Praying at Naminoue Shrine, Okinawa

Before entering to worship or pay respect to the shrine, Japanese people believe that they must cleanse their bodies by washing their hands and mouths before entering to worship the sacred objects in the shrine. The important method is to start by bowing at the water sprinkling point. Then use your right hand to hold a ladle, scoop up water (in sufficient quantity) and pour it over your left hand. Alternately do the same with your right hand, then switch back to holding the ladle with your right hand again before pouring water into your left palm and scooping water to rinse your mouth. Spit it out using your left hand to cover your mouth. Then wash your left hand again and set the ladle up so that the remaining water flows out of the ladle. To cleanse the ladle Minanoue Shrine is located on a cliff, next to the sea. You can see the view and walk from the shrine to relax on the beach. It is considered to be a one-stop trip to two places. It is only a 15-minute walk from the center of Naha.
