Exploring the interior of Matsue Castle's castle tower: Through-hole and Tengu room

#AugustGoodPlaces2025 Entering the interior of Matsue Castle's keep, one can truly experience its unique structure. Unlike Himeji Castle, Matsue Castle, due to timber shortages, lacked a massive core pillar. Instead, 96 through-pillars spanning two floors, providing the structural support within 308 wooden pillars. This structural design is a key reason for Matsue Castle's designation as a National Treasure. Some pillars are covered with cladding, secured with iron wheels or bolts to repair cracks or reinforce poorly made timbers, demonstrating the architectural ingenuity of the time. Slots (teppo slats and yaku slats) are located along each step of the keep, allowing for firing at attackers from various angles. The second step even has angled slots specifically for targeting climbers climbing the stone wall. The thick, wide paulownia wood staircase leading to the upper levels is both corrosion-resistant and fireproof. Climbing all the way to the fifth floor, one reaches the top step, commonly known as the "Tengu no Ma," surrounded by high railings, creating a 360-degree observation tower.
