🕍 Dogapsa Temple: A Peaceful Escape into Korea’s Spiritual Heritage

🍃 Tucked away in the quiet countryside of Yeongam, Jeollanam-do, Dogapsa Temple is a hidden gem that invites visitors to slow down and soak in centuries of Korean history and Buddhist tradition. Set against the stunning backdrop of Wolchulsan National Park, this temple is a perfect mix of nature, culture, and tranquility. ✨️ Why Visit Dogapsa? Originally built in the late Silla Dynasty by the Buddhist monk Doseon, Dogapsa has stood the test of time. It’s not just a temple—it’s a walk through Korean history. You’ll find: . Haetalmun Gate, built in 1473, symbolizing spiritual liberation (designated as National Treasure No. 50) . A stone seated Buddha and a five-story pagoda showing off the elegance of ancient craftsmanship . Beautiful wooden statues of Manjusri and Samantabhadra, both considered national treasures The atmosphere here is peaceful and reflective, especially if you visit in spring when the 1 km-long path leading to the temple is covered in blooming cherry blossoms. 🌸 ✈️ How to Get There From Seoul, it’s quite easy to reach Dogapsa, though it takes a bit of time: 1. Take a bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Mokpo – this ride takes about 4 hours. 2. From Mokpo Terminal, catch a local bus to Yeongam. 3. Then take a local bus from Yeongam to Dogapsa (buses usually run around 9:30 AM and 4:10 PM) ( 🚗 If you're driving, set your GPS to Dogapsa-ro, and follow the road signs once you reach Gunseo-myeon in Yeongam Do) 💰 Temple Entry: Free! Parking: ₩2,000–₩7,500 💶 Approximate total cost per person (from Seoul): Bus tickets (round trip): ₩40,000–₩60,000 Local transportation: ₩10,000–₩15,000 Total: ₩50,000–₩75,000 (around €34–€51 depending on the exchange rate) ✨️ Bonus: Try a Temple Stay If you’re curious about monastic life, Dogapsa occasionally offers Temple Stay programs where you can join in meditation, tea ceremonies, and other cultural experiences. It’s a unique way to get hands-on with Korea’s spiritual side. My experience: Dogapsa isn’t as famous as some temples closer to Seoul, but that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s quiet, authentic, and wrapped in beautiful natural surroundings. If you're looking for a peaceful day trip, this is a place that will leave you feeling calm and recharged. It's been one of my favourite temple to visit #daytrip #historicallandmarks #temple #southkorea #jeollanamdo #trip #Dogapsa
