It’s better to visit both in the morning. Shaoxing’s pace is slow, ideal for young kids to explore leisurely without tiring out parents. 03 Anqing | Anhui Mount Tianzhu is definitely an overlooked summer escape. We drove to the south gate, took the cable car up, and rented jackets because the wind at the summit could blow you away. The kids saw the misty peaks and kept shouting, “The monsters from Journey to the West are coming!” They were so excited. 🚄 It’s only 40 minutes by high-speed train from Hefei to Anqing West Station, then about an hour by taxi to the scenic area, half the price of going to Huangshan. I recommend the Xiguan route, which has strange rocks, unique pines, and sea of clouds. The whole hike takes about three hours, doable for kids in elementary school and up. If you have elderly or toddlers, just go as far as Liandan Lake. The lake reflects the peaks like a painting. 🍜 After descending, go to Qianshan town for mountain rice balls with braised pork. It’s much cheaper to buy them at the base. 04 Longnan | Gansu Longnan is Gansu’s little Jiangnan, cool and humid in summer. We mainly visited Wen County’s Tianchi Lake and Guaneigou. Tianchi is hidden deep in the mountains, with water so blue it doesn’t look real, like a giant emerald. The kids spent an hour skipping stones by the lake. ⚠️ The road to Tianchi is tricky with many mountain curves. Bring motion sickness medicine if needed. The next day, we went to the Chilechuan Grassland Cultural Tourism Area. Though smaller than Hulunbuir, it’s less crowded, with reasonable horse-riding prices. Walking along the lake to Zhaoling, the kids enjoyed the story of Emperor Huang Taiji. At 3 PM, we went to Expo Garden, where the rose garden and lily sea were in full bloom.
