We've been to Chaozhou twice with our kids. Once during the Dragon Boat Festival in 2022 and again during May Day in 2023. I decided to write a guide for everyone's reference, especially for those traveling with kids. We're also a family trip. 🚶🏻‍♂️ Itinerary: The first time, we took the bullet train from Xiamen North to Chaoshan, a 1:30-minute ride for 95 yuan, then took a taxi to the Old Town. The second time, we drove, like a special forces team, after lunch at Dongshan Island. We drove there and then, after watching the light show, returned to Xiamen. PS: Xiamen and Chaozhou are not far apart, so both options are convenient. Chaozhou Old Town is basically accessible by walking, and some attractions are a bit further away, so taxis are around 10 yuan. Accommodation: Our first stay at this B&B, Mumian Mansion, is a 4 overall and I'd recommend it to friends. It's a converted old villa with a distinct Republican-era feel. The common areas are great for photo ops, and there's plenty of space for the kids. The room was clean and tidy, and the housekeeper was friendly and courteous, helping with luggage. There's a rooftop where we bought some draft beer. Things to do: 1. Guangji Bridge During the day, you can walk across the Guangji Bridge. The entrance fee seems to be 20 yuan. My kids loved running and jumping across the bridge, looking around. It was a real treat. In the evening, watch the bridge being dismantled. Don't miss the evening light show. Arrive early at 8:30 to get a good spot. Last May, it was packed, so we could only watch from afar. 2⃣️ Archway Street Walking around Archway Street at night, the illuminated street looks like it's been filtered, making for even better photos. There are so many archways! One after another. At the end of Archway Street is Guangji Bridge. 3⃣️ Zaiyang Teahouse This is the teahouse we visited for the second time. It's very local and a great place for tea, opera, and afternoon tea. You can enjoy traditional Kung Fu tea, served in just three cups, and traditional snacks and fresh fruit. Performances of Cantonese opera and Republican-style songs are featured. The open-air patio is filled with wooden tea tables. Drinking tea, listening to music, eating sunflower seeds, and chatting is like a scene from a movie, transporting you back to the Republican era. 4⃣️ Thai Buddhist Temple This is a place we missed. It wasn't open the first time 😷, and we were rushed the second time. But I think it's worth a visit. The photos look like you're in Southeast Asia. 5⃣️ Small attractions Such as the Imperial Concubine's Mansion, Yanqing Hall, and Huang Gong Temple are all clustered together. Take your time and explore, and you'll see them all. They have a sense of history and architecture. 😋Food: When in Chaozhou, you absolutely have to try shengyan! We ate at a popular restaurant, [Yuandan Jiuliao], which had a huge line. They only offer takeout, so we packed it up and ate it on the rooftop of our B&B, which was a unique experience. You absolutely have to try the goose! It's so delicious! [Yingzhou Lion Head Goose] is right off Paifang Street, in a small restaurant separated from the hotel lobby. It's absolutely delicious and completely changed my perception of goose meat. We packed it up and took it back to Xiamen!
