Spring’s First Breath in Huanglong Valley

Nestled in the northern reaches of Sichuan Province, Huanglong in late April offers a quiet, almost ethereal charm. Though spring has technically arrived, the high-altitude valley still holds onto winter’s chill—temperatures can dip as low as 1°C, especially in the early mornings. Yet this lingering cold adds a serene stillness to the landscape, with snow still dusting the surrounding peaks and the alpine forests slowly awakening from their winter slumber. While the famed travertine pools may not yet be full—the water flow is at its lowest this time of year—the absence of crowds allows for a more contemplative experience. Delicate signs of late spring emerge in budding trees and the soft green tinge that begins to touch the slopes. Though June is widely considered the best time to witness Huanglong’s vivid turquoise waters at their peak, April offers its own quiet allure—a prelude to the spectacle to come. The food here is very Tibet-authentic. Having said that, if you are not used to the flavour, be prepared that Chinese food may not be of much variety. #huanglong
