A Travelogue Capturing the Serene and Profound Charm of Nagoya

Nagoya, located in central Japan, offers the convenience of a big city while exuding the relaxed atmosphere of a smaller town. It wasn’t crowded with tourists, and I loved the seamless coexistence of tradition and modernity. My first stop was Nagoya Castle. The golden shachihoko ornaments gleamed magnificently, and the castle itself exuded grandeur even amidst the urban setting. Inside, the exhibition hall provided a fascinating glimpse into Nagoya’s history, dating back to the Edo period. The surrounding gardens were beautifully maintained, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll and photography. Next, I visited Osu Kannon Temple and the adjoining Osu Shopping Street. The temple was quaint and tranquil, while the shopping street was bustling with traditional crafts and street food. I particularly enjoyed the miso katsu and tenmusu, which offered rich flavors unique to Nagoya. I couldn’t miss trying Nagoya’s signature dish, hitsumabushi. The grilled eel rice bowl, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, was a delight to eat in three different ways: as is, with green onions, wasabi, and seaweed, and finally as ochazuke with broth poured over it. It was truly a special experience. On the second day, I visited the Nagoya City Science Museum. Its planetarium, one of the largest in the world, was awe-inspiring, and the interactive exhibits provided fun and educational experiences for both kids and adults. In the evening, I strolled around the Sakae district, enjoying the night views of Nagoya TV Tower and Oasis 21. The city, which felt calm during the day, transformed into a sophisticated urban landscape illuminated by lights at night. Nagoya is a city where you can travel at a relaxed pace, enjoying tradition, modernity, and culinary delights all in one place. It’s less bustling than Tokyo or Osaka, but that’s precisely what makes it an even more charming destination.
