and night. Even in summer, the wind by the lake is very cold, so bring a thick jacket. 2. Best time to visit · April–June: The lake water is clear and blue, and alpine rhododendrons bloom along the shore. · September–October: Beautiful autumn scenery, stable weather, and the lake water is at its most beautiful color. · July–August: Rainy season. There is a lot of rain, which can make the lake water murky and affect the scenery. 3. Important reminders · During the rainy season (July and August), mountain roads are prone to rockfalls and traffic jams. Drive carefully and pay attention to road conditions. · Do not litter by the lake. The high-altitude ecosystem is very fragile, so please take all your waste with you. · If people on the roadside try to sell you local bracelets, just politely decline if you are not interested.

The Yigong Grand Canyon is a massive gorge carved by the Yigong Zangbu, a secondary tributary of the Yarlung Zangbo River, cutting deeply into the eastern section of the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains. It is also the core part of the Yigong National Geopark in Tibet. Known as a "geological oddity" of the Qinghai‑Tibet Plateau, warm, moist air from the Indian Ocean travels north along the canyon to create a warm, humid subtropical climate that contrasts sharply with the surrounding snowy peaks and glaciers, producing an exceptionally unique landscape. Its beauty lies in a three‑dimensional terrain that looks as if split open with a single cut. 　　Yigong Grand Canyon, whose Tibetan name literally means "beautiful place," sits on the eastern foothills of the Nyenchen Tanglha, in the southeastern rift of Tibet between Bomê County and Jiali County. Unlike the globally famous Yarlung Zangbo, it quietly brings together the plateau's ruggedness and the Jiangnan region's mildness within a single river valley. 　　The Yigong Grand Canyon lies in southeastern Tibet. The canyon road begins at Tongmai town in Bomê County and runs to Jiali County in Nagqu city. The canyon is located at the junction of Nagqu, Nyingchi, and Chamdo prefectures. The winding 295 km route from Bomê to Jiali links the cultural crossroads of Khampa, Gongbu, and Ü-Tsang. Though the mountains are high and the valleys deep, the road makes the scenery accessible, and the canyon has become a new landmark on the plateau with exceptional grandeur. 　　Yigong Grand Canyon combines snow peaks and glaciers, primeval forest, deeply incised gorges, and pastoral flower fields. It has been praised as Tibet's unique "Three Gorges" and one of the Qinghai‑Tibet Plateau's most unexpectedly warm and profound secrets. 　　What makes the Yigong Grand Canyon special are its geological wonders, extreme landforms, ecological diversity, and cultural hidden gems. Most of the canyon roads are easy to travel; only a few sections are steep, winding, and covered with loose rock. 　　Geological wonders: the Yigong Gorge contains the world‑rare remains of a giant mountain collapse and China's largest marine‑type modern glacier group. The massive landslide in 2,000 created a spectacular chain of disaster relics, including barrier lakes and breach erosion zones, making the area a natural "museum of geological disasters." 　　Extreme landforms: the canyon's vertical relief exceeds 4,000 m, with snowy peaks rising on both sides and dense primeval forests and meadows at the bottom. Glacier tongues can extend down into forests at about 2,500m, creating the striking sight of "half ice and half forest." 　　Ecological diversity: influenced by warm, moist airflows, the area supports rich vegetation, including extensive rhododendron forests and the rare "moss forests." In spring, the profusion of blossoms makes the landscape seem like a divine garden. 　　Cultural hidden gems: within the canyon are pristine villages such as Bagai Township and Niwu Township, surrounded by snowy mountains and preserving traditional wooden buildings and pastoral ways of life, earning the area the nickname "Jiangnan of the snowy region." 　　The Yigong tea gardens in the canyon are Tibet's first and largest high‑altitude tea plantation (trial planting began in 1964), with an average elevation of 2,228m. Located beside Yigong Lake on a mid‑slope and shrouded in mist year‑round, the gardens are hailed as the world's highest‑altitude organic tea production base. The tea fields preserve relics of the PLA's important base during the entry into Tibet, including the "general's house," as well as traces of the ancient Tea Horse Road, reflecting human resilience and historical memory in an extreme natural environment. 　　Yigong Wetland Park, in the southern section of the canyon within Yigong Township, Bomê County, on the banks of the Yigong Zangbu River, is an important component of the Yigong National Geopark. At around 2,240m in elevation, it features a unique landscape that blends low‑altitude plateau wetlands, meadows, lakes, and snow mountains, offering a beautiful ecological environment. 　　The Yigong National Geopark within the canyon is a "living museum of geological disasters" located in Yigong Township, Bomê County, covering about 2,160 km², with an average elevation of about 3,100m. The park is defined by the world‑rare giant mountain collapse, high‑velocity landslides, river‑blocking lakes, breach‑induced channel changes forming a complete disaster chain, overlaid by China's largest marine‑type modern glacier group. Its beauty comes from the vitality that has grown from its scars. 　　In spring there are alpine rhododendrons and ancient peach groves, summer brings green valleys, matsutake mushrooms, and morning mist, autumn turns the forests into rivers of color, and winter presses the snowline down onto the peaks—the Yigong Zangbu Grand Canyon combines a "geological museum" with a "peach blossom spring." It is the most underrated yet most enduringly beautiful scroll of eastern Tibet.

When the heat still lingers across Jiangnan, perhaps the best escape is to look towards the far southeast of Tibet. Deep in the mountains of Basu County, Qamdo, beneath the Gangrigabu range, Renlongba Glacier and Danong Glacier lie in a world of ice, rock and immense silence. Here, summer feels like a distant idea. Glacial valleys stretch beneath snow-covered peaks, while blue-white ice cuts through the mountains like frozen rivers. After days of heat elsewhere, simply imagining the cold air rising from these glaciers feels refreshing. There is something humbling about standing before a landscape shaped on a timescale far beyond our own. The ice moves slowly, the mountains endure, and the seasons pass almost unnoticed beneath their immense presence. Perhaps some journeys are not about escaping summer altogether. They are about finding a place where the world still remembers what cold feels like. 📍 Renlongba Glacier & Danong Glacier, Basu County, Qamdo, Tibet, China 🇨🇳 📸 Photography Tip: Use people or nearby rocks as scale references when photographing the glaciers. Wide compositions work especially well for conveying the enormous relationship between ice, valley and mountain. ✨ Signature Feeling: A breath of winter hidden deep inside the summer mountains. When the heat refuses to leave, follow the mountains towards the ice.
