It once housed the temporary palace of Horio Yoshiharu, the founder of Matsue Castle, and witnessed the castle's foundation. Today, this historic space serves as the seat of Matsue Gokoku Jinja Shrine, enshrining the souls of over 20,000 heroes from the Izumo and Oki regions who sacrificed their lives for their country. It serves as a solemn place of remembrance and prayer. On the east side of Kitanomaru stands the Horse Washing Pond, a site that has existed since the castle's founding. Its clear waters are said to have been used by samurai to wash, cool, and rest their horses, offering a glimpse into Edo-period castle life. The ruins of Kitanomaru Gate, once the main entrance to Kitanomaru, and along with the ruins of the Mizunote Gate, formed part of the defensive system and daily passageway. Visitors can still ascend the stone steps and enter the main castle grounds, feeling like they've traveled back in time to the days of Matsue Castle, where samurai and locals mingled.
