Shirogane Blue Pond (Aoiike)

4.6/5
152 reviews
Shirogane Blue Pond (Aoiike) is an artificial pond created after the eruption of Mount Tokachi, when a dam was built on the Biei River to prevent volcanic mudflow disasters, resulting in the accidental accumulation of water. The trunks of larch and birch trees, which died from long-term submersion, stand in the pond, and the blue-green water reflects the dead trees and the forest. The blue color here is not artificial. After the aluminum-rich spring water from the upstream Shirogane Onsen flows into the Biei River, it mixes with the river water to form invisible colloidal particles. These particles strongly scatter the blue light from the sun, while the white volcanic soil at the bottom of the pond makes the blue appear even more vivid. The blueness of the pond water changes with the weather, time of day, and season. You can take photos from different angles while walking along the trail by the pond. This pond is also widely known for a photograph: a work by photographer Kent Shiraishi featuring the first snow here won an award in the National Geographic Photo Contest and was subsequently selected by Apple as one of the built-in wallpapers for its computer operating system. Every winter, the pond surface freezes and is covered in snow. After nightfall, lights illuminate the dead trees and the ice, presenting a tranquil scene that is completely different from the daytime.Biei · 15.9 km from downtown

Panoramic Flower Gardens Shikisai-no-oka is a panoramic flower garden located in theBiei hills of Hokkaido, covering an area of approx. 15 hectares. The rolling slopes are planted in rotation with approx. 30 types of flowers and plants, including lavender, lupines, sunflowers, and cosmos, which bloom continuously from late spring to late fall: in summer, lavender spreads out in purple ribbons, followed by sunflowers lifting their heads, and in the fall, they are replaced by pink and white cosmos. Rows of flower ribbons spread out along the curves of the hills, looking like an open palette from a distance, and on clear days, you can even see the distant Tokachi mountain range. Giant scarecrows stand in the flower fields, and the park also keeps a herd of alpacas that you can view up close. If you get tired of walking, you can take a tractor-pulled tour vehicle to ride around the flower fields, or try an ice cream made with fresh Biei milk. In winter, the snow-covered hills transform into a snow park, where you can also experience snow activities like snowmobiling.Biei · 6.6 km from downtown

Shirahige Waterfall is a groundwater-fed waterfall on the upper reaches of the Biei River. Groundwater from theMount Tokachimountain range seeps into the ground and emerges from rock crevices halfway up the canyon cliff, cascading down the cliff face in dozens of thin streams. From a distance, it resembles a hanging white beard, which is how it got its name. The ideal viewing spot is the observation deck on the bridge spanning the Biei River. Looking over the railing, the white streams and the blue-green river below are captured in the same frame, creating an iconic composition for this view. Rich in minerals, this section of the river scatters sunlight to create a translucent blue color as it flows toward the hot spring area downstream. The waterfall has different highlights throughout the four seasons: in summer, the mountains are lush and green, making the blue-green river stand out; in fall, the forest is ablaze with color; in winter, the cliffs are covered in snow, creating a striking contrast between the white snow and the blue river. Located adjacent to the hot spring town, it offers visitors a unique natural viewing and photography experience.Biei · 18.8 km from downtown

Asahiyama Zoo is located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, and is a highly popular zoo in Japan. In the 1990s, it was on the verge of closure due to a sharp decline in visitors. However, with the concept of "behavioral exhibits," it regained popularity: the enclosures are designed according to the animals' natural instincts, allowing them to exhibit instinctive behaviors in a near-natural state. Visitors can observe them up close and unobstructed. The zoo summarizes this philosophy as "conveying life." The themed exhibition halls in the park each have their highlights. The seal pavilion features a large vertical cylindrical tank at its center, where spotted seals swim up and down - circling the tank allows full viewing, and they occasionally press against the glass to gaze at travelers. In the polar bear pavilion, polar bears tumble and dive in a massive pool, creating an impactful sight through underwater glass panels. The penguin pavilion's underwater tunnel is a signature attraction, where visitors can look up to see penguins gliding overhead like birds. At the orangutan pavilion, orangutans perform "skywalk" on ropes between towers over ten meters high, representing a classic animal behavior display. Every snowy winter, penguins walk in groups along outdoor snow paths, waddling past visitors—a signature program that has continued for years. The zoo also features feeding sessions with on-site guides, during which the animals are particularly active. After entering, check the daily schedule and allow ample time to explore at leisure.Asahikawa · 20.1 km from Biei

The Ken&Mary tree is famous for its appearance in the 1972 Nissan "Love Horizon" commercial. The male and female protagonists in the commercial are named Ken&Mary. Located in Biei, Kamikawa District, Hokkaido, Japan, the Christmas tree is a unique natural view that attracts many visitors. This solitary tree stands in the vast fields, surrounded by rolling hills, creating a serene and beautiful scene. Whether it is the lush greenery of spring and summer or the colorful hues of autumn and winter, the tree displays different natural charms. The contrast between its simple shape and the natural background makes it a classic spot for photography enthusiasts to chase light and shadow. Many people make special trips to wait for the dawn mist or the sunset glow, capturing the moment when the tree's shadow intertwines with the sky. The charm of this tree lies not only in its visual beauty but also in its thought-provoking symbolic meaning—the dialogue between the solitary tree and the wilderness interprets the resilience and poetry of the natural world.Biei · 4.2 km from downtown

Patchwork Road is a rural path flanked by rolling hills, with fields of wheat, buckwheat, potatoes, and other crops creating a colorful patchwork landscape. It features the Ken & Mary Tree, known from the Skyline car commercial, and the Seven Stars Tree, famous from the Seven Stars cigarette advertisement. These country paths are perfect for walking and cycling, leisurely enjoying the surrounding rural scenery. Around JR Biei Station, there are several bicycle rental shops. The rental fee for a regular bicycle is generally 200 yen per hour, while an electric bicycle is about 600 yen per hour, as the hilly terrain can be quite challenging. You can choose a suitable bicycle based on your ability. Car rental shops usually offer various maps and travel brochures, and some can store luggage for you, making it easy to travel light. You can also store luggage at the Shiki Information Center next to Biei Station. From JR Biei Station, take Route 237 behind the station, and follow the signs and map through the country roads to reach the Patchwork Road deep in the countryside. Cycling the entire route takes about 3-4 hours, so it's recommended to adjust the route according to your stamina. Of course, you can take a sightseeing bus to explore the picturesque scenery of Pinbu Road, but it lacks the sense of freedom and closeness to the countryside.Biei · 5.7 km from downtown

An attraction on the Patchwork Road (Biei). In 1976, this cypress tree, along with the surrounding scenery, was used for the packaging of Japan's Seven Star cigarettes, and the tree has since been known as the Seven Stars Tree. When the weather is good, the snow-capped mountains behind the Shirahige Falls will be even more beautiful. I didn’t expect that I was so lucky this time. I encountered a sunny day with super good visibility. I saw this epic beauty with my own eyes! The Shirahige Falls itself is very beautiful🥹. Coupled with the rolling snow-capped mountains in the distance🥰, it is really one of the most unforgettable moments of this trip to Hokkaido.

We also walked till closing time for this attraction, being our first full day in Hokkaido. The seals, penguins and polar bear were so close to us till we could see them very upclose. Not forgetting the hippo enclosure which was very unique with de waters and they seem to be enjoying swimming inside. The children’s playground was a pleasant surprise for the kids to take a break from walking. Too bad we missed the petting and feeding area.

In the north of Biei, Hokkaido, the road from the Ken and Mary Tree to the Seven Stars Tree is called the Patchwork Road. This patchwork path follows gentle hills and is surrounded only by fields, so the view is unobstructed. Not only the Ken and Mary tree, the Seven Stars tree and the adjacent parent-child tree, but also the Seven Stars Hill in the depths and Tokachidake in the back, are colorful, and it seems that people can see the pastoral scenery of Europe without feeling that it is In Japan, it is a tourist attraction representing Biei.
