Medieval Magic & Canals: My Solo Adventure in Ghent

#mytraveldiary I just discovered the perfect European city for solo travelers: Ghent, Belgium. With its dramatic medieval architecture, vibrant student energy, and walkable cobblestone streets, it felt like stepping into a living fairy tale—all on my own terms. What is this place all about? Ghent is a stunning port city in Flanders where ancient history meets modern creativity. It’s famous for its beautifully preserved medieval center, picturesque canals, towering Gravensteen Castle, and world-class art. The city buzzes with a youthful, laid-back vibe thanks to its large student population. Why Here? It offers the perfect blend of grandeur and coziness. It’s safe, easy to navigate, and packed with things to do, yet it feels more intimate and less touristy than Bruges. As a solo traveler, you’ll feel welcomed and never run out of hidden corners to explore. My Solo Itinerary: · Day 1: Explored the iconic Gravensteen Castle and walked along the Graslei and Korenlei quays—the most photogenic spot in the city. Visited the stunning St. Bavo’s Cathedral to see the famous Ghent Altarpiece. Ended the day with a locally brewed beer at a cozy brown café. · Day 2: Climbed the Belfry of Ghent for panoramic views. Got lost in the charming Patershol district, browsing vintage shops and stopping for coffee. Took a relaxing boat tour along the canals for a new perspective. Enjoyed Belgian fries from a street stall by the water. Top Tips for Solo Travelers: · Stay Central: Choose a hostel or hotel near the historic center to walk everywhere. · Use the CityCard: The Ghent CityCard offers access to major sights and public transport—great value for solo explorers. · Talk to Locals: Ghent’s residents are friendly. Don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations! · Enjoy Solo Dining: The food scene is incredible—from trendy vegan spots to traditional pubs perfect for people-watching. Ghent was the ideal solo escape—full of culture, charm, and the freedom to wander wherever my curiosity took me. #solotravel #visitgent #belgium #hiddengem #travelalone
