Ali & Nino Statue stands on the seaside promenade along the Black Sea in Batumi, a kinetic sculpture created by Georgian sculptor Tamara Kvesitadze that has become one of the city's landmarks. It consists of 2 approx. 8-meter-tall figures made of layered steel plates that perform a cycle of "meeting and parting" every 10 minutes or so: the 2 figures slowly slide toward each other, their steel plates interlocking and passing through one another as if merging into one, yet they never truly touch before retreating to their original positions, freezing the novel's tragic ending of unrequited love into a visible daily routine. After dark, the statue lights up with changing colors, reflecting the sunset glow over the Black Sea and the coastal nightscape, making it a great time for photos.Batumi · 1.9 km from downtown

Gonio Fortress was an important border fortress on the eastern coast of the Black Sea during the Roman Empire, possessing unique strategic significance. It guarded the entrance to the Chorochi and Ajaliskali river valleys, connecting the southwestern inland region of Georgia with the Black Sea coast. Due to its geographical location, Gonio Fortress was a vital pillar of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires. Gonio Fortress is a complex structure with numerous towers. Historically, the fortress underwent several renovations. The walls clearly demonstrate its multi-layered architectural structure. For centuries, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and Italian city-states (such as Genoa) held considerable interest in this strategic fortress.Gonio · 1.4 km from downtown

We were in Batumi in July and came to the sculpture closer to sunset. The impression was strong — the figures move slowly and smoothly, and the moment when they pass through each other really gets you. We stood through two cycles in a row, even though a full circle takes about 10 minutes. It's crowded in the evening, but you can still find a spot by the railing. The Ferris wheel is right next to it, so it's easy to combine with a walk. During the day, I think there's not much to see — all the magic is in the lighting and the dark. The only downside: you wait for the movement longer than it actually lasts. But I'd still recommend it — we've never seen anything like this anywhere else.
