Standing right next to them, it's hard to wrap your head around how they were made by hand. They rival Longmen and Mogao in significance, but with a fraction of the crowds. The Hanging Temple (Xuankong Temple) is the second thing that’ll blow your mind. It’s literally clinging to a sheer cliff face on Mount Heng, and it’s over 1,400 years old. Looking up from the bottom, you can hardly believe people actually walk up there—until you make the climb yourself. Datong’s ancient city is encircled by nearly 7 km of city walls, restored in the Ming Dynasty style. I climbed up in the evening; from the top, you get a sprawling view of the old city's rooftops, and you really grasp the sheer scale of the place. Option 1: Ready-made transfer through Trip.com (My choice 🌟) The fastest and most hassle-free option in terms of logistics. You book your bus transfer directly here on Trip.com (for example, popular routes from BusDa or ZANBUS). You'll be met at a designated Beijing metro station (usually Dongzhimen or Line 2), driven directly to the wall on a comfortable bus, and—most importantly—the guide will buy all your entrance tickets for you right away. No lines at Chinese ticket offices or panicking. 💴 Cost: Around 80-140 yuan (~1000-1800 rubles) for a roundtrip bus. Option 2: Using Public Transport From the Dongzhimen bus station, take express bus #916 Express. A one-way ticket costs 10 yuan (~130 rubles). The Chinese subway turned out to be one of the most convenient, intuitive, and modern I've ever used. Yes, there can be a lot of stations. Yes, there are a lot of passengers, too. But after your first ride, you realize: everything is so logically arranged that it's impossible to get lost. Step 1. Pay for your fare The most convenient option for tourists is Alipay. To do this, you need to open a travel card (anew in each city!!). And in the subway itself, simply open the transport QR code (Transport/Metro), tap it on the turnstile, and the money will be automatically debited from the linked card. + The Nihao, China app works the same way! ❗️Important: you need to show the QR code not only at the entrance but also at the exit. The fare in China depends on the number of stations, so where you exit the subway is crucial. If Alipay isn't set up yet, don't worry. There are machines at every station where you can buy a single ticket. What's convenient: · the interface can be switched to English; · the machines accept cash (not everywhere) and Chinese bank cards, and in many cities, payment via Alipay and WeChat Pay. The same applies to the ticket: you need to keep it until the end of your trip and then insert it back into the turnstile when you exit. The first few days, I wrote my request in a translator every time, but then (ATTENTION, LIFEHACKER!) I took a screenshot and put it on my desktop. It became easier and faster. Step 3. Find the right line Almost all metro navigation is available in English. The maps show: · line number; · line color; · name of the final station; · transfers. The main rule is very simple: remember the final station of your line, not the platform number. This is always indicated on the signs. And check the map from time to time. Step 4. Don't worry about the language Almost everywhere, announcements are first in Chinese and then in English. Station names are also written in Latin characters. So, even without knowing Chinese, using the subway is quite easy. Plus, there are electronic station indicators in the cars (at least in Shanghai, Chongqing, and Beijing, where I was). What was a pleasant surprise 🚻 Free restrooms are available at every station. And that's no exaggeration. During long walks around the city, this is a real lifesaver. Moreover, most restrooms are clean and regularly cleaned. The only thing I recommend is always bringing dry and wet wipes. There is no toilet paper in the stalls. You can either get it at the entrance or bring your own. ❄️ Air conditioning is available in the cars in the summer. After a walk through hot Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou, stepping into a subway car is a special treat. The air conditioning is very efficient. If you get cold easily, I recommend carrying a light shirt or sweater in your backpack—it's useful not only on the subway but also in shopping malls, museums, and cafes. Also, in China, there are two types of train car cooling: the first and last ones will always be cooler than those in the city center. 📱 It's almost impossible to make a mistake on the platforms Electronic diagrams hang above each door. They show: · current station; · next stop; · direction of travel. Inside the cars, electronic displays display the same information. 🚇 Everyone stands in line Lines are drawn on the platform. Passenger flow behaves differently in different cities. In Shanghai, everyone follows the arrows: everyone lines up at the sides of the doors and lets those leaving first. Then they calmly board themselves. In Beijing, two crowds of people move toward each other (not just during rush hour). Here's what helped make my experience truly awesome. 💯 🗺️ Navigation and Maps Google Maps doesn't work in China. Just forget about it. Use local maps like Amap (which supports English and other languages). I highly recommend not just downloading the app, but saving all the spots you want to visit in advance. The interface is quite different from the Google Maps or Yandex Maps you're used to, so it's best to get the hang of it before your trip. 🧭 🚇 Transportation The subway is pretty straightforward: download a subway map app and navigate using that. Different cities have their own quirks with transit cards, but it's not hard to figure out. Taxis, on the other hand, are a bit more interesting. You can only pay for a cab in China using a bank card or a QR code via WeChat or Alipay. Unfortunately, Russian UnionPay cards won't work here. 😤 But there's a workaround! I've put together a separate guide on how to top up your WeChat balance using a Russian UnionPay card. The available limits will be more than enough for you. For ride-hailing, I recommend DiDi—there might be better apps out there, but this one worked perfectly for me. 🚕💸 For getting from the airport, I highly recommend booking an airport transfer on Trip.com. It's cheap and super convenient. In Beijing, for example, it cost us about $15-20. So definitely make sure to download a handy translator app, preferably one that works offline. I used the standard Apple Translate app, and it was more than enough for me. 📲🌐 🔒 Internet The internet in China is fast, but most of the services you're used to (Instagram, Google, WhatsApp) are blocked. I highly recommend getting a reliable VPN before your trip—download and set it up in advance. 🛡️ ✈️ Airports Security checks and screenings at Chinese airports are incredibly thorough. Keep in mind that it can take a long time to get through them. This is especially true if the airport isn't popular with tourists (and even worse if you have a domestic flight out of one)—security times can increase significantly. 🛂 On the bright side, there are no crazy markups on food and goods at Chinese airports. Late spring is the season when the Weishi flower (Kolkwitzia amabilis) is in full bloom. It's more commonly known as 'Beauty Bush', derived from its English name. Learning that Taifeng Park in Binhai New Area has a large number of them, I drove over during the May Day holiday to admire them. I also unexpectedly saw the full-blooming Fringe Tree and Catalpa trees (see note 'Fringe Tree blossoms like April snow, Catalpa blooms like clouds'). A 100-kilometer round trip was well worth it. When the Beauty Bush is in full bloom, dense clusters of pale pink or creamy white flowers crowd the branches. The drooping branches resemble cascades of pink flowers, and if you get close, you can smell a faint, delicate fragrance. 🦔 It's called 'Weishi' (Kolkwitzia) because the fruits it bears after the flowers fade are very distinctive. The surface of the fruit is covered with sharp yellow bristles, making them look like tiny hedgehogs curled into a ball. 📜 The Weishi flower is not only beautiful but also a monotypic genus endemic to China, considered a living fossil in the plant kingdom.
