I was just wandering around, and accidentally stumbled in here. Stepping inside, even my breathing seemed to slow down. . The whole mountain is covered in native forest🌳, with a stream winding along the terrain 🏞️. I didn't expect to be able to get this close to nature right in the city. When the sun slants down☀️, everywhere you look is a frame 📸, you don't even need to find an angle to get a great shot ✨ . Looking ahead, the Bay Area's first deep-water surfing experience center will be opening soon🏄‍♂️, plus jungle hiking🥾 and boat rides🚣—you can do it all here. When you're tired of exploring, you can grab a coffee or have dinner; it's so comprehensive~ . Over thirty independent boutique brands will be opening up one after another, plenty to explore at your own pace 🛍️.

The city is filled with pink silk floss trees that look just like cherry blossoms, the rice paddies are rolling in golden waves, and there are very few tourists. But if you rush in without doing your homework, you'll really run into pitfalls that will make you question your life. This guide is based on my 5 trips, mapped out step by step. If you have no sense of direction or just want to be lazy, just copy this itinerary. 📸 What to photograph in Yunfu? Just snap away at these 4 spots 🌾 Luoding Pingtang Rice Paddies & Changgangpo Aqueduct By November, the Pingtang rice paddies have turned into a charming sea of gold. The karst peak landscape and surrounding paddies complement each other, earning the title of "Most Beautiful Farmland in China." The Changgangpo Aqueduct is an excellent subject during the autumn harvest—the scene of golden terraces crisscrossed by the aqueduct creates a perfect blend of human culture and nature. The light is softest between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Wear light-colored clothing, stand on the ridge, and every shot you take will be screen-saver quality. 🌸 Silk Floss Trees along Nanshan River Autumn in Yunfu hides a touch of pink romance. The silk floss trees along the Nanshan River are expected to be in full bloom around November. The pink flowers look like clouds against the blue sky and water. I recommend visiting the waterfront platforms and riverside walkways. When the breeze blows, petals drift onto the river, creating an incredible atmosphere. Plus, it's completely free—you can snap great photos while taking a stroll. ⛩️ Guo'en Temple & Hometown of the Sixth Patriarch This thousand-year-old temple features red walls, dark tiles, and towering ancient trees. It's free from commercial noise, making every step inside feel peaceful. The light and shadows in the ancient tree grove behind the temple are stunning; backlighting makes for great Zen-style photos. I suggest wearing Hanfu or a qipao to match the red lanterns for a special vibe. Note that opening hours are 8:00 AM–11:30 AM and 2:00 PM–5:30 PM. It closes at noon, so plan accordingly. 🏔️ Xinxing Windmill Mountain Rolling alpine meadows dotted with 46 white windmills. In the early morning, a sea of clouds drifts over the mountainside, making the windmills appear and disappear like a fairyland. Just search for "Xinxing Windmill Mountain" (Shuiyuan Mountain) in your navigation app. The main road up is paved and smooth, so regular cars can easily make it. Windmill No. 18 at the summit is the best spot for panoramic views, while Windmill No. 23 has a large lawn perfect for a picnic, where you might even run into some cows wandering slowly by. 🗺️ How to spend 2 days and 1 night? Just copy this route ☀️ Day 1: Xinxing Zen Route Depart from Guangzhou in the morning and drive for about 2 hours and 40 minutes to Xinxing. First, visit Guo'en Temple (free) to experience the thousand-year-old dojo of the Sixth Patriarch, Huineng. Have a farm-style lunch nearby, then head straight to Windmill Mountain in the afternoon. Catch the sunset between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM, when the setting sun casts long silhouettes of the windmills, making the whole mountain landscape gentle and vast. Stay at a homestay at the foot of the mountain in the evening, or stroll through the Zen Town. The 1,800-acre Tang-style architectural complex is free to explore, and when the lanterns light up, the whole street looks like a movie set. 🍂 Day 2: Luoding Pastoral Route Wake up early and head to Pingtang Town. In November, the rice paddies are golden, so walk along the edges to experience rural life. Stop by the Changgangpo Aqueduct at noon. This massive water conservancy project is about 5,200 meters long. The golden rice paddies paired with the super-long aqueduct create a very healing rural vibe. On your way back in the afternoon, you can stop by Shuidong Ancient Village to wander through clusters of Ming and Qing dynasty buildings—it's quiet and great for photos. 🍗 What to eat in Yunfu? Don't just stick to chicken hot pot People in Yunfu really know their chicken. Local free-range chickens roam the mountains and drink spring water, resulting in firm, chewy meat with a rich flavor. "Five-finger peach" poached chicken is a must-try. It's cooked in the residual heat of the broth, keeping the meat tender and juicy, while the broth has a hint of coconut aroma—one sip and you'll feel great. There's also Luoding fermented bean curd chicken, which has the mellow fragrance of fermented beans and a golden, oily sheen. Every bite is that classic "chicken flavor" that Cantonese people love. Don't miss the snacks either. Yaogu roast pork is a Yunfu signature; the skin is crispy and chewy, while the meat inside is tender and juicy. Chadong stuffed tofu hides the gentle flavors of the countryside; after pan-frying or boiling, the sweetness of the tofu blends with the savory filling. Street snacks like bochengci (pancake rolls), youci (fried rice cakes), and xiadui (shrimp fritters) are full of local charm, and you can eat your fill for just a few dollars. 📍 Local favorites: Zhongxing Restaurant, Moshi Chicken Pot in Xinxing County (the one opened by Uncle Mo, who went viral online; the owner is from Xinxing, Yunfu). 🏡 Where to stay comfortably? Homestays in the Zen Town offer great value. Juzhiju Designer Homestay is rated 9.2/10, and Xianting Mandu Homestay is 9.3/10. They are very close to the Sixth Patriarch Ceremony site and within walking distance. Yuelan Muyi Mountain Residence is in Liuzu Town, surrounded by mountains and greenery. The rooms "back onto the mountain and face the valley," featuring private hot spring pools and an infinity pool. Soaking in the bath while watching the twilight fade is incredibly healing. If you're on a budget, there are plenty of homestays in downtown Yunfu for around 100 yuan. They are clean, comfortable, and perfect as a transit stop. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls (the honest truth) 1. Don't come if you don't have a car. Yunfu's attractions are super scattered. The beautiful scenery is hidden in the mountains of different counties, with Xinxing, Luoding, and Yunan separated by dozens of kilometers. Public transport is basically not an option. 2. Be sure to bring a windbreaker for the mountains. There's a large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains. Even in August, it can drop to 22°C at night, and it's even colder in October–November, so a light jacket is a necessity. 3. Guo'en Temple closes at noon. Opening hours are 8:00 AM–11:30 AM and 2:00 PM–5:30 PM. It's closed at noon, so keep this in mind when planning your itinerary. 4. Protect yourself from mosquitoes. Places like Tiantou Mountain and Windmill Mountain have lots of bugs, so spray plenty of repellent. 5. Rice paddy views during harvest season depend on the weather. The golden color of the paddies depends on the weather and harvest time. Don't set your expectations too high; keeping an open mind makes it easier to encounter pleasant surprises. 6. Drive slowly on gravel sections on the mountain. There is a short stretch of gravel road near the top of Windmill Mountain. Regular cars can pass, but you must go slowly. 7. Bring documents for free admission. Children under 1.2 meters, seniors over 65, and military personnel can get free admission with valid ID. If you forget your documents, you lose the discount. 🎒 Travel tips · Best time: October–December, when the weather is cool and suitable for outdoor activities · Transportation: Self-driving is most convenient; it takes about 2.5–3 hours from Guangzhou/Shenzhen · High-speed rail: About 1 hour and 10 minutes from Guangzhou South Station to Yunfu East Station, second-class seat is 51 yuan · Outfit suggestions: Light or earth-toned clothing matches well with rice paddies and ancient temples, making for better photos · Golden hours for photography: 5:00 AM–6:30 AM for the sea of clouds and sunrise, 5:30 PM–6:30 PM for sunset Yunfu's beauty is the kind that heals you quietly. No crowded crowds, no commercial traps—just mountain breezes, rice paddies, ancient temples, and a bowl of hot chicken soup. Take advantage of the best season from October–November and go. You'll definitely want to come back. 💚

Luoding Changgaopo Aqueduct 🌟 Niche attraction recommendation: Located 21 meters southwest of the Changgaopo Party Member Education Base in Shengjiang Town, Luoding City, Yunfu City, Guangdong Province, this is a unique architectural marvel! This aqueduct is 672 meters long and 48 meters high. It uses a bidirectional cable-stayed structure and is the world's longest and largest-span steel truss arch bridge. 🌈 Highlights: This aqueduct attracts countless visitors with its exquisite craftsmanship and spectacular scale. Standing on the bridge, you can overlook the magnificent scenery of the entire area and experience the wonders of nature. 🏞️ Travel tips: If you love taking photos and exploring lesser-known attractions, this spot is an absolute must-visit! We recommend visiting on a sunny morning or evening so you can capture stunning photos! 🚗 Transportation: From downtown Luoding, drive east along National Highway G324 for about 10 kilometers to reach the scenic area. If you are driving, you can use a navigation app and search for "Changgaopo Aqueduct".

Truly amazed by Guangdong's landscapes! I always thought that if you wanted to see vast alpine meadows and grasslands in the clouds, you had to travel all the way to Xinjiang or Inner Mongolia. I never expected that Bapaishan in Luoding, Yunfu, would hide the same healing scenery! No admission fees, no commercialization, and no traps—this is the ultimate weekend getaway in the Pearl River Delta. It's a hidden gem with few crowds, but the scenery is absolutely god-tier 😭 As a severely underrated hiking secret in western Guangdong, Bapaishan consists of eight continuous green mountains. At an altitude of 1,080 meters, its most unique feature is that it spans three cities (Yunfu, Maoming, and Yangjiang). A boundary marker at the summit allows you to experience standing in three cities at once—the atmosphere is incredible. Unlike steep and rugged mountains, this area is dominated by gentle ridge meadows. The difficulty is beginner-friendly, making it perfect for novices and family-friendly light hikes. You don't need professional gear to easily unlock these grasslands in the clouds! 🌿 Immersive check-in | Every spot is pristine scenery Three-City Boundary Marker (Must-visit) The core landmark at the summit! Established in 1992, the boundary marker stands quietly at the top. Overlooking the endless mountains from here, the view is completely unobstructed. When the weather is clear, you can take in the mountain scenery of all three cities. It's super meaningful for photos and is a unique romance exclusive to Bapaishan. Alpine Meadow in the Clouds A magical lawn dubbed the "Little Ili of Guangdong" by hikers! The entire ridge is covered in soft green grass, and the terrain is open and gentle. Herds of cattle and sheep graze freely, and the wind makes the grass ripple in layers. With blue skies and white clouds paired with the healing wilderness, every shot is a blockbuster—no filters needed. Unlock different scenery in different seasons: in March–April, the mountains are covered in blooming rhododendrons; in autumn and winter, the grass turns golden, creating a full atmosphere. Mountain Forest and Strange Rocks The hike passes through the tranquil "Lovers' Forest" of pine trees, which is dense with shade and a great place to rest halfway. The mountains are scattered with natural, uniquely shaped rocks like the "Turtle Stone" and "Pillar Touching the Sky." There are surprises along the entire hike, so you won't feel bored. 🚶 2 tested routes | Beginners can copy directly (new route differences added) ▫️ Beginner Leisure Route (Recommended) Start hiking from the Chuanbu Town No. 2 Power Station. The road conditions are flat and clear, the ascent is gentle, and there is plenty of shade with little exposure to the sun. You can reach the summit in about 1.5 hours. It's mainly for relaxed sightseeing and taking photos—even zero-experience hikers can handle it. ▫️ Advanced Reverse Loop (For hikers) The counter-clockwise loop from the Zhinv Temple is slightly longer. You need to cross several mountain peaks, covering about 6 km in total. It takes 3–4 hours round trip with a cumulative ascent of 500 meters. It's suitable for those who want a light workout and an immersive hiking experience. 🌌 Niche hidden gameplay | Camping to watch the starry sky and sunrise There is no artificial light pollution on the mountain, and the ecology is 100% pristine! For those with enough time, you can bring a lightweight tent and camp at the summit. Watch the sunset paint the sky red in the evening, gaze at the starry sky late at night, and wait for the sunrise and sea of clouds in the morning. Far from the hustle and bustle of the city, it heals all fatigue—the experience is absolutely top-notch. 💡 Heartfelt tips to avoid pitfalls (exclusively added) 1. Completely free. No spending traps. The entire mountain has no admission fees, no sightseeing shuttles, and no paid projects—it's a purely natural, pristine secret spot. But a key reminder: there are no convenience stores or supply points along the way. You must bring your own drinking water, dry food, tissues, and mosquito repellent in advance. 2. Traffic and parking tips. Driving is preferred as public transport is extremely inconvenient. Navigate to "Luoding Bapaishan No. 2 Power Station." There is a free parking lot at the foot of the mountain. The last 2 km of mountain road is narrow and single-lane, making it impossible for cars to pass each other. Drive slowly and be careful when passing. Ordinary family cars can reach the foot of the mountain; no off-road vehicle is needed. 3. Clothing & road conditions. The mountain roads are mostly dirt and gravel. It is very easy to get muddy and slippery after rain, so you must wear non-slip sports shoes or hiking shoes! The summit is open and very windy. Even on a sunny midsummer day, the temperature difference between morning and evening is significant, so be sure to bring a thin windbreaker. 4. Best time to visit. The best time to visit is March–April to enjoy the sea of rhododendrons, and October–November for crisp autumn weather and a high probability of seeing a sea of clouds. It is strictly forbidden to go up the mountain during the rainy season or heavy rain, as the mountain roads are slippery and dangerous, and it is very easy to get foggy and lost. 5. Core tips for beginners. Mobile phone signals are weak or non-existent in most areas of the mountain! Be sure to download offline maps before hiking. Do not deviate from the main road or enter unmanned dense forests to avoid getting lost. 6. Leave No Trace. The pristine meadow ecosystem is fragile. Please do not trample on vegetation, pick flowers, or climb trees. Take all your trash with you to protect this hidden gem. ✨ Real travel reflections Compared to many internet-famous hiking spots in Guangdong, the most precious thing about Bapaishan is its purity and relaxation. There are no noisy crowds of tourists, no commercial shops hawking goods—only green mountains, meadows, cattle, sheep, and a clear breeze. No need to rush, no need to deliberately check in. Just walk slowly along the ridge, overlook the vast wilderness, and let all your anxiety be healed. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city on the weekend and are looking for a free, uncrowded, and beautiful hidden gem, just go to Bapaishan in Luoding!

This triangular route in Luoding is absolutely amazing! Visit three spots in one day—easy, efficient, and perfect for your Mid-Autumn Festival or National Day trip! ✨ 📍Itinerary: Pingtang Julong Cave → Luoding Wenta Pagoda → Former Residence of Cai Tingkai. The whole trip is by car. The three spots form a triangle, with less than a 30-minute drive between each. You'll walk just over 10,000 steps in a day, so it's not tiring at all. ⏰Timing: Arrive at Julong Cave before 9:00 AM for fewer crowds and better lighting. Spend about 40 minutes exploring. Head to the city center at noon to see the Wenta Pagoda and have lunch nearby. Spend 1.5 hours in the afternoon visiting the former residence, then relax by Jinyin Lake. 🚗Getting there: Driving is recommended. Start from Luoding city center, go to Pingtang Town first (about 20 minutes), return to the city center, and finally head to the former residence (about 25 minutes). The roads are good and parking is convenient. 📷Attraction highlights: 1️⃣ Julong Cave: Hidden at the foot of the karst peaks, the entrance is small, but the interior is a world of its own. Don't miss the Dragon Palace stone curtains, which look like hanging palace drapes, and the stalagmites that resemble a dragon throne. The boardwalk is flat and easy to walk on. Don't rush off after exiting the cave; right outside is the best viewing platform for the Pingtang karst peaks. The rice paddies and peaks look like a giant bonsai landscape—perfect for photos. 2️⃣ Luoding Wenta Pagoda: A Ming Dynasty brick pagoda. It stands out from a distance, and the brickwork is solid up close. Inside, there's a spiral staircase with windows on every level. I recommend climbing to the 3rd floor to see the bend in the Longjiang River, and the 6th floor for a bird's-eye view of the old town. The iron spire on top is said to weigh 7 tons—look up to appreciate the wisdom of ancient craftsmen. The banyan tree path around the pagoda is great for cooling off. Only a section of the old city wall remains nearby, where old bricks and tree roots are intertwined—it makes for very textured photos. 3️⃣ Former Residence of Cai Tingkai: The home of the famous anti-Japanese general. The architectural details are worth savoring, with the original gray and ceramic sculptures preserved. You can climb to the top of the watchtower in the backyard, where you can catch a glimpse of Jinyin Lake from the windows. There are many old photos and artifacts inside the residence, so take your time. Afterward, stop by Jinyin Lake on your way out. The water is clear, reflecting the mountains—sitting on a rock to rest is incredibly refreshing. 💡Tips: Expect large crowds during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, so check opening hours in advance. It's cool inside Julong Cave, so bring a light jacket. The Wenta Pagoda is free, but be careful of the steep steps when climbing.

Yunfu is worth visiting. September–October is recommended—just go for it!✨ A hidden gem in Guangdong that is severely underrated. Avoid the crowds, enjoy landscapes, caves, and Zen-like ancient villages. The temperature from September to October is comfortable, with crisp autumn air and less rain. It is perfect for a slow-paced short trip. Prices are low, there are few tourists, and you won't have to deal with crowds. If you want to go, save this comprehensive guide. 📅 3-day, 2-night itinerary suggestion Day 1: Yuncheng District | Billion-year-old cave + old street vibes In the morning, visit Panlong Cave, a 4A scenic spot and one of the world's 3 major stone flower caves. It is a karst wonder formed 170 million years ago, with iconic, unique, and crystal-clear gem flowers. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 18°C. The ground is slippery, so remember to wear non-slip shoes. The tour takes about 1.5 hours. On the way, visit the Yunfu Museum for free to learn about the stone capital culture. For lunch, have stone-ground rice noodle rolls in the old town. They are thin and smooth, served with pork organ porridge—a classic local breakfast. In the afternoon, go to Shuidong Ancient Village. It is free! This is the first village of Lingnan Neo-Confucianism, with a history of over 600 years. It features wok-ear houses, bluestone alleys, and the Cheng Ancestral Hall, which is full of detailed wood and stone carvings. It is not very commercialized, making it perfect for quiet photos and walks. In the evening, take a walk around Panlong Lake, where the water surrounds green mountains. At night, explore the arcade buildings on East-West Street to experience the small-town night view, where there are many street snacks. Stay in Yuncheng District for convenient dining and transportation. Day 2: Xinxing County | Zen temples + high-mountain tea gardens In the morning, visit Guo'en Temple. It is free! This is the ancestral home where Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, was born and passed away. It is the first sacred site in Lingnan, featuring thousand-year-old lychee trees, red walls, and ancient trees. It is quiet and serene. Remember to dress appropriately and do not take photos of the Buddha statues casually. For lunch, you must try Xinxing eel rice. The rice absorbs the eel oil, creating a crispy, fragrant crust, and it is served with mountain vegetables. In the afternoon, visit Xiangwo Mountain Ecological Park. It has 10,000 acres of high-mountain tea gardens. The autumn breeze blowing through the tea sea is very healing. You can hike, enjoy the views, and get some fresh air. In the evening, soak in the natural medicinal hot springs to wash away the fatigue of the trip. Stay in Xinxing County or a hot spring homestay. Day 3: Two leisure options, choose as needed Option A: Tianlu Mountain Resort, the highest peak in central-southern Guangdong. It is easy to encounter a sea of clouds in September–October. It has a glass bridge and Meixi Town. Choose this if you like outdoor activities. Option B: Luoding direction, Luoding Windmill Mountain. Drive up the mountain to see the white windmills at the summit. In autumn, the sunrise, sea of clouds, and starry sky are beautiful. There are many curves on the mountain road, so drive carefully. In the afternoon, buy souvenirs and prepare for your return. 🍜 Must-eat food list in Yunfu ✅ Luoding wrinkled fish tofu: An intangible cultural heritage food made by hand-beating dace. The skin is thin and light, absorbing the soup. It is delicious in hot pot or soup. ✅ Luoding fermented bean curd chicken: Local free-range chicken braised with traditional fermented bean curd. It is rich in flavor and tender, a classic dish in western Guangdong. ✅ Stone-ground Hekou rice noodle rolls: A Yunfu signature. They are as thin as cicada wings and rich in rice fragrance. A top choice for breakfast. ✅ Yunan lei cha porridge: A specialty healthy porridge made by grinding peanuts, tea leaves, and ginger. It has a rich tea aroma and a unique texture. ✅ Xinxing guozheng zong: Sticky rice, mung beans, and pork belly wrapped in winter leaves. It is solid and chewy. Also, try Gaocun tofu, five-finger peach chicken soup, and local mountain snails; they are all excellent. For souvenirs, you can bring back Xiangwo tea, Tuodong dried bean curd sticks, and Xinxing preserved plums. ⚠️ Travel tips 1. Attractions in Yunfu are spread across different districts and counties and are far apart. Self-driving is preferred. You can also rent a car after arriving at Yunfu East Station by high-speed rail. County buses are infrequent and stop running early, so public transport is not recommended for the entire trip. Luoding Windmill Mountain has many curves; drive carefully and do not go up the mountain in foggy weather. 2. It is recommended to buy tickets for Panlong Cave and Tianlu Mountain online in advance for better prices. Guo'en Temple is free; do not buy incense or trinkets from pushy vendors at the temple entrance. 3. There is a large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains. Bring a light jacket for September–October. Be sure to bring mosquito repellent for outdoor activities. The caves and mountain trails are slippery, so wear non-slip sports shoes throughout the trip. Carry an umbrella, as the weather in the mountains is changeable. 4. Try to eat at old local shops in the county town. Restaurants around scenic spots are often overpriced and have average taste. Buy local specialties from reputable shops and do not trust roadside vendors. 5. Do not take wild paths when hiking. Pay attention to park notices and follow fire safety regulations. 💛 Final thoughts Yunfu does not have the hustle and bustle of viral tourist cities. The autumn atmosphere in September–October is just right. You can see the billion-year-old karst cave, walk through ancient temples, and eat authentic western Guangdong farm food. It is perfect for those who want to escape the city and relax at a slow pace. There is no need to rush; just slowly experience the small town's landscape and local life. Plan your short trip now.

Still squeezing into crowded tourist spots and stuck in highway traffic for the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday? I’ve discovered a hidden gem for "reverse travel" near the Pearl River Delta: Luoding 🚗 No traffic jams, no lines, and an incredible experience! [📍 One-day road trip route (departing from the Pearl River Delta)] Depart from the Pearl River Delta at 8:00 AM; the navigation shows a total travel time of 2 hours and 40 minutes. I didn't encounter any traffic jams along the way, and getting off the highway into downtown Luoding was super smooth—a huge plus. The drive between each spot is under 30 minutes, so the itinerary is packed but not tiring at all! [📸 Must-visit spots] ✅ Former Residence of Cai Tingkai It takes about half an hour to drive there from the city center, and you can see the peaks in the distance along the way—the scenery is amazing. The residence features a three-hall main house with side annexes, and two watchtowers stand tall at the back. The courtyard is neatly paved with bluestone slabs; I never expected a rural residence to be so grand. While walking around, I met a local gentleman who shared stories about how the watchtowers were used to defend against bandits back in the day—it was so immersive. After leaving, I drove halfway around Jinyin Lake. The lake surface was sparkling, and the small island with green trees made for a quiet and healing scene. Every photo I took turned out great. ✅ Pingtang Town Peak Forest + Julong Cave The light around 3:00–4:00 PM is perfect for photographing the peaks, with shadows cast on the rice paddies creating stunning contrast. The few solitary trees standing in the middle of the rice fields are perfect for photos. Julong Cave is right on the edge of the peak forest. The stalactites inside are well-preserved, the "Julong Hall" is incredibly spacious, and the stalagmites and stone curtains are layered beautifully. The lighting is just right—not tacky at all. It takes about an hour to walk through the cave, and I came out just in time for the sunset—the timing was perfect. ✅ Luoding Wenta Make sure to arrive before sunset! The setting sun dyes the pagoda a warm orange; the ancient pagoda against the evening glow is guaranteed to be the centerpiece of your social media feed. There are arched windows on every level of the pagoda, and the view from each height is completely different. From the top level, you can see the sun sinking behind the distant mountains, with the river reflecting the afterglow—it’s breathtakingly beautiful. The ancient city wall next to the pagoda is even more atmospheric in the twilight, with the moss on the blue bricks glowing under the setting sun—the vibe is immaculate. Before heading back, I took a detour to Jinyin Lake to see the Mid-Autumn moon. The full moon hung above the lake, and it was so quiet that only the sound of the wind remained—it was so healing.

Don't want to deal with the Mid-Autumn Festival crowds? Come to Luoding, Guangdong, to cover 3 routes in 1 day. It's a self-drive trip with no backtracking, only 10,000 steps, and it's a breeze! 🥳 This triangular route includes Julong Cave in the morning, Wenta (Literary Pagoda) at noon, the former residence in the afternoon, and Jinyin Lake along the way. The entire drive is under 30 minutes, making it perfect for a short trip itinerary! 📍 Route Overview: Julong Cave → Wenta → Former Residence of Cai Tingkai → Jinyin Lake, a loop with no backtracking. We recommend arriving at Julong Cave by 8:30 AM to avoid the crowds. 📸 Must-Visit Spots 1. Julong Cave: Hidden at the foot of the Pingtang Peak Forest, the light is soft in the morning, and it's less crowded. The "Dragon Palace" scenery inside the cave is incredible. Large stone curtains hang from the cave ceiling like palace drapes, and stalagmites are scattered like dragon thrones and altars, making it feel like you've stumbled into a dragon palace. The boardwalk is flat, and you can finish the walk in 40 minutes without getting tired. Outside the cave entrance is the best viewing platform for the Pingtang Peak Forest, where rice paddies spread out and peaks are scattered like a giant bonsai. Every photo is a masterpiece. Be sure to arrive early to enjoy the place all to yourself! 2. Luoding Wenta: A Ming Dynasty brick pagoda and a landmark by the river. The spire towers high when viewed from afar. Up close, the pagoda is sturdy, with a spiral staircase and observation windows on each floor. The 3rd floor faces the bend of the Longjiang River, and the 6th floor offers a panoramic view of the old town. The iron spire on the top floor weighs 7 tons, and looking up, you'll be amazed by the wisdom of the ancients. The banyan tree path under the pagoda is cool, and nearby are remnants of the ancient city wall, where old bricks and tree roots intertwine, perfect for atmospheric photos. Grab lunch in the city. You must try the Luoding fish tofu—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Many small shops fry it fresh, and you can even buy some as souvenirs. 3. Former Residence of Cai Tingkai: A famous anti-Japanese general and commander of the 19th Route Army who led the Battle of Shanghai. The residence displays many old photos and artifacts, and the gray and ceramic sculptures on the building are well-preserved, with fascinating details. You can climb the watchtower in the backyard, and the view of a corner of Jinyin Lake from the window is beautiful. Allow 1.5 hours to stroll around and soak in the history. 4. Jinyin Lake: Stop by the lake on your way; the water is clear and reflects the mountains. Sit on a rock to rest, let your fatigue melt away, and end your trip on a perfect note. 🚗 Transportation: Self-drive the whole way. The longest drive between attractions is 30 minutes. The roads are good, parking is easy, and it's beginner-friendly. 💡 Practical Tips: It's slippery inside Julong Cave, so wear non-slip shoes. The stairs to the top of Wenta are narrow and steep, so elderly people and children should proceed with caution. The former residence is free, but check the opening hours in advance to avoid a wasted trip.

I scoured the internet and couldn't find many guides for Luoding, so I decided to take a chance and head there during the Mid-Autumn Festival to beat the crowds. After I got back, I couldn't help but exclaim: This small city is seriously underrated! 😭 With three spots offering three completely different vibes, I was able to hit them all in one day for an incredible experience! [📍 Wild Nature Route] The combination of karst peaks and rice paddies in Pingtang Town is a rare sight in Guangdong. You don't need to travel all the way to Guangxi or Guizhou; you can see the perfect blend of karst landscapes and agricultural scenery right here in Luoding. You can see farmers busy harvesting in the rice paddies, and the rustling sound of sickles cutting through the rice is incredibly soothing. Walking along the field paths to the foot of the peaks, you'll see rock walls covered in vines and shrubs growing from the crevices—it's all raw, untamed beauty. Julong Cave, right next to the peaks, is also worth a visit. The stalactites are still growing, and you can see water dripping from the tips of the stalagmites. Standing in front of stones that take hundreds of years to grow just one centimeter, you really feel how small humanity is. [📜 Ancient Culture & History] The Luoding Wenta (Literary Pagoda) is an ancient structure that will definitely make you look back again and again; I walked around it twice and still couldn't get enough. Despite over 400 years of weathering, the pagoda remains rock-solid. The angle of the eaves changes on every level, and the pointed roof is incredibly sleek. When I was there, I ran into an elderly man sketching; he captured the silhouette of the pagoda in his watercolor painting perfectly. The ancient city wall nearby isn't long, but you can still make out the "Hongwu" inscriptions on the bricks. Touching the 600-year-old stones with my fingertips, the cold, rough texture was truly striking. [🔥 Tracing the Hero's Hometown] The former residence of Cai Tingkai has a rugged, tough vibe—with its watchtowers, high walls, and thick doors, it looks exactly like a fortress from turbulent times. Yet, the house hides many intimate details: flowers in the courtyard, wood carvings under the corridors, and patterns on the window lattices. The blend of hard architecture and soft traces of daily life is just right. Just outside the residence is Jinyin Lake. The water is vast and calm; it's hard to imagine that such a peaceful land produced such an iron-willed general. After a day of exploring, with nature, history, and culture constantly switching, my mind was blown the whole time. A hidden gem of a small city like Luoding, which hasn't been overdeveloped, is definitely worth more than one visit. I'll be back for a second trip in a different season!

Historical background Liantan Zhanggong Temple is located in Liantan Town, Yunan County, Yunfu City, Guangdong Province. It was built in 1578 (the 6th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty) to commemorate Zhang Yuanxun, a Ming Dynasty Guangdong regional commander. It underwent multiple renovations and expansions during the Qing Dynasty, and the existing structure was primarily rebuilt in 1877 (the 3rd year of the Guangxu reign). Zhang Yuanxun, courtesy name Shichen, was a native of Taiping, Zhejiang (present-day Wenling County). He was promoted to Guangdong regional commander for his meritorious service in suppressing pirates under General Qi Jiguang. In the mid-Ming Dynasty, a rebellion broke out in the Luopang region (within the jurisdiction of present-day Yunfu) and lasted for decades. In 1576 (the 4th year of the Wanli reign), Zhang Yuanxun was ordered to lead troops to suppress the rebellion. He was later bestowed the title of "General Protecting the Country and Sheltering the People" by the Wanli Emperor and honored for "founding the three counties." This led the Ming court to establish 3 administrative divisions in Western Guangdong—Luoding Prefecture, Dong'an County, and Xining County—collectively known as "Sanluo," which laid the foundation for the current layout of Yunfu City. Grateful for his achievements, the local people revered him as a deity and built Zhanggong Temple to worship him, ensuring its popularity for hundreds of years. The worship of Zhanggong has become a representative local folk belief in Western Guangdong. Every year, during the first, eighth, and ninth lunar months, local folk temple fairs are held. These fairs have a widespread influence in the Nanjiang River basin, and the Zhanggong Temple Fair has been listed as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage. 🏡 Architectural highlights Liantan Zhanggong Temple faces north. It consists of a front hall, a central worship pavilion, a rear main hall, and side halls and corridors on both sides. The layout is balanced and symmetrical, with a square floor plan. In front of the temple gate, 2 granite pillars support the structure, decorated with "flying heads" (ornamental brackets) and covered with green glazed tiles. The main hall is supported by 6 round ironwood pillars, featuring column bases and dougong (bracket sets) on top. The pillars are arranged in neat rows, creating exceptionally spacious central and side bays. The building is adorned with painted beams and carved rafters, making it magnificent and grand. The structural components of the entire building, such as the tuofeng (camel-hump-shaped brackets), dougong, and eaves boards, all possess strong local characteristics and styles of Western Guangdong. 📜 Cultural heritage status As an ancient temple that integrates the architectural features of Western Guangdong with local folk beliefs, Liantan Zhanggong Temple is also the former site of the Liantan Peasant Association and is currently a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Heritage Conservation Unit. 🚗 Travel guide Location: Next to Liantan Middle School, Chengdong Road, Liantan Town, Yunan County, Yunfu City, Guangdong Province Admission: Free Transportation: Navigate to "Former Site of Liantan Peasant Association" to reach the destination directly

The Ming-style stone archway is simple and solemn, making it the perfect first photo spot in the ancient village. 2️⃣ Lin Ancestral Hall The core building of the ancient village, built in the Qing Dynasty. It features exquisite wood carvings, and the paintings on the beams and columns are still clearly visible. Local elders often sit and chat inside the ancestral hall, offering a glimpse into authentic village life. 3️⃣ Pot-ear house complex The iconic architecture of Lanzhai! Pot-ear houses are named for the pot-ear shape at both ends of the roof and are representative of traditional Lingnan residences. The clusters of pot-ear houses are arranged in an orderly manner, with moss-covered blue brick walls that exude historical charm. 4️⃣ Ancient wells and alleys The village preserves several ancient wells and crisscrossing stone-paved alleys. Walking on the bluestone paths with mottled old walls on both sides makes time feel as if it has stood still. 5️⃣ Observation deck There is an observation deck on the hillside behind the village where you can overlook the entire ancient village. The rolling roofs of the pot-ear houses make this the best spot to photograph the full view of the village.   📸 Best photo spots Spot 1: Pot-ear house courtyard Find a well-preserved pot-ear house and take a shot looking up from the center of the courtyard. The roofline creates a symmetrical composition with excellent light and shadow effects. Spot 2: Deep alleys Choose a straight ancient alley and use perspective to capture a sense of depth. You can have a person stand in the middle of the alley, with the old walls on both sides forming a natural frame. Spot 3: Panoramic view from the observation deck Climb to the observation deck at dusk. The ancient village under the sunset with curling smoke, and the outlines of the pot-ear houses highlighted by golden light, make this the golden hour for great photos. Pair it with a bucket of well water or some wild grass to capture a sense of peaceful, timeless beauty.   🍜 Food recommendations Must-try local specialties Luoding fish tofu: A Yunfu intangible cultural heritage food, tender and delicious Crepe fish tofu: Unique texture, a local specialty Spring water tofu: Made with mountain spring water from the ancient village, rich in bean flavor Farm-raised free-range chicken: Free-range chicken with firm meat There are several farm-style restaurants in the village with an average cost of about CNY 40–60 per person, offering great value.   🏨 Accommodation advice Day trip The ancient village is only 1.5 hours from downtown Yunfu. It is recommended to stay in downtown Yunfu, where there are more hotel options and better facilities. You can experience the quiet ancient village in the early morning without tourists, which is suitable for photography enthusiasts and deep-travel travelers.   💡 Practical tips The ancient village is currently open for free, no admission ticket required Some alleys in the village are narrow, so it is recommended to wear comfortable flat shoes There are many mosquitoes in summer, so be prepared with mosquito repellent Respect the lives of local residents and keep quiet when taking photos There are few convenience stores in the village, so it is recommended to bring your own drinking water If you want to take photos of local culture, you can communicate with the villagers in advance; they are very hospitable   ⭐ Trip summary Lanzhai Ancient Village is not overly commercialized and retains the original appearance of a Lingnan ancient village. I found a hidden gem for my Mid-Autumn Festival reverse trip! Skip the crowds. Luoding is a seriously underrated small city! Three attractions, three vibes. In one day, you can experience wild nature, deep historical charm, and heroic spirit. Just copy this itinerary👇 📍Itinerary (one-day trip) Pingtang Town Karst Peak Rice Paddies > Julong Cave > Luoding Wenta (Literary Tower) & Ancient City Wall > Former Residence of Cai Tingkai > Jinyin Lake 📷Must-visit photo spots (with tips) 1. Pingtang Peak Forest Rice Paddies: Karst peaks + golden rice paddies, a rare sight in Guangdong! During the autumn harvest, farmers bend over to harvest, and the rustling sound of sickles cutting rice is super healing. Walking on the ridges with the peaks as a background, every shot is a healing masterpiece. I recommend early morning or evening for soft light, and you might even capture the smoke from cooking fires. 2. Julong Cave: The stalactites inside are still growing. Water drips along the tips of the stalagmites, taking hundreds of years to grow just 1 cm, and standing in front of them makes you feel small. Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the mystery, and remember to wear non-slip shoes. 3. Luoding Wenta (Literary Tower): A 400-year-old tower. Walk around it, and you'll see traces of weathering from every angle. Shoot from below or use puddles to capture reflections for a classic, ancient vibe. The adjacent ancient city wall features bricks with Hongwu inscriptions. Touching the 600-year-old stones, they feel cold and rough. If you're lucky, you might even meet an artist sketching. 4. Former Residence of Cai Tingkai: A mix of sturdy watchtowers and daily life details. The courtyard flowers, trees, and wood-carved window lattices create a cultural atmosphere. Right outside the residence is Jinyin Lake. The lake is wide and calm, perfect for capturing reflections and sunsets. Imagine the General gazing out from here.

Worried about getting stuck in traffic or fighting crowds at tourist spots during the Mid-Autumn Festival? Take my advice! Head to Luoding, just a 2h 40m drive from the Pearl River Delta. This "reverse travel" experience was so good, it’s officially my new favorite.🚗 The entire drive was smooth, with zero traffic jams. Even getting off the highway and into the city center was incredibly easy! [📍 One-Day Road Trip Itinerary] Depart from the Pearl River Delta at 8:00 AM. First stop: Cai Tingkai's Former Residence, about a 30-minute drive from the city center. You can catch glimpses of the distant karst peaks along the way—the scenery is so soothing. The residence features a three-hall main structure with side wings, two towering watchtowers in the back, and a very orderly bluestone courtyard. There was hardly anyone there, so no need to worry about crowds. I even met a local gentleman who shared interesting stories about how the watchtowers were used to defend against bandits. After leaving the residence, drive halfway around Jinyin Lake. The lake surface sparkles, and the small island with its lush trees makes for a quiet, picturesque scene. It’s completely free of noisy crowds, making it the perfect place to clear your mind. Just pull over and snap a few photos—everything looks great. Second stop: The karst peaks in Pingtang Town. The light around 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM is absolutely perfect! The shadows of the peaks fall across the rice paddies, creating stunning contrast. A few solitary trees stand in the middle of the fields—the photos look like ready-made wallpapers. Right next to the peaks is Julong Cave. The stalactites inside are incredibly well-preserved. The "Julong Hall" is massive, filled with layers of stalagmites and stone curtains. The lighting is tasteful and elegant. It takes about 1 hour to walk through, and you'll come out just in time for sunset. Third stop: Time your arrival at the Luoding Wen Tower for sunset. I have to pat myself on the back for this timing! The setting sun paints the tower in warm orange hues. An ancient tower against the evening glow is guaranteed to be the highlight of your social media feed. Each level of the tower has arched windows, offering different views from every height. From the top level, you can watch the sun dip behind the distant mountains, with the river reflecting the afterglow—it’s incredibly atmospheric. The ancient city wall next to the tower also has so much character in the twilight, with the moss on the blue bricks glowing under the setting sun. Before heading back, I made a special detour to Jinyin Lake to see the Mid-Autumn moon. The round, bright moon hung over the lake, and the surroundings were so quiet that only the wind could be heard. It was so healing. The day was packed but not tiring at all. The drive between each spot was less than 30 minutes, making for a very comfortable pace.

Skip the crowded tourist spots this Mid-Autumn! I took a gamble on "reverse travel" to Luoding and was absolutely blown away 🤯 It’s a 2.5-hour drive via highway from the Pearl River Delta. Leave early on the Mid-Autumn Festival for smooth traffic and beat 90% of the crowds! You can see everything in 1 day without rushing, and still make it back to the Pearl River Delta in time for moon viewing at home. It’s just perfect! 🏮✨ 📍Route plan (no backtracking): Pingtang Peak Forest > Julong Cave > Luoding Wenta > Cai Tingkai Former Residence > Jinyin Lake The route is straightforward with no detours. It’s a relaxed pace perfect for a day trip, and even new drivers can handle it easily~ 📷Must-visit spots ✨Pingtang Peak Forest I was stunned by the karst peaks the moment I parked! ⛰️ Small hills rise abruptly from the ground, set against golden rice fields that stretch to the horizon. With the wind rippling through the rice, I can't believe Guangdong has such an incredible rural landscape! Every photo looks like a desktop wallpaper—no filters needed at all. 🌾 A few minutes' walk inside is Julong Cave, filled with stalactites of all shapes and sizes, including a "Dragon Bed" that looks just like a dragon's head. It’s nice and cool inside—like stepping into a natural air-conditioned room after being out in the sun~ ❄️ ✨Luoding Wenta This is truly the most complete Ming Dynasty pagoda in Guangdong 🏯. The craftsmanship of this octagonal, 7-story brick pagoda is incredibly detailed—it’s 10 times more impressive in person than in photos! The stairs to climb the pagoda are narrow and steep, but the moment you reach the top and overlook the great bend of the Longjiang River, it’s all worth it! In the sunset, the river looks like a shimmering golden ribbon 🌅. There are 64 copper bells hanging from the eaves that tinkle in the wind, full of ancient charm. There are also ruins of an old city wall nearby. It’s super relaxing to stroll along the river in the evening, and you can take some great retro photos 📸. ✨Cai Tingkai Former Residence + Jinyin Lake The former residence of the anti-Japanese general Cai Tingkai is larger than expected 🏛️. It features a 3-courtyard layout with pavilions and corridors, and the 2 watchtowers at the back, originally built for defense against bandits, are particularly eye-catching—the sense of history is palpable! The large pond in front of the house reflects the forest on the hill behind it. After exploring, it’s just a few minutes' drive to Jinyin Lake, where the view is incredibly expansive~ 🌊 When the full Mid-Autumn moon rises over the lake 🌕, with nothing but the sound of water and insects, it’s quiet and healing. There’s absolutely none of the noise found at popular tourist spots—this is the right way to spend the holiday!

Luoding Confucian Temple: Red walls and dark tiles reflect the sky, while upturned eaves carry the weight of history. This architectural complex, the most complete Confucian temple remaining in Guangdong, holds the two-thousand-year-old Confucian heritage of Luoding. Walking on the bluestone path, you can almost hear the chanting of scholars from the Ming and Qing dynasties echoing through the halls; touching the mottled palace walls, your fingertips trace the exquisite craftsmanship of Lingnan architecture—the wisdom of artisans hidden within the interlocking dougong brackets, and the cultural legacy carved into the colorful patterns.

The vegetation is lush, and the air is fresh. It is a great place to walk along the lake, enjoy the breeze, and relax. 📝Travel Tips 🚗Transportation tips: Attractions in Luoding are scattered. Self-driving is highly recommended. If departing from the Pearl River Delta, take the Guangkun or Shencen Expressway for a direct route. It takes about 2.5–3 hours from Guangzhou. The road conditions in the city and surrounding mountain areas are smooth, making it easy even for beginners. 🌤️Weather tips: The climate in Western Guangdong is mild. It is best to travel in spring or autumn. Summer can be hot and rainy, so remember to bring sunscreen, an umbrella, and mosquito repellent. The temperature difference between day and night is small, so light and comfortable clothing is sufficient. 🍱Food tips: In addition to the signature rice noodle rolls, fish cakes, and shrimp fritters, you can also try local specialties like Baicheng rice cakes and perilla duck. The old shops in the old streets have the most authentic flavors and are very cost-effective. Avoid the overpriced 'internet-famous' shops. 📸Photography tips: The Confucian Temple and Literary Pagoda are suitable for vintage-style outfits. The rice fields, peak forest, and Jinyin Lake are suitable for fresh, natural-style outfits. The light in the morning is soft, and the photo quality is far better than in the strong light of the afternoon. 💰Budget tips: The overall cost of living in Luoding is affordable. Dining and accommodation costs are low. There are no excessive commercial consumption traps. The pure travel experience is excellent, making it suitable for students and budget-friendly short trips. 👟Packing tips: Most activities involve outdoor mountain areas and walking. Be sure to wear comfortable sports shoes. Avoid high heels or hard-soled shoes to make it easier to walk around and sightsee for long periods.

This route is perfect for combining "event-watching" with "slowing down": spend a relaxing first night in Yunfu city, save Xinxing for the Sixth Patriarch culture and hot springs, and then head to Luoding to catch the dragon boat races and nightlife along the Longjiang River. If you're leaving in late September, just keep an eye on the Luoding event schedule. 🚗 Don't turn your time in Yunfu city into a mad dash. After arriving in the evening, choose a spot along the waterfront for dinner and a stroll, and keep an eye out for announcements about pop-up markets or evening performances. Stay somewhere with convenient parking for your first night so that your drive to Xinxing the next day isn't disrupted by luggage or searching for a parking spot. This part of the trip in Xinxing is best taken at a slower pace. The Sixth Patriarch's Hometown Tourist Resort can serve as your cultural stop for the day; check the opening hours and tour arrangements before you enter. The courtyards, ancient trees, and Lingnan-style rooftops are better enjoyed at a leisurely pace, so we don't recommend cramming several distant attractions into the same afternoon. 🍃 It's best to schedule your hot spring visit for the evening in Xinxing. Soaking after exploring the cultural areas during the day is less tiring and leaves you with more energy for the Luoding activities on the third day. Since hot spring operating hours, entry rules, and reservation requirements can change quickly, confirm these details directly with the property before making your booking. When traveling from Xinxing to Luoding, we recommend making "getting to the river" your only non-negotiable goal for the day. The Luoding Dragon Boat Race series is scheduled for September 25–October 5. In addition to the races, there will be cultural tourism events, evening performances, markets, and intangible cultural heritage exhibitions. Check the official announcements closer to the date to decide which events to attend. 🥁 When watching the races along the Longjiang River, prioritize spots with a clear view and follow the instructions of on-site staff. Bring light rain gear and a reusable water bottle. The most powerful moments of the dragon boat races are usually when the teams start paddling and during the turns, so don't climb over barriers just to get closer to the water. It's best for your group to agree on a meeting point in advance. The Changgangpo Aqueduct is a great spot for the other half of your day in Luoding, offering a contrast to the bustling riverbank. It's all about the linear water conservancy heritage and the scale of the valley. Just wear non-slip shoes and stay away from slippery edges. If there is heavy rain or temporary restrictions, you can skip this part without affecting the main itinerary. 🌦️ The key to this 3-day road trip is to treat "Yunfu night stroll—Xinxing relaxation—Luoding event-watching" as separate experiences. Please double-check the weather, road conditions, parking, hot spring operating hours, and specific dragon boat race times on the day of your departure. If the event schedule changes, you can still enjoy the Sixth Patriarch culture, hot springs, and waterfront night tours, and your itinerary will remain complete. ✨
