Canals, Castles & Belgian Charm: My Return to Ghent

#mytraveldiary Some cities deserve a second visit—and Ghent is one of them. Even more enchanting the second time around, this medieval Flemish beauty wrapped me in its cobblestone charm, vibrant cultural life, and laid-back atmosphere. Perfect for solo travelers who love history without the crowds. My Solo Itinerary (Revisited): · Morning – Medieval Majesty & Climb: Started at Gravensteen—the impressive Castle of the Counts—and climbed its ramparts for dreamy views over Ghent’s guild houses and canals. Wandered through the Patershol district, a quiet tangle of streets with hidden cafés and antique shops. · Afternoon – Art, Fries & Belgian Beer: Revisited the Ghent Altarpiece at St. Bavo’s Cathedral, then treated myself to crispy Belgian fries with stoofvlees (beef stew) from a local frituur. Enjoyed a sunny moment along the Graslei—the most photogenic spot in the city. · Evening – Lights & Local Vibes: As dusk fell, I experienced the magical illumination of the city’s monuments. Ended the day at a cozy brown café with a locally brewed Gentse Strop beer, chatting with friendly locals and other travelers. Why Ghent Shines for Solos (Again!): · Compact & Walkable: No need for transport—everything is within easy walking distance. · Fewer Tourists: Compared to Bruges, it feels more local and relaxed. · Student Energy: The university keeps the city young, with plenty of affordable eats and cool hangouts. · Easy Day Trips: Hopped on a quick train to Antwerp or Brussels for even more exploration. Ghent remains one of Europe’s most underrated gems—historic yet hip, grand yet grounded. It’s the kind of city you’re happy to return to, especially alone. --- Hashtags: #soloinghent #belgiumagain #ghenttravel #hiddeneurope #medievalwanderer
