The journey from Shanghai to Xi'an was on a Chinese sleeper train, which allowed me to immerse myself even more in Chinese daily life. I was particularly surprised by the three-tiered bunks in the train cars. I traveled on the very top bunk, which was both unusual and thrilling. After 14 hours of travel, we arrived at Xi'an station. The atmosphere here was entirely different: more formal, measured, and calm. The colors around were less vibrant but more intriguing and mysterious. A few words about the hotel. Once again, Chinese hospitality was top-notch, and we were checked in much earlier than expected without any extra charge. Moreover, the room was very modern and high-tech, featuring a huge bed, numerous sensors, a smart toilet, and automatic curtains. On the table, we found a small gift in the form of postcards, water, and soda. After catching our breath, we set out to explore the new city. One of the unique features of this city is that its center is surrounded by a stone wall about 14 km long. The most popular way to circle the wall is by bike. Access to the city wall is ticketed. We climbed up and rented bicycles from a special station on top. To be honest, the bikes were of very poor quality, heavily worn out and battered by life. The activity turned out to be quite challenging, as riding on the stone pavement was tough, and the bicycles were in a sorry state. At one point, I even had to swap my bike for another at the next station because the handlebars fell off. But in the end, we did it and conquered the wall. While riding along the wall, we noticed a charming Buddhist temple and decided to visit it next. I was very curious to see another religious culture from the inside. What stood out the most to me was a pond with huge live carp on the temple grounds. Finally, we went to the city center to see the Bell Tower, strolled through shopping malls, had dinner, and returned to the hotel. After all, a grand day awaited us—the event we came to Xi'an for: climbing Mount Huashan (more on that in a separate post). Unfortunately, we only spent three days in Xi'an and didn’t have time to visit the Terracotta Army. But this gives us a reason to return. By the way, Xi'an had the best food of the entire trip. Legend says Qiu Chuji practiced cultivation here in 1174 AD, making it a sacred site for the Quanzhen Sect~ The abandoned "Nine-Story Demon Tower" looks a bit eerie due to years of neglect, and the giant stone elephant deep inside is eye-catching, with its tusks wrapped in red prayer ribbons—so ceremonial! 2. 🚗 About transportation Just navigate to "Xueshandong." The Terracotta Warriors are a tourist spot that gets incredibly crowded with Chinese tourists. It's often written that you should go to almost anything in the morning, but I'll share the itinerary I took this time, arriving at the airport at 9:30am and starting in the afternoon. It was a Friday in mid-September. I'd heard that if you go before noon it'll be incredibly crowded, so I followed an article by a Chinese person and went the opposite direction - it was the right decision! First, I booked tickets to the Terracotta Warriors for 2:30-3:30pm (I booked them in advance on trip.com). My flight arrived in Xi'an at 9:30am and I was able to leave the airport by 10am, so I headed first to Xianyang's Unification Square. It took about 25 RMB and took a 30-minute Didi ride in the opposite direction from the Terracotta Warriors. There I snapped a photo of the giant statue of Emperor Qin Shi Huang and the statues of Meng Tian and others from Kingdom on the bridge over the Wei River. I spent about an hour and a half sightseeing. After that, I took another Didi taxi from near Unification Square to the Terracotta Warriors, taking about 80-90 minutes for 155 yuan, a little over 3,000 yen. When I arrived just after 1 PM, the main museum entrance was packed with group tourists. So I went back to the entrance and took a shuttle bus to the Mausoleum of the First Emperor. (I had reserved a ticket for 2:30 PM, but I was able to get in! My passport served as my ticket.) I purchased an electric cart on WeChat and spent about an hour looking around. The electric cart doesn't stop at certain spots, but you can get off along the way or walk back, and be sure to see the Mausoleum itself (second photo). I took the shuttle back to the museum entrance and finally headed to the museum. This time, I was looking for a Japanese-speaking tour guide at the entrance, but unfortunately they couldn't speak English, so I couldn't find one. I gave up and went inside alone. It was just before 3 PM, so unlike before, there was no line at the entrance, and I was able to enter smoothly. Here again, I went the wrong way. We toured the area in the following order: Exhibition Hall → Pit 3 (for 10 RMB you can take a commemorative photo with a Terracotta Warriors replica) → Pit 2, taking a break at the gift shop along the way before finally heading to Pit 1. We also entered through the back door, so we got that spectacular view at the very end! At this time, there were no other people around from the front, so we had a chance to take a photo. We spent just under two hours sightseeing in the museum area. I left around 16:50 and was walking towards the exit wondering what to do on the way back when I spotted a direct bus to the Bell Tower. It cost 30 RMB and took 55 minutes to get there. When I looked, there were buses departing at 16:30 and 17:00.
