The old cathedral is the essence of 12th-century Romanesque architecture, and the new cathedral is a melting pot of beauty spanning the ages from Gothic to Baroque. The view from the stairs connecting the two cathedrals is an unforgettable moment. 🚩 Shell House (Casa de las Conchas) This impressive building with dozens of shell decorations covering its walls is a Gothic mansion filled with shells, a symbol of pilgrims. It is currently used as a library, and its interior retains a simple yet medieval charm. 🚩 Roman Bridge (Puente Romano) An ancient Roman vestige that crosses the Tormes River! This bridge is a passage connecting the past and the present, and is the best point to enjoy the panoramic view of Salamanca. When we talk about Salamanca Cathedral, we actually mean two churches connected together. First there was the old cathedral from the 12th-13th centuries; then the new one from the 16th century. The old cathedral is in Romanesque style and has an outstanding Gallo tower. This temple, which was built at the end of the 12th century, houses the Chapel of St. Martin or the Oil. The major repaintings, dating from the 15th century by several painters, led by Dello Delli, are also noteworthy. The frescoes covering the vault are the work of Nicolás Florentino. In this great painting we can see an image of Christ at the Last Judgment. The old cathedral attracts the attention of tourists because of the beautiful tombs of bishops and members of the nobility that are located inside. The new cathedral was built in the 16th century and completed by Churriguera in the 18th century, and houses a statue of the Assumption of the Virgin sculpted in 1624 by the sculptor Esteban de Rueda. In the new cathedral, the choir stalls designed by Joaquín Churriguera in 1727 are particularly noteworthy. #summerdestinations Visiting the Salamanca Cathedral was like stepping into a time machine! 🕰️ Located in the heart of Salamanca, Spain, this stunning cathedral is actually two-in-one: the Old Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century, and the New Cathedral, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The combined entrance fee was just €5, a steal for the beauty and history you get to experience. As soon as I walked in, the intricate architecture and awe-inspiring ceilings took my breath away. 🏰 The old part of the cathedral has a more Romanesque style, with charming, rustic details and an intimate feel. My favorite part was climbing up the towers – the views over the city of Salamanca were incredible, with terracotta roofs stretching out as far as the eye could see. 🌇 In the New Cathedral, the Gothic and Baroque styles blend together beautifully. I spent ages admiring the ornate carvings, especially the famous astronaut figure hidden on the façade – a quirky little detail that’s become quite the attraction! 🚀 After exploring inside, I wandered around the Plaza Mayor, just a short walk away, and enjoyed some tapas at one of the many outdoor cafes. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the lively atmosphere of Salamanca.
