This week-long California road trip began with a drive through Kern County and Lone Pine, arriving at Mammoth Lakes in the afternoon on the first day to check into The Westin Monache Resort. The hotel boasts a prime location at the heart of Mammoth Lakes, close to the town center. While winter skiing is peak season, summer visits offer exceptionally cool weather and forests rich in negative oxygen ions. We booked a high-floor suite, perfect for family stays, and were welcomed with a glass of champagne per person upon arrival—a lovely touch. A local guide whispered to me: come to the lakeshore at dawn in June, and you might witness trout leaping to snatch dragonflies from the air. As our off-road tires crunched over volcanic ash on the Rainbow Route, it finally made sense why National Geographic dubbed this "North America’s most otherworldly place."
