All Trip Moments about Nuevalos
A town famous for its monastery
Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Zaragoza (Region)
Nuévalos sits on the banks of the Piedra river, at the end of the La Tranquera reservoir. The limestone cliffs cut by the Piedra River and the vegetation that grows along its banks make this a great spot to see a large number of raptors and rock-dwelling birds. Likewise, in the La Tranquera reservoir and its extensive reed beds, many herons, cormorants and ducks can be seen, depending on the time of year. The reservoir has been developed into a venue for water sports. There is excellent fishing in the reservoir and in parts of the Piedra River.
At the same time, the Monastery of Piedra is one of the most important tourist centers in Aragon. This is a former Cistercian monastery turned hotel with a beautiful park featuring water, rocks and vegetation.

A precedent for revitalizing historic buildings after 1840
Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Zaragoza (Region)
The Monastery of Piedra is located in one of the wildest areas of Aragon. Its history dates back to 1194, when Alonso II the Chaste and his wife Sancha donated a former Arab castle to the monks of Poblet to build a monastery and strengthen the Christian faith in the area. In 1840, Pablo Muntadas Campeny bought the monastery, preserving agricultural and livestock activities there. His son, Juan Federico Muntadas, remodeled the park, creating roads and paths and planting trees. After the Iris Cave was discovered in 1860, it was opened to the public. The first fish farming center in Spain opened in 1867, introducing common trout and Iberian crab to the river. The Centre continues to supply Aragon's rivers with species for repopulation. The result of these actions was the gardens we know today, which were declared an "area of natural beauty" in 1940.
