Starting from the town of Cesarò, I cycled through dense forests, serene lakes, and rolling hills, all while breathing in the fresh mountain air. The entrance to the park is free, which is a huge bonus for nature lovers like me! The highlight was definitely Lago Maulazzo, a peaceful lake surrounded by towering trees, perfect for a short break. Wildlife spotting was also incredible—wild boars, eagles, and the Nebrodi horses were all around. I spent about five hours biking through different trails, with Mount Etna always in the background. #summervacay Lipari felt like the heartbeat of the Aeolians: colorful town, black-rock beaches, and bougainvillea on every corner. I climbed to the castle ruins for sweeping views, then relaxed with granita at sunset overlooking Vesuvius across the sea. I rented a scooter the next day and chased views of white pumice cliffs and hot springs. It’s volcanic, vibrant, and full of summer life. A perfect island base.

As I wandered through the romantic narrow streets of Catania and Taormina, I felt like I’d stepped into a classic Italian film. The cobblestone alleys, colorful balconies draped with flowers, and small family-run cafes created an atmosphere full of charm and intimacy. The island’s iconic Mount Etna dominated the skyline, its snow-capped peak visible from many places. While I didn’t visit it personally, locals spoke of its majesty and the unique volcanic soil that gives Sicilian produce its exceptional flavor. The food was another highlight of my trip. I fell in love with pasta alla Norma, the perfect balance of tomato, eggplant, and salty ricotta salata. Sicilian pizza, with its thick crust and bold toppings, was equally unforgettable. For dessert, a fresh cannoli from a local pastry shop was the ultimate treat. Sicily felt safe and inviting throughout my stay. The locals were incredibly warm, always ready to share a story or help with directions. My advice to travelers? Take time to explore on foot, lose yourself in the winding streets, and embrace the slower pace of life. Sicily isn’t just a destination—it’s a place where the soul of Italy shines brightest.

The greatest surprise of my trip to Sicily, Italy, was the magical Gole dell'Alcantara canyon. It was a hidden gem recommended by an old Sicilian colleague (a Frenchman with Sicilian parents) that I came to know about. The Alcantara Gorge (Gole dell'Alcantara) is located in the Alcantara Valley, nestled between the cities of Taormina and Randazzo on the island of Sicily. Rivers, waterfalls, pools, bizarre rocks, canyons, and greenery make it an ideal summer retreat for the locals! On the way to the canyon, you can also glimpse the mysterious remains of prehistoric castles (last two pictures), which are very interesting!
