Climbing the 365 steps from the station was no small feat, but the village’s charm — narrow alleys, lemon groves, and a sweeping view — made it worthwhile. Then came Vernazza, perhaps the most photogenic of them all, with its petite harbor and medieval tower. I lingered over fresh focaccia and wine from nearby slopes, as church bells echoed through the air. Finally, Monterosso al Mare greeted me with sandy beaches and gelato stands. I swam in the salty breeze, waves crashing gently against sun-warmed stones. Best time to visit: April to June or September — fewer crowds, perfect weather, and vibrant bloom. Getting there: Take a train from La Spezia — cars are restricted, and the train connects all five villages easily.
