This time, I visited Gotokuji Temple in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, home to many beckoning cats, which I'd seen frequently on social media and had been curious about. 😊 I went there primarily to see the beckoning cats, but the temple grounds themselves were also packed with attractions, abundant nature, and numerous historic buildings. ✨ You're sure to find a view you'll want to take photos of, so keep looking! 📸 The connection between Gotokuji Temple and beckoning cats dates back to ancient times, when a cat beckoned a lord returning from falconry to the temple, where it suddenly thundered and began to rain. The lord, who was able to avoid the thunderstorm, was deeply moved by his good fortune. 🤗 After that, Gotokuji Temple began calling the cat that brought good fortune "Maneki Neko," and a Maneki-neko Hall was built. It seems that many people now visit the temple to pray for safety in their homes, prosperity in business, and better fortune. The Maneki-neko at Gotokuji Temple isn't holding a gold coin, but instead has its right paw raised. This symbolizes beckoning people and bringing "connections." Apparently, the cat is not holding a gold coin and is holding only its right hand up, based on the teaching that encounters with people will bring good fortune naturally. 🌈 In addition, there are also beckoning cats depicted on the votive plaques, which I felt was unique to Gotokuji Temple.
