2025 Gero Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in July)

Gero Onsen, one of Japan's top three hot springs! I visited Gero while traveling to Nagoya. Actually, this was my second visit. :) During my stay in Gero, I stayed at the Yamagataya Ryokan, which offers stunning river views from the rooms and serves delicious food—truly a great value accommodation! I tried breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Yamagataya. Breakfast was a clean and traditional Japanese meal, while lunch and dinner were served as kaiseki course meals. The upgraded Hida beef shabu-shabu I had for lunch was so delicious it brought tears to my eyes. 🥹🤤 The ryokan features both a large public bath and private baths, allowing you to choose according to your preference. Nagoya - Gero Onsen - Takayama - Shirakawa-go - Tateyama Kurobe Day 1: It takes about 40 minutes to travel from Nagoya Airport to the city center, costing around ¥1000. Most restaurants close at 10 PM, while izakayas usually stay open until around midnight. On weekdays, closing times might be even later. Day 2: Purchased the Hida 3-Day Pass from JR, which includes round-trip bus tickets to Shirakawa-go (~¥12000). Visited Gero Onsen. The town was larger than expected, with shops, shrines, and everything you need. Explored Gero Gassho Village, which is relatively small with limited photo spots, but the mountain slide was very fun. Note that most restaurants are closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. Day 3: Visited Takayama and Shirakawa-go. The bus pass needs to be exchanged in person, and staff will explain the bus schedules in detail. There were quite a lot of visitors, but about 10-20% of the shops were closed. Around 3-4 hours is sufficient to explore. Returned to Takayama and enjoyed Hida beef sukiyaki. Day 4: Spent the day exploring Takayama City, which has a nostalgic atmosphere. Strolled through the old streets and then returned to Nagoya. Day 5: Had Hida beef barbecue, visited Nagoya Castle, Osu Kannon, and Osu Shopping Street. Day 6: Joined a 2-day, 1-night local tour to Kamikochi and Tateyama Kurobe. Kamikochi is stunning with its clear mountains, majestic snowy peaks, and picturesque scenery that is truly refreshing. Day 7: Explored Tateyama Kurobe using six different modes of transportation, which took about 8 hours including sightseeing. Unfortunately, the weather was bad with strong winds and heavy rain, and the temperature dropped sharply, making it hard to enjoy photo-taking or the experience. Day 8: Visited Chubu Electric Power Museum, explored the underground shopping streets, and then headed back home.

Gero Gassho Village is an outdoor museum located in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture. There are more than ten Gassho-style buildings here that recreate traditional rural life in the Hida region. It was a winter trip to Gifu, Japan with my partner. Gifu in winter is a magical escape filled with stunning scenery and cultural treasures 😍 We started our journey in Takayama, a charming city surrounded by the Japanese Alps. The preserved Sanmachi Suji district was a highlight, with its traditional wooden 🪵 buildings, sake breweries, and shops. Walking through the snow-covered streets felt like stepping back in time. The ambiance was perfect for photography, especially with the warm glow of lanterns at dusk. The sunrise and sunset shots from here were spectacular, and the peaceful vibe made it one of the most memorable stops of our trip. At GeroGero Butter Stand, they sell butter sandwiches, food, drinks, and souvenirs made with locally sourced Gero milk. Located in the Gero Onsen town, the cute yellow exterior stands out! I immediately tried the butter soy sauce rice ball that I had been curious about, and the rich butter matched perfectly with the grilled rice ball. It was so delicious that I went back the next day to have it again. You can also enjoy your food while soaking in the milk-colored foot bath with cute calves! Be sure to visit when you go to Gero Onsen.

Among them, the most recommended is the bath salts that you can use to enjoy the hot spring water even after returning home! - It's a 5-minute walk from Gero Station. You can take the train from Nagoya Station to Gero Station, but if that's too much of a hassle, try taking the shuttle bus for a round trip of 4,500 yen! - I recommend ordering breakfast for meals, and I also recommend using a nearby restaurant for lunch and dinner. Yunoshimakan Hotel is located in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture. It is an old 5-star hotel. This hotel was also once a hotel where the Japanese royal family stayed. The hotel is located on a hill, but don't worry about transportation because there is a shuttle service from JR Station every now and then. The staff will send an email to inform you of the available times before your trip. On the way back, they will drop you off at the train station as usual. I chose to book a room with an outdoor bath and got a very private room. The room is quite spacious. It has a bit of a mystical feeling because the hotel is quite old, but overall it is clean. The hotel is called Kusakabe Almeria in Gero Onsen 🏨 You move around the hotel by cable car. (No elevators.) Very rare!! There are many rooms, and women can choose the color of their yukata for the hotel for free. This is the second time I have stayed at Gero Onsen Ogawaya. Ogawaya is a large, established hotel. Every time I stay at the Yuraji Annex. Yuraji Annex seems to be a annex built later on the hotel. The facilities in the room are very new, with a terrace and a river view. When staying at Ogawaya Yuraji Annex, you can enjoy an old-style Japanese bath or stay in a new-style hotel room. The hotel is close to Gero Station, about a ten-minute walk away. You can also contact the hotel to arrange a shuttle bus. There was quite a lot of it, so as a sashimi lover, I was grateful!!! ⁡ ⚫︎Shrimp stew with clams and green laver 🍲 The shrimp stew was fluffy and delicious, and I drank up all the dashi 🥺 ⁡ ⚫︎Local trout baked with potatoes wrapped in cellophane 🥔 Both the trout and potatoes were delicious. I went to Hotel Kusakabe Almeria in Gero Onsen, Gifu Prefecture, one of the three most famous hot springs in Japan! The selling points of this hotel are the spacious rooms, the natural Gero hot spring with a spectacular open-air bath, and the luxurious buffet. They provide free transportation from Gero Station at any time. This time, I stayed in the cheapest room, which cost about 12,000 yen including two meals. The village has been recreated with Gassho-style houses relocated from Shirakawa-go and other places, and it has a very charming atmosphere.
