Kyoto travel guide and discussion

Kyoto has been on my must see list for a few years and finally I made it. There are so many things to see and I decided day one head outside after my 9am hotel breakfast. I recommend to book a hotel with breakfast because it requires some effort to find a restaurant that opens before 11 or 11:30 in Japan. 1 - Kyoto Station and Kyoto Tower. A bit of the modern world. 2 - Nishi Hongan-ji. The wood that was used in this Temple and the entry gates is gorgeous and some of the pillars and beams are massive. 3- Strolling along some residential streets and go into a 100¥ shop. 4 - We had to stop for an iced and very sugary milk oolong bubble tea and it was delicious. 5 - Gion, Yasaka Pagoda, Yasaka Pagoda. These areas had the most tourists and from all over the world. 6 - Sushi dinner - We had met some Japanese sisters from Tokyo and they told us about a great place. My Japanese is limited but I can use the vocabulary to create sentences, it helps!#japantravel #kyoto #travel2026 #japan #sushi #kansai Now what to plan for Day 2? Any suggestions?

One of the best day trips in Japan, that I would recommend to everyone is Uji, history, architecture, unesco sites, matcha... Uni has it all and I'm sure you'll fall in love with it! Uji, a historic city in Kyoto Prefecture, located between Kyoto and Nara along the Uji River, is considered the japanese birthplace of matcha, all the highest quality brands are located and originated from here and the small town offers any type of matcha themed food, souvenir and experience you can think of (and more!)!! Other than matcha, and not less important, the main attractions in Uji are: · Byodoin Temple: Built in 1052, its famous Phoenix Hall is a UNESCO World Heritage site and appears on the 10-yen coin. · Ujigami Shrine: Recognized as the oldest surviving original Shinto shrine structure in Japan and a UNESCO World Heritage site. · Uji Bridge: Originally built in 646 CE, it is counted among the oldest bridges in the country. · The Tale of Genji: Uji is the scenic and emotional setting for the final chapters of the classic Heian-period novel, featuring dedicated statues and a local museum. · Nintendo Museum: Located in the Ogura area of Uji, offering interactive exhibits on Nintendo's history. Getting is quick and simple, here is how, depending from where your day trip is starting from: · From Kyoto Station: Take the JR Nara Line straight to Uji Station (about 20 minutes). · From Osaka/Kyoto via Keihan Line: Transfer at Chushojima to the Keihan Uji Line to reach Uji Station (about 30 minutes total)

If you're in Kyoto, be sure to stop by Kumonocha Cafe (雲ノ茶) in the Arashiyama district. This place is a true paradise for aesthetes and lovers of Japanese tea. The second-floor interior is completely inspired by the famous bamboo grove just around the corner. But the main attraction here is the desserts! 📸 What you must order for beautiful photos (and incredible taste): · Kumo no Mousse – the famous cloud cake. The outside is crispy white chocolate, and the inside is a delicate mousse of premium Uji matcha and sweet azuki paste. · Bamboo tiramisu – exclusive to the Arashiyama branch, served in a real bamboo leaf. · Matcha latte – with a perfect fluffy cloud design on the foam. Useful travel details: · Address: Kyoto, Ukyo, Sagatenryuji Tsukurimichicho, 20-13 (close to Togetsukyo Bridge and the bamboo forest). · Budget: A dessert and drink set costs approximately 1,000-1,200 yen. · Reservations are not available; there is a line at the entrance. #japantrip #japantravel #kyoto #京都

Japan has always been a dream destination, and exploring it over a 9-day journey was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions, awe-inspiring sights, and lots of walking! ✈️🇯🇵 To be completely honest, navigating Japan’s transit system was a real challenge at first. Between taking a few wrong train routes (which cost us extra Yen! 😂🚆) and walking tens of thousands of steps daily until our feet hurt, it was exhausting. But despite the fatigue and tight budget, every single moment felt like a core memory. Here are 10 incredible spots we explored that made every single step worth it: 1. 🗽 Odaiba Statue of Liberty: Gorgeous coastal views with the iconic Rainbow Bridge in the background. 2. ⛩️ Senso-ji Temple: Tokyo’s oldest and most vibrant traditional temple. 3. 🚦 Shibuya Crossing: The legendary, fast-paced scramble crossing that truly captures Tokyo's energy. 4. 🦖 Godzilla Head & Shinjuku: Exploring the neon-lit, energetic heart of Shinjuku. 5. ⚡ Akihabara: The ultimate paradise for anime, gaming, and pop culture fans. 6. 🗻 Mount Fuji: Witnessing Japan’s majestic and iconic natural wonder. 7. ⛩️ Fushimi Inari Torii Gates (Kyoto): Walking through thousands of vermilion torii gates up the sacred mountain. 8. 🎋 Arashiyama Bamboo Grove (Kyoto): Wandering through soaring green bamboo stalks in pure tranquility. 9. 🏮 Shinsekai (Osaka): Nostalgic retro vibes, glowing signboards, and bustling street culture. 10. 🌆 Osaka City: A lively city full of charm (even though a bit of rain forced us to slow down!). 🌸 The Only Regret? Missing the Sakura (Cherry Blossom) season! Since we traveled off-season, seeing the cherry blossoms remains an unfulfilled dream. InshaAllah, I’ll be back one day just for the pink blooms! 🥀✨ 💡 Practical Pro Tips for First-Timers to Japan: Don't Overpack Your Day: Limit your itinerary to 2–3 major spots per day so you don't burn out. Master the Transit Apps: Use Google Maps or Navitime to double-check train lines, platform numbers, and fares to avoid wrong turns. Stay Near a Metro Station: Ensure your hotel is within a short walking distance of a major station. Wear Very Comfortable Shoes: You will easily log 15,000–25,000 steps daily. Comfortable walking shoes are a lifesaver! 👟 Plan Around Seasons: If Sakura or autumn foliage is a priority, double-check blooming forecasts before booking flights. Locate Halal Spots in Advance: Halal options aren't available at every convenience store, so mark Halal-certified eateries on your map beforehand. Despite the swollen feet and navigation mistakes, Japan completely captured my heart! 🖤🇯🇵 💬 To those who have visited Japan: Which spot was your absolute favorite? 💬 If Japan is still on your bucket list: Which place are you dreaming of visiting first? Japanese supermarkets are a delight in themselves: seasonal fruits 🍊, edible flowers 🌼, ready-made bento boxes 🍱, and evening discounts 🏷️. In Kyoto, Aeon Mall Kyoto and the Kohyo supermarket within the mall are especially convenient. 🏬 Aeon Mall Kyoto Aeon is one of Japan's largest chains, and its malls combine a supermarket, clothing, cosmetics, a pharmacy, and a cafe. Aeon Mall Kyoto Gojo has about 140 stores, and prices are lower than in department stores. At Kohyo, you can buy fruits and vegetables 🥬, sushi 🍣, onigiri 🍙, bento boxes 🍱, meat, fish, snacks, and drinks—convenient for both dinner and breakfast. 🍊 Square Persimmons and Edible Flowers In the fall, persimmons (kaki) appear here: large, bright orange, sometimes almost square fruits in neat packages 🧡. In Japan, they are eaten fresh, added to desserts, or dried. Another pleasant find are inexpensive edible flowers and greens: nana-hana 🌼, edible chrysanthemums, microgreens, sprouts, and shiso—fragrant perilla leaves 🌿. 🏷️ Evening Discounts The main life hack is to arrive after 7:00 PM ⏰. Discount stickers are placed on bento boxes, sushi, onigiri, and prepared meals, and closer to closing, prices can drop by up to 50% 🤩. 🌿 A funny story with perilla One time, instead of wasabi, we bought a tube of perilla 😅—and only later discovered it wasn't a hot spice, but a Japanese herb that locals love to add to rice, fish, rolls, and tempura. It was an unexpected flavor for us, but for the Japanese, it's a completely ordinary staple 🍚🐟. #Kyoto #Japan #aeonmallkyoto #JapaneseSupermarkets #JapanTravel #KyotoTravelGuide #JapaneseCuisine #Persimmon #EdibleFlowers #Perilla #Shiso #Bento #Sushi #EveningDiscounts #JapaneseLifestyle

The Tokaido Shinkansen line runs between Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka—the fastest and most convenient way to travel Japan's "golden route." Trains reach speeds of approximately 285–300 km/h, and up to 320 km/h on certain sections of Japanese lines. What trains are available? There are three main types of trains on this route. They travel along the same line, but differ in the number of stops and travel time. · Nozomi is the fastest option with the fewest stops. It takes approximately 2 hours 10–20 minutes from Tokyo to Kyoto, and 2 hours 30 minutes from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka. Departures approximately every 10 minutes. · Hikari is slightly slower due to its more frequent stops. The journey to Kyoto takes approximately 2 hours 40 minutes, and to Shin-Osaka, approximately 3 hours. Departs approximately twice an hour. · Kodama — stops at all stations on the line, making it primarily suitable for intermediate cities. The journey to Kyoto or Osaka can take up to 4 hours. It runs approximately twice an hour. Is there a price difference? Yes, but not much. The base price of tickets on the Nozomi, Hikari, and Kodama on the same route is almost the same: the difference is mainly due to the surcharge for the faster Nozomi and the seat class selected. · Tokyo to Kyoto: A standard car costs approximately 13,300–14,200 yen one-way. · Tokyo to Shin-Osaka: Approximately 14,500–15,000 yen for a standard seat with a reservation on the Nozomi. · Kyoto to Shin-Osaka: The journey takes approximately 15 minutes and costs from 1,450 yen without a reservation. Travel time from Osaka and Kyoto to Tokyo · Osaka (Shin-Osaka Station) - Tokyo: approximately 2 hours 30 minutes on Nozomi, approximately 3 hours on Hikari, and up to 4 hours on Kodama. · Kyoto - Tokyo: approximately 2 hours 10-20 minutes on Nozomi, approximately 2 hours 40 minutes on Hikari, and up to 4 hours on Kodama. It's important to remember the stations: in Osaka, the Shinkansen departs from Shin-Osaka Station, not Osaka Station. From there, the city center is easily reached by subway or regular JR train. How frequent are the trains? The intervals are very convenient. The Nozomi departs approximately every 10 minutes throughout the day, so you usually don't have to wait long for the train you need. Hikari and Kodama run less frequently, with approximately two trains per hour. Practical advice If you're buying tickets separately and just want a quick trip, choose the Nozomi: the extra charge is usually small, but the time savings are significant. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, check the terms and conditions in advance: the standard pass typically covers Hikari and Kodama, but the Nozomi may require an extra charge. For the short Osaka-Kyoto trip, the Shinkansen isn't always necessary: the regular JR Special Rapid train takes about 30 minutes and costs around 580 yen. The Shinkansen saves time, but is significantly more expensive. #Japan #Tokyo #Kyoto #Osaka #Shinkansen #JapanTravel #JapanTrains #Tripcom #traveljapan #japantravel #TokyoKyotoOsaka #BulletTrains #JapanTravelGuide #jrpass #JapanTravel

Hi, guys! Some travel aspirations fade within weeks; others endure for years. Sapporo has remained on my list since 2012, and the prospect of finally seeing it makes this journey feel considerably more meaningful than an ordinary holiday. I have already been fortunate to visit Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hakodate, yet Sapporo has persistently eluded me. Perhaps it is the snow-covered streets and the quiet atmosphere of Hokkaido that appeal to me, or the chance to encounter a side of Japan beyond its more familiar attractions. I cannot say precisely. What I do find remarkable is that a single destination can remain in one’s thoughts for so long, even as countless other places are discovered along the way. This, I believe, reveals something about our travel personalities. Some journeys are prompted by a fashionable destination or a favorable flight fare, while others arise from years of imagining oneself in a particular place, and from the wish to finally make that vision real. There is a distinctive satisfaction in the latter, for arriving is not merely reaching a location; it is fulfilling an ambition that has accompanied me through several chapters of my life. I would now like to hear about your travel dreams: What would most motivate you to visit your dream destination? I am curious which motivation will prevail. Aside from casting your votes in the poll, if there is a destination you have longed to visit for years, please share in the comments where it is and why it matters to you. It may well inspire another reader to begin planning! Thanks a lot, guys! #polltime

You've seen the photos: the perfect Mount Fuji view, the dreamy streets of Kyoto, the torii gates, the cherry blossoms and the cafés that look almost too beautiful to be real... But when a place becomes famous online, people sometimes arrive with one goal: recreate the exact same photo. They wait in line for the shot, take dozens of pictures, and leave without exploring anything else nearby. Of course, photography is part of the fun. But is it possible that the pressure to get the perfect picture is changing the way we experience Japan? #polltime

Serving as the imperial capital of Japan for over a millennium (from 794 to 1868), Kyoto is the cultural heart of traditional Japanese heritage. Spared the extensive aerial bombing of World War II, the city preserves more than 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, imperial palaces, preserved wooden machiya merchant townhouses, and classical dry stone (karesansui) Zen gardens. Key Stops and Scenic Walkways Fushimi Inari-Taisha: Dedicated to the Shinto god of rice and commerce, this shrine is globally famous for its Senbon Torii—thousands of vermilion wooden gates straddling forested mountain paths. The entire loop up Mount Inari takes about 2 to 3 hours, but walking past the lower split tunnels (Yotsutsuji intersection) thins out 80% of the tour groups and opens up panoramic views across southern Kyoto. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove & Tenryu-ji: A towering corridor of vertical bamboo stalks located in the western outskirts along the Oi River. Directly adjacent sits Tenryu-ji, a premier Zen temple featuring a 14th-century landscape garden designed by Muso Soseki, framing Mount Arashiyama using traditional "borrowed scenery" (shakkei). Kiyomizu-dera (Higashiyama): A sprawling wooden temple founded in 778 on the slopes of Mount Otowa. The main hall features an expansive timber stage constructed entirely without nails, projecting 13 meters above the hillside with views over maple canopies toward the city skyline. Below, visitors drink from the three streams of the Otowa Waterfall for health, longevity, or success. Kinkaku-ji (The Golden Pavilion): A Zen Buddhist temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in pure gold leaf. The pavilion sits directly over the Kyoko-chi (Mirror Pond), creating crisp water reflections framed by manicured pine islands. Gion & Ninenzaka/Sannenzaka Preservation Districts: Step through preserved stone-paved alleys lined with traditional timber lattice facades, traditional teahouses (ochaya), and lantern-lit stone staircases leading down from Kiyomizu-dera. Keep an eye out for geiko and maiko heading to evening appointments along Hanami-koji street. Practical Logistics & Route Tips Timing is Everything: Arrive at Fushimi Inari before 07:00 AM and the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove before 07:30 AM. By 09:00 AM, both locations become packed with tour groups and foot traffic. Fushimi Inari is open 24/7 with lantern-lit evening paths, making late-night walks atmospheric and quiet. Getting Around (Buses vs. Trains): While city buses cover most sights, Kyoto traffic can cause heavy delays along major corridors like Kawaramachi and Higashiyama. Rely primarily on rail and subway networks: take the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station straight to Saga-Arashiyama (15 mins), the JR Nara Line directly to Inari Station (5 mins), and the Keihan Main Line for easy access between Gion-Shijo and southern shrines. Tap through turnstiles using digital IC cards (Suica, Pasmo, or ICOCA). Respecting Historic Districts & Etiquette: Private side alleys across Gion have strict no-photography signs to protect working geiko/maiko and local residents; fines are strictly enforced by local wardens. Always respect private property signs. When entering temple halls and tatami rooms, slip off outdoor shoes and place them in the provided shelves or bags. Keep voices lowered in prayer courtyards. Luggage Forwarding (Takuhaibin): Kyoto’s buses and commuter trains have limited space for oversized rolling suitcases. If traveling from Tokyo or Osaka, forward large luggage directly to your Kyoto hotel via Yamato Transport luggage services at the airport or train station. #Kyoto #VisitKyoto #JapanTravel #ExploreJapan #FushimiInari #Arashiyama #Gion #Kiyomizudera #TripMoments #travel2026#travel#couplestrip#myitinerary

After long hours of walking through the mystical temples of Kyoto (I was just exploring the majestic Nanzen-ji complex with its famous brick aqueduct), I was longing for a cozy place to rest. Just a few minutes from the temple, I stumbled upon a cafe that is simply impossible to pass by—Blue Bottle Coffee Kyoto Cafe. 🌏 What’s the story behind this chain? For those unfamiliar with the brand, Blue Bottle Coffee is a legendary "third-wave coffee" chain that originated in California. They are often called the "Apple of the coffee world" for their fanatical devotion to bean quality, roasting freshness, and impeccable minimalism. They open unique cafes all over the world, but the Kyoto branch is their absolute crown jewel. 🪵 An Interior to Fall in Love With: The cafe occupies a renovated 100-year-old traditional Japanese townhouse (machiya). Outside, you'll find weathered wooden panels, a tiled roof, and heavy beams. But once you step inside, you enter a world of high-tech minimalism: high ceilings, panoramic windows, plenty of light, concrete floors, gravel paths, and the signature sleek counter made of light wood. This contrast of centuries-old Japanese aesthetics and modern Californian simplicity is incredibly stylish! 🍵🥭 My Perfect Refreshment Pick: While Blue Bottle is famous for its coffee, you must try their local and seasonal masterpieces in Japan. My order: · Seasonal Mango and Pie Parfait. Pure culinary magic in a glass! Vibrant, juicy chunks of ripe mango, delicate cream, and crunchy, fragrant pieces of homemade pie. Every spoonful is a play of textures, from refreshing coolness to a satisfying crunch. This parfait instantly brings you back to life after walking tens of thousands of steps on stone paths. · Matcha Latte. Perfectly frothed and silky, with a smooth yet rich and deep flavor of premium Japanese tea without any cloying sweetness. The perfect contrast to the bright tropical mango! Sitting in this sun-drenched space, listening to the quiet hum of coffee machines, looking out at the green inner courtyard, and slowly enjoying a dessert—this is the perfect balance between history and modernity. 📍 Highly recommend adding this to your Kyoto itinerary: 64 Nanzenji Kusakawacho, Sakyo Ward.

Kyoto's autumn, much like its other seasons, is typically defined by its small and exquisite nature. Even the famous Tofuku-ji's Tsutenkyo Bridge is limited by the urban landscape and isn't particularly large. The same goes for Kiyomizu-dera, Togetsukyo Bridge, and Rurikoin... But tucked away in the remote outskirts of Ohara at Sanzen-in, I discovered a side of Kyoto's autumn that feels anything but "Kyoto": vast, majestic, and vibrant with layered colors. Sanzen-in features three expansive gardens built between the Edo and Heisei periods. Free from urban space constraints, the autumn scenery here offers incredible depth. Both the gardens and the hillside are lush with trees, creating layers of color. Every turn offers a new, perfect photo opportunity. When the afternoon light filters through the maples, the entire forest feels as though it's bathed in a crimson mist. Walking through it feels like drifting through a dream. As you stroll through the woods, keep an eye out for the hidden Jizo statues. These little figures, with their varied expressions, wear moss as hats and red leaves as blankets, nestled within the verdant landscape. Instead of feeling bleak, there's a playful energy to the scene. 🍁 Due to its high altitude, the Ohara region is one of the first areas in Kyoto to see autumn colors. The leaves at Sanzen-in usually reach their peak two weeks earlier than in the city center.

Kyoto has a way of saying goodbye to the day that is truly stunning. 🌅 The sky slowly shifts through shades of pink, orange, and lilac, as the city seems to stand still, bathed in a warm golden glow. 🍂 The views from the hills and temple grounds are particularly striking: wooden terraces, pagodas, traditional facades, and distant mountain peaks create scenes so perfect they hardly need a filter. 📸⛩️ As the sun dips lower, Kyoto transforms: the lanterns flicker on, the streets grow hushed, and the air fills with that unmistakable Japanese essence—calm, mindful, and tinged with nostalgia. 🏮🌙 Sometimes, it’s enough to just pause, look up at the sky, and realize that some moments aren't meant to be rushed. ✨😌

Lost in the magic of the Bamboo Forest! 🎋🌿✨🇯🇵 #BambooForest #KyotoJapan #JapanVibes #NatureEscape #TravelGoals #ExploreJapan #Wanderlust

We were staying at the Prince Smart Sanjo hotel and decided to take a stroll nearby one evening to grab some ramen. 🌙 We initially headed to a popular ramen spot where you order via a vending machine before being seated. Unfortunately, we were met with a pretty cold reception from the staff right at the door. We didn't want to ruin our night, so we decided to move on and find somewhere else. 😕 That’s how we stumbled upon Noodle House EDITION Kyoto Main Branch (麺屋EDITION京都本店)—and it was the best decision ever! 😍 The staff was incredibly welcoming, and the atmosphere was super chill and pleasant. 🤗 Our phones were nearly dead, and we didn't have a charging cable on us. The staff was kind enough to help out and charged our phones for us. It’s a small thing, but those are the details that make you feel truly taken care of as a guest. 📱🔌💛 We snagged a seat by the window on the second floor and enjoyed the view of Kyoto at night. 🌃 The ramen and gyoza arrived fast. The portions were huge and very satisfying; the ramen was rich, savory, and hearty—absolutely delicious—though honestly, we couldn't even finish the whole thing. 🍜🥟😋 If you're near Noodle House EDITION Kyoto Main Branch, I highly recommend stopping by. Great ramen, generous portions, a cozy vibe, and top-tier service. It’s spots like this that really stick with you after a trip. ❤️🇯🇵

Nishiki Market in Kyoto is the real "Kitchen of Kyoto" 🍜🏮 This narrow, covered street stretches about 400 meters and is packed with over 100 stalls and shops showcasing the very best of Kyoto’s culinary traditions. With a history spanning over 400 years, it began as a fish market and has evolved into a beloved destination for locals and travelers alike. The air here is thick with the aroma of fresh dashi, grilled eel, and fragrant green tea 🍵✨ Don’t miss out on trying the tsukemono (pickled vegetables), silky tofu and yuba, fluffy dashimaki tamago (rolled omelet), mackerel sushi, and various matcha-infused treats. Beyond the food, you’ll find exquisite Kyo-yaki ceramics, professional-grade knives, tea sets, and artisanal spices—perfect souvenirs to take home. A word of advice: expect "tourist pricing" 💸 A few street snacks can easily end up costing more than a full meal at a local Japanese diner. Visit Nishiki for the incredible atmosphere, the unique tastings, and the experience itself, but keep in mind that dining here exclusively can get quite pricey. Pro tip: Aim to arrive around 11:00 AM 🕚 The market gets incredibly crowded as the day goes on, and some shops close early or observe irregular hours. Take your time, enjoy small bites, and soak it all in—Nishiki is the kind of place where you’ll want to stop and admire every single stall. This isn't just a place to shop; it's a living piece of Kyoto’s heritage, filled with family-run stalls, traditional ingredients, and that unmistakable old-world charm 🇯🇵🌸 If you find yourself in Kyoto, Nishiki Market is a must-visit, just be sure to keep an eye on your wallet 😉

🏮🇯🇵 NARAI-JUKU — Where Time Stands Still A village where time stands still... take your heart on a journey back to the Japan of yesteryear. 🍁🤎 Have you ever wanted to step into the old Japan you’ve only seen in movies? Narrow streets lined with historic wooden houses, traditional Japanese storefront signs, lanterns hanging from eaves, and mountains quietly cradling the village... Such a place truly exists at Narai-juku (奈良井宿) in Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. 🇯🇵 This historic village on the Nakasendo trail (中山道) has beautifully preserved the architecture and atmosphere of the Edo period. 🏮 STROLLING THROUGH TIME — The Historic Road Where Time Remains Dating back to the Edo period (1603–1868), the Nakasendo was one of the vital routes connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto. Narai-juku served as a post town for travelers, merchants, and samurai journeying through the mountains. In its prime, the village was so prosperous it was nicknamed "Narai of a Thousand Houses." Stretching about one kilometer, this historic street is still home to well-preserved wooden houses, shops, and heritage buildings today. 🤎 WOODEN ELEGANCE — The Charm of Traditional Timber Houses The beauty of Narai-juku lies in the small details you might otherwise overlook: 🏡 Sliding wooden doors and traditional Japanese latticework 🏮 Shop signs and lanterns that complete the old-town vibe 🌿 Timber buildings and pathways set against a mountain backdrop 📸 Photo spots along the ancient road that feel like stepping back hundreds of years You don’t need flashy activities here; simply walking slowly and observing the architectural details is a joy in itself. 🎨 CRAFTS OF KISO — Heritage Passed Down Through Generations The Kiso Valley is renowned for its woodwork and Japanese lacquerware (Kiso Lacquerware / 木曽漆器). As you explore, you’ll find shops selling handcrafted items such as: 🥢 Wooden chopsticks 🍵 Lacquerware bowls and vessels 🎁 Wooden home goods and local souvenirs These items reflect the wisdom and skill of craftsmen passed down through generations. 🍵 TEA, SOBA & SLOW MOMENTS — Finding Joy in Not Rushing When you start to feel tired, stop by a local restaurant or a small teahouse in the old quarter. 🍜 Soba — Buckwheat noodles, the signature dish of the Kiso region 🍡 Gohei Mochi — Mashed rice skewers, grilled and glazed with a sweet and savory sauce 🍵 Japanese Tea — Sip warm tea while soaking in the atmosphere of the wooden houses Sometimes, the best part of traveling is just sitting down for a simple meal and watching life in a small town through an old wooden window. 🍁 THE BEAUTY OF FOUR SEASONS — Charm All Year Round 🌸 Spring — The air turns mild as trees bud and flowers bloom 🌿 Summer — Lush green mountains frame the old town walks 🍁 Autumn — Golden, orange, and red leaves add warmth to the wooden houses ❄️ Winter — A chance to see snow blanketing the rooftops and ancient streets Each season offers a different feeling. For those who love the romantic atmosphere of old Japan, I highly recommend visiting during the autumn. 🍂 🚆 HOW TO GET THERE — Getting to Narai-juku 📍 Narai-juku, Shiojiri, Nagano, Japan From Tokyo: 🚉 Start at Shinjuku Station 🚃 Take the Limited Express Azusa to Shiojiri Station 🚃 Transfer to the JR Chuo Line and get off at Narai Station ⏰ Total travel time is approximately 3 hours or more, depending on connections From Nagoya: 🚃 Take the Limited Express Shinano to Kiso-Fukushima, then transfer to a local train to Narai Station ⏰ Takes about 2.5 hours 🚶 From Narai Station, the historic district is just a few minutes’ walk away. 💡 LITTLE TRAVEL TIPS — Before You Go ♡ Allow 2–4 hours for strolling if you enjoy photography and visiting shops. ♡ Visit during the day, as many shops close relatively early. ♡ Wear comfortable walking shoes. ♡ Check the return train schedule, as local trains may not run frequently. ♡ Some houses are private residences; please respect the community’s privacy. 🤎 Some places impress us not because of their grandeur... But make us fall in love because of their simplicity. The sound of footsteps on the old road, the scent of wood from ancient homes, the golden sunlight filtering through the eaves—these stories live in every corner of the village. “Sometimes the most beautiful journey is walking back to a time when the world spun a little slower.” 🏮🍁 📌 Save this post for your next trip to Japan. 💬 If you could visit a traditional Japanese village, would you rather go during the red leaf season 🍁 or on a snowy day ❄️?

If you're visiting Osaka or Kyoto, Nara Deer Park is definitely worth a visit! The park is famous for its free-roaming deer, and you can get up close to them. 🥰 💕 The baby deer are absolutely adorable! They're so cute to watch, and I really enjoyed seeing them roaming around freely. ⚠️ BUT the bigger deer are a completely different story! 🤣 Once you start feeding them deer crackers, some of the bigger ones can get really aggressive. They'll bite your clothes and bags, and once they realise you have food, they'll keep following you around! Things got so chaotic that one deer even hit me on my thigh, leaving soil and mud all over it. 😭 I came here expecting a cute deer-feeding experience, but ended up with a dirty thigh instead! 😂 The funniest part? I actually went all the way to the car park to feed the deer because the ones in the main area were just too aggressive! I thought I could find some peace there, away from all the hungry deer. ✨ Tips for visiting Nara Deer Park: · 🦌 The baby deer are adorable, but stay alert around the bigger ones. · 👜 Keep your bags and loose clothing away from their mouths. · 🍘 Be prepared for several deer to surround you once you take out the crackers. · 🚶 If a deer becomes pushy or aggressive, stop feeding it and move away calmly. · 📸 Enjoy taking photos, but always keep a safe distance if the deer become too persistent. Overall, Nara Deer Park is a memorable experience, but don't let their cute faces fool you! 😂 The baby deer stole my heart, while the bigger ones gave me a whole adventure of their own. Have you ever been chased or bullied by the deer in Nara? Or were yours well-behaved? 🦌🤣 #NaraDeerPark #NaraJapan #JapanTravel #OsakaTravel #JapanTravelTips

Every time I visit Kyoto, I go back to some of my faviourite places while also discovering more and more of what this amazing city has to offer... a must repeat spot for me is this silver pavillion! The calm and serenity that I found in this place is hard to replicate, it's stunning, immersed in nature and green moss, with a paved path that allows you to immerse yourself in the perfectly curated garden. The small lake and its water, the reflections of everything around it dancing on it and the white sand fields surrounding the silver pavillion make it a place I'll never get tired of! Compared to numerous other places in town, I also appreciate that I've never found any crowds here and can just take my time around the area in peace with no rush, no noise and no distraction, if you need a break from the most touristy spots I can't recommend this one enough! Main features and highlights: · Kannon-den (Silver Pavilion): The main two-story wooden temple structure overlooking the lower grounds. · Ginshadan ("Sea of Silver Sand"): A precisely raked white sand garden designed to reflect moonlight. · Kogetsudai ("Moon-Viewing Platform"): A large, cone-shaped mound of white sand sitting next to the pavilion. · Togu-do Hall: A historic building containing the Dojinsai, considered one of the earliest examples of a traditional Japanese tea study room. · Moss Garden & Strolling Path: A hillside garden with ponds, streams, and a walking trail that leads to an elevated viewpoint overlooking the temple and the city of Kyoto. · Philosopher’s Path: A famous stone pedestrian path lined with cherry trees that starts right near the front gate of the temple, especially beautiful in spring when the flowers are in bloom! What about you? Do you have a favourite spot in Kyootoyou always head back to? Where in the world is your most repeated destination? 📍Jisho-ji 2 Ginkaku-ji-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 💴1000¥ 🚌 to reach it by bus take Kyoto City Bus No. 5 or 17 from Kyoto Station to the Ginkakuji-michi or Ginkakuji-mae bus stop, then walk about 5 to 10 minutes. #repeatdestination #kyototrip #photospot #travel2026 #travel #couplestrip #thingstodo #familytravel #myitinerary #japan #kyoto #ginkakuji #mustvisit #japanesegarden

One of my most memorable food experiences in Japan was having a traditional breakfast at a ryokan in Kyoto. It was not just a meal, but a whole experience that made me feel even more connected to Japanese culture. I wanted to enjoy the atmosphere properly, so I put on the traditional robe provided in our room before going downstairs for breakfast. It is usually called a yukata, a light cotton garment similar to a casual kimono. Walking to breakfast dressed like that made the whole morning feel special, almost as if I had stepped into a Japanese movie. ❤️ There was one important detail to remember: breakfast had to be reserved in advance. We also had to arrive at a specific time, so it was not the kind of meal where you could simply come whenever you wanted. But this made the experience feel organized and special. And then the food started arriving! Dish after dish was brought to the table, with so many different little portions and things to try. There was so much variety that it felt as if the breakfast would never end. Every time I thought we had seen everything, another dish appeared. I loved how different this was from an ordinary hotel breakfast buffet. Instead of walking around with a plate, we could sit comfortably and discover each dish as it was served. The presentation was beautiful, and the whole meal felt like a small Japanese food ceremony. The only problem was that there was simply too much food! 😂 No matter how much we tried, finishing everything felt almost impossible. It was delicious, but the number of dishes was impressive. For me, this was one of those experiences that make travelling so memorable. You are not only tasting local food, but also discovering the traditions and little details that make a place unique. Even putting on the robe from our room became part of the memory. If you are staying at a ryokan in Kyoto, I really recommend trying a traditional Japanese breakfast if it is available. Just remember to reserve your time in advance and arrive hungry! Have you ever tried a traditional ryokan breakfast in Japan? Did you manage to finish all the dishes? 😊 #must-tryfood #Kyoto #JapanFood #JapaneseBreakfast #RyokanExperience #JapaneseCulture #JapanTravel #hotdiscussions
