Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi

Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi

7.5
4.8/5
83 reviews
Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi stands on Elia Hill on the left bank of the Mtkvari River and is the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The church adopts the traditional Georgian cross-dome architectural style, with the central dome covered in gold leaf and a gilded cross standing at the top, reaching a total height of nearly 100 m including the underground section. Thanks to its massive size and commanding position, its golden dome can be seen from almost anywhere in the city of Tbilisi. The interior of the church is also worth a close look. In the northeast corner, there is a mosaic icon of the Virgin Mary; the southeast corner houses a display case with a cross and a handwritten Bible; and the northwest corner displays a model of the holy city of Jerusalem made of mica. The church also has several chapels underground, and the main murals were painted by contemporary Georgian artists in a traditional style. In addition to the main cathedral, the entire complex includes auxiliary facilities such as a separate bell tower, a monastery, and a seminary, which are quite impressive in scale. As the mother church of the Georgian Orthodox Church, the cathedral hosts Orthodox rituals and religious activities all year round. The interior murals and mosaic decorations create a solemn religious atmosphere, and from the cathedral's platform, you can overlook the city of Tbilisi and the scenery on both banks of the Kura River.Tbilisi · 4.4 km from downtown

Chronicles of Georgia stands on the top of Ghani Hill in the northern suburbs of Tbilisi, right next to the Tbilisi sea, and is a massive sculpture complex that sculptor Zurab Tsereteli began building in 1985. 16 bronze pillars, each approx. 35 m high, form an open array on the vast hilltop, looking like Stonehenge from a distance, and are therefore also known as the "Chronicles of Georgia". The pillars are covered with bronze reliefs from bottom to top: the lower sections depict biblical stories and the life of Christ, while the upper sections feature Georgian kings, queens, commanders, saints, and poets, interspersed with scenes of daily life such as grape harvests and festive feasts. Beside the pillar array stand the Grapevine Cross of Saint Nino and the Church of the Annunciation.Tbilisi · 7.6 km from downtown

Bridge of Peace is a pedestrian bridge over the Kura River in downtown Tbilisi, featuring an arched body with a steel frame and glass canopy. The bridge is approximately 150m long, connecting Rike Park on the riverbank with the streets of the Old Town, and is also considered a pedestrian passage between the new city and the old city. It was designed by an Italian architect. The entire steel structure was prefabricated in Italy and then transported to Tbilisi for on-site assembly. After its completion in 2010, it quickly became a highly recognizable modern landmark of the city. Its rounded, undulating shape is often compared to a marine creature arching its back, which is why it earned the nickname "Shrimp Bridge."Tbilisi · 4 km from downtown

The Clock Tower

The Clock Tower

5.9
4.4/5
7 reviews
The Clock Tower stands at the entrance of an alley in Tbilisi's Old Town, right next to the puppet theater founded by Rezo Gabriadze. The tower leans and features a mix of old and new bricks, looking from a distance like an old tower that might collapse at any moment. The walls are covered with handmade ceramic tiles, hiding small figurines, birds, animals, and playful patterns. The whole structure looks like a house straight out of a fairy tale book. Its signature is the hourly performance: on the hour, a small door at the top of the tower opens, an angel with golden wings leans out, and strikes the bell with a small hammer. To see the full process, it is recommended to wait on the street a few minutes in advance. Every day at noon and in the evening, a window at the base of the tower also hosts a puppet show called "The Circle of Life," which depicts the life cycle of meeting, starting a family, growing old, and saying goodbye in just a few minutes. You can watch it right from the street.Tbilisi · 3.7 km from downtown

Tbilisi sea is a large artificial reservoir located in the northeastern suburbs of Tbilisi. Built in the 1950s, it still serves as a source of urban water supply. Beaches, lawns, and walking paths are distributed around the lake, making it a popular spot for locals to cool off and play in the water during the summer: some sunbathe on the beach or go swimming, while others have picnics or play beach volleyball. Sailboats, jet skis, and water skis can often be seen crossing the lake, and interested visitors can also find places to experience water sports by the lakeside. In the evening, the lake surface reflects the distant mountains and the setting sun, making it very pleasant to sit on the shore and watch the sunset.Tbilisi · 7.8 km from downtown

The most striking feature of the church is undoubtedly its pure gold-clad dome, dazzling in the sunlight and exuding a gentle solemnity when illuminated at night. It's worth noting that the church's construction was primarily funded by donations from ordinary citizens—it's not just a building, but a symbol of Georgians rediscovering their faith and solidifying their national identity after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Georgia has a chronicle monument, which was built during the Soviet era and witnessed the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Many locals go to the Tbilisi Sea for vacation, swimming, and sunbathing. From the monument, you can see the Tbilisi Sea from a distance. It takes 12 minutes to walk from the monument to the beach.

The Mother Fortress is located high in Georgia, from where you can see the whole of Georgia. In the evening, you can take a cable car up the mountain to wait for the sun to set and watch the sunset. The temperature in Tbilisi at night is only over 20 degrees in this season, which is really comfortable.

The weather with sunny skies all day seems to wash away anyone's melancholy. Even in the middle of summer, the breeze makes the hot summer mild and pleasant. So far, I really like it here and I also like to continue to stay.

The Gabriadze Theater's clock tower is the most magical and doll-like place in Tbilisi! We simply couldn't miss it. It looks like it came straight out of an old fairy tale: all crooked and whimsical, decorated with vibrant mosaics created by Rezo Gabriadze himself. We arrived just in time to see the doors at the very top open, and an angel with golden wings appear and begin striking the bell with a hammer. You could spend hours examining the details of this tower; every tile is unique. I highly recommend it!

The Pillar of Life Cathedral is located in the urban area of Mtskheta, northwest of Tbilisi. It is also called the Svetitskhoveli Church. The church is one of the most sacred and magnificent churches in Georgia. It is also the second largest Christian holy place after the Jerusalem Church. It is famous for the blood cloak of Jesus and the pillars of early church buildings. The exterior of the cathedral is majestic and surrounded by a circle of walls. The interior decoration is gorgeous and delicate, with many exquisite murals and stickers. The architectural style has a dome and a cross-shaped plane. There are also tombs of several members of the Georgian royal family in the church, including the last two generations of Georgian kings.
