Palaces, Pavilions, and Painted Dreams — A Day at the Summer Palace

Beijing may be fast-paced and modern, but step into the Summer Palace, and time slows to a graceful walk. Built as an imperial retreat, the Summer Palace feels more like a landscape painting than a tourist site. I entered through the East Palace Gate, and the first thing that struck me was the calm of Kunming Lake, reflecting willow trees and arched stone bridges. It was like nature and architecture were speaking the same quiet language. I spent the morning strolling along the Long Corridor — a covered walkway with over 14,000 colorful paintings. Each beam tells a story: scenes from myths, battles, and ancient poetry. I couldn’t stop looking up. Even the shadows here feel artistic. Next came the climb up Longevity Hill to the Tower of Buddhist Incense. It’s a bit of a workout, but the view is more than worth it — the lake stretching out below, dotted with boats, the city skyline peeking from afar. It’s no wonder emperors escaped here to find peace. Lunch was simple: a steamed bun and warm soy milk from a small teahouse by the lake. Then I took a short boat ride across the water, gliding past the Seventeen-Arch Bridge like a dream. As the sun began to set, golden light brushed the rooftops, and everything glowed — soft, ancient, and timeless. The Summer Palace isn’t just a place to see; it’s a place to breathe. To wander.
