Just got back from a trip around Guiyang, and I finally figured it out! Who says autumn in Guizhou is only about karst? From October to November, the mountains and fields hide golden terraces, fairytale ginkgo trees, and secret canyons. It's less crowded, more beautiful, and cheaper. I urge you to be cautious, as you might not want to leave! 🍂Why is the area around Guiyang so YYDS in autumn and winter? • Enjoy the scenery all to yourself: Skip the crowds at Huangguoshu Lake, and take photos amidst the terraced fields, just you and the undulating rice paddies. Even footsteps can be heard in the hills behind the ancient town. • Autumn colors are a palette of colors: In October, the terraced fields are covered in gold, in November, the ginkgo trees turn yellow, and in the canyon, red maples contrast with the clear waters. Every photo is a wallpaper-worthy image. • The weather is incredibly comfortable: Temperatures range from a steady 15-23°C, perfect for a light jacket. Without the summer downpours, you'll stay dry while hiking and exploring the villages. • Excellent value: B&B prices have been halved, there's no need to rush for tickets to scenic spots, and even the sour fish soup at the farmhouses hasn't increased in price. 📸 Must-see spots in October and November 1. Gaopo Yunding Village: A one-hour drive from Guiyang leads directly to a hidden gem reminiscent of Hayao Miyazaki. In October, the terraced fields are draped in a pale golden velvet. In November, the rice stalks bend into heavy arcs, and the breeze shimmers the entire valley in a warm glow. On the Yunding grasslands, cattle and sheep scatter like pearls. On foggy mornings, you step across the fragrant grass. In the evening, you visit Hongyan Canyon to watch the rosy sunset. The jars of tea and roasted potatoes in the old teahouse at the village entrance warm your heart. 2. Tuole Village: November in the "World Ancient Ginkgo Hometown" is breathtaking! Over 1,500 ancient ginkgo trees, the oldest reaching 1,500 years old, form a golden carpet. Stone bridges and streams nestle among them, and every step you take will leave you buried in fallen leaves. Stay at a ginkgo farmhouse, enjoy ginkgo-stewed chicken, and watch the sun shine through the branches and leaves in the morning, creating a fairytale-like experience. 3. The Back Mountain of Qingyan Ancient Town: Avoid the crowds on the main street! Exit the west gate and walk up the back streets. The bluestone pavement is shaded by trees, and the shadows stretch out long in the slanting November sun. The osmanthus trees in the abandoned houses halfway up the mountain are covered with golden dust. Climbing to the top, you can see a sea of dark green roofs, and smoke wafts over with the aroma of stewed vegetables. Descending the mountain, turn to Waijiao Village for lotus leaf glutinous rice chicken, a delicious treat you'll want to lick your fingers. 4. Kaiyang Nanjiang Grand Canyon: In October, the canyon resembles an overturned emerald plate, with clear water flowing like a ribbon around the mountains. Walking along the plank road, maple leaves turn red at the tips, ginkgo leaves turn yellow at the edges, and fallen leaves swirl in the fragmented light of the "One Line Sky." At the end of the canyon, you can enjoy freshly baked corn cakes wrapped in soybean flour, so sweet it warms your chest. Take the cable car to the summit to see the green silk canyon lying at the foot of the mountain. 5. Qianling Mountain Park: A treasured autumn viewing spot in the city! In late October, the ginkgo trees in front of Hongfu Temple turn golden. Macaques hop across the pine branches, stepping on fallen leaves. The mingled Zen and vibrant energy are incredibly soothing. Climb the Kanzhu Pavilion for a panoramic view of the entire city in autumn. Then, head down the mountain to try the Jinpai Luoji Changwang Noodles. The blood curd is tender and smooth, the noodles are chewy, and a bowl of ice jelly is just the right balance for a greasy bite. 🍜 Locals' Secret Taste of Autumn • Qingyan Ancient Town: Braised pork knuckle is a must-try, tender and boneless, served with rose icy jelly to soften the greasiness. Waijiao Village's glutinous rice chicken is imbued with the delicate fragrance of lotus leaves. • Tuole Village: Stewed chicken with ginkgo nuts is the signature dish. The sweetness of the ginkgo nuts blends with the aroma of the chicken, and paired with sauerkraut and stir-fried bacon, it's a perfect match. • Guiyang City: Mao Auntie's glutinous rice at Liuguangmen is generous, the sour broth at Guichu Sour Soup Beef is appetizing, and the hot pot of fresh-cut beef is incredible. • Gaopo Yunding Village: A must-try is roasted potatoes with jarred tea, a savory, soft, and tender flavor. Stop by on the way down the mountain for a bowl of spicy chicken noodles – it's so delicious you'll stomp your feet. ✨ Pitfalls & Tips 1. Gaopo Yunding Village doesn't require an entrance fee; drive directly to the village using a navigation system. Drive slowly in foggy weather and wear non-slip shoes. 2. The best time to visit Tuole Village is from late October to mid-November. Book a homestay under the ginkgo trees in advance, as early mornings are the least crowded for photo opportunities. 3. There's no entrance fee to the back hills of Qingyan Ancient Town. Just follow the smoke from the cooking stoves and you won't get lost. The rose candy on the main street is freshly made for a more fragrant and delicious experience. 4. It's recommended to visit the Nanjiang Grand Canyon in the morning, when the sun shines brightly into the canyon. If you're not very fit, don't skimp on the cable car fare; the scenery from the top is even more breathtaking. 5. Guizhou's scenic spots are scattered, so driving from the city or taking a direct tourist bus is recommended for travel in the surrounding areas. It's more cost-effective and convenient than taking a taxi. In October and November, the Guiyang area is free from the hustle and bustle of peak season, yet it evokes the richest autumn vibes. Sit under a ginkgo tree, enjoy free-range chicken, stand on the terraced fields, watch the clouds drift by, and the wind is filled with the fragrance of rice and the sweet sweetness of osmanthus. This is what autumn should be like! #GuiyangAroundTravel #GuizhouAutumnScenery #NicheTravelDestinations #OctoberTravelRecommendations #GinkgoCheck-In Spots
