University city of Heidelberg - a must-see in the Black Forest region

Many of the buildings are far younger than the city itself due to the period of time when the French razed the city’s (mostly wooden) buildings in a bid to claim the city as its own. Many of its buildings now date to the 18-19th centuries, and some are reputed to be built out of stones from the local Castle’s very ruins. It is a highly affordable place to visit, with 3 star hotels under 60 EUR a night near the train station. From there you can walk into the historical town and up to Heidelberg castle for free.
