Visiting Wat Mahathat was one of those moments where history felt incredibly alive around me. I’ve always been drawn to places that carry stories in their stones, and this ancient ruin in Ayutthaya did exactly that. The sprawling grounds, worn-down prangs, and headless Buddha statues told of glory, war, and time. What struck me most was the iconic Buddha head nestled within the roots of a Bodhi tree. It was much smaller than I expected, but undeniably powerful. There was a quiet sacredness to it—you could feel it the moment you stepped close. I instinctively bowed slightly as I took a photo, not just because it’s respectful, but because it felt right. Walking around the ruins, I could only imagine what the place must’ve looked like at its peak. The collapsed prang at the center still looms large, and even though most of the structures are no longer whole, they hold a kind of timeless beauty. I spent nearly an hour just wandering and soaking it all in. There were no loud crowds, just pockets of people taking it slow—some quietly praying, others like me, just taking a reflective walk. I went early in the morning, and the soft sunlight made everything glow. Wat Mahathat reminded me that some places don’t need to be whole to be beautiful.
