Ashikaga School, said to be the oldest school in Japan, and Hōō-ji Temple, which has a history dating back to the Kamakura period. Both are tranquil tourist spots where you can feel the history and culture of Ashikaga City. At Ashikaga School, there is a shoin study and garden where warlords are said to have come to study, and time flows quietly. The documents and buildings that convey the spirit of Confucianism are well worth seeing. The neighboring Hōō-ji Temple is a prestigious temple built on the site of the Ashikaga clan's residence, and is impressive for its appearance surrounded by the national treasure main hall, a large ginkgo tree, and a moat. Although it is a tourist spot, the calm atmosphere, which feels like an extension of everyday life, will soothe your mind.
