The Mountain Resort Scenic Area

Construction of the resort began in 1703 and took 89 years to complete, spanning the reigns of the Qing emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong. This was the second political center apart from Beijing during the Qing dynasty. The mountain resort is divided into four major areas. On the south side are the palace and lake areas, and on the north side are the mountain and grassland areas. The palace and lake areas house the essence of the mountain resort. The lake area contains many examples of architecture from China's Jiangnan region just south of the Yangtze River. These are a result of the love the emperors Kangxi and Qianlong had for the Jiangnan scenery.Chengde · 5.3 km from downtown

The Putuo Zongcheng Temple is located on the north side of Shizi Valley in Hebei's Chengde City. Built in the form of Lhasa's Potala Palace by Qianlong to celebrate the life of his mother as well as his own, people still call it "Little Potala Palace." The whole temple complex is divided into two parts, front and rear. The main structure of the temple is the Dahongtai, with the Wanfa Guiyi Hall inside the primary hall of the temple. Putuo Zongcheng Temple is a gate to the mountains behind it. A mix of Qing- and Tibetan-style architecture, there is a Tibetan-style, three-round-door white entrance building upon which a five-gated, yellow-glazed tiled pavilion is built.Chengde · 7.1 km from downtown

Jinshanling Great Wall stands at the border between Luanping County of Chengde City and Miyun County of Beijing. It is named after the large and small Jinshan between Wuling Peak of Yanshan Mountain and Gubeikou Wohu Ridge. This section of the Great Wall was built along the foothills and offers a broad view. It is a beautiful, magnificent part of the Great Wall dating from the Ming Dynasty. Compared with other parts of the Great Wall, it maintains its well-preserved original appearance—simple and pure, quiet and peaceful. It is an excellent choice for visiting the Great Wall near Beijing.Luanping · 29.5 km from downtown

Puning Temple, commonly known asDafo TempleLocated on the north side of the Mountain Resort, this is one of the larger Tibetan Buddhist temples in northern China. Built during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, it was constructed by Emperor Qianlong as a Tibetan Buddhist temple for Mongol princes attending imperial assemblies. The entire temple complex features magnificent and exquisite architecture, making it ideal for visits and photography. Many eminent monks have visited and blessed this temple, making it an excellent place for prayers and blessings. Puning Temple is very large, with a depth of about 250m and a width of about 130m. It takes approx. 2 hrs to walk through the temple. The architecture is quite unique - the front courtyard features traditional Han-style buildings including a Chinese mountain gate, Heavenly King Hall, side halls, and Mahavira Hall. The rear courtyard showcases typical Xizang-style architecture, centered around the magnificent Puning Temple - Mahayana Pavilion. Here you'll find a group of buildings modeled after Xizang's famous Samye Monastery, featuring white walls and red roofs perfect for photos. Inside the temple, you can pray at various halls, usually requiring a small donation of around a few dozen yuan for incense. The highlight is the Thousand-Hand and Thousand-Eye Guanyin statue in the Puning Temple's Mahayana Pavilion at the center of the backyard. Standing over 30 meters tall, it is one of the world's largest wooden Buddha statues—both exceptionally rare and magnificent. Be sure to visit and pay your respects. Additionally, on the east side of Puning Temple is Puyou Temple, its subsidiary monastery located within the same compound. The admission ticket for Puning Temple also includes access to Puyou Temple, allowing visitors to explore both sites on foot.Chengde · 7 km from downtown

Mulan Paddock

4.7/5
673 reviews
The Mulan Hunting Grounds have been a lush grassland since ancient times, and its fame today is primarily due to the Qing Dynasty emperors and the numerous "braid dramas" (dramas featuring emperors with queues). Emperor Kangxi would go to the Mulan Hunting Grounds almost every year after the beginning of autumn to participate in the autumn hunt. Yu Qiuyu, in his book "Fifteen Years of Departure," believes that the Kangxi-Qianlong era of prosperity began with the emperor's robust health and spirit. The TV series "Scarlet Heart" also depicts Kangxi's hunting trips beyond the Great Wall. The TV series "Princess Pearl," set against the backdrop of Emperor Qianlong's reign, was even filmed at the Mulan Hunting Grounds. We've seen countless scenes of Qing emperors hunting in novels and TV dramas, and may only have a general understanding of the location of "Mulan Hunting Grounds"—north of Chengde, in the ancient "frontier region." Today, the Mulan Hunting Grounds actually cover a very large area. Heading northwest from Weichang Manchu and Mongolian Autonomous County (hereinafter referred to as Weichang County) in Chengde City, the area bordering Hebei Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region all belong to "Mulan Hunting Grounds." The Mulan Hunting Grounds mainly include four attraction : Saihanba National Forest Park, Yudao Kou Grassland Forest scenic area , and Hongsongwa Nature Reserve in Hebei Province, and Ulanbutong Grassland in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The four major attraction are roughly located as follows: Saihanba is in the middle, Yudaokou is southwest of Saihanba, Hongsongwa is northeast of Saihanba, and Wulanbutong Grassland is northwest of Saihanba. For visitors from the south, Weichang County, the starting point for visiting Mulan Weichang, is southeast of Saihanba. The attraction are quite far apart, and each attraction is large, containing many smaller attractions. Therefore, visiting Mulan Weichang requires private charter or driving yourself. The most beautiful scenery isn't necessarily within the attraction, but often along the road. Driving across the vast grasslands, you'll pass lakes, rivers, birch forests, occasionally glimpses of desert, vast fields of wildflowers, and herds of horses. You can park your car wherever you like, offering complete freedom. If private charter, choose an off-road vehicle, as the grasslands have steep slopes, potholes that can easily cause vehicles to overturn, and some areas require wading through water. The reference price is 600-700 yuan per day, which may rise to 1000 yuan per day during peak tourist peak season. The scenery here changes with the seasons. Mid-June to late September is the most beautiful time to visit Mulan Weichang, with summer for flower viewing and autumn for fall foliage. From early June to mid-August, wolfsbane flowers bloom; from late July to early August, rapeseed flowers bloom; from early July to late August, golden lotus flowers bloom; and from late August to early September, sunflowers bloom. From early to late September, the weather cools, but you can still enjoy the picturesque autumn scenery. The ever-present sunsets and stars hold back every traveler's hurried steps. Stay at least one night here, just to witness the sunsets on the grasslands and the countless stars at night. It's about 20 kilometers from the entrance to Saihanba National Forest Park.Mechanical Forest FarmUlanbutong GrasslandHongshan Military Horse FarmAccommodation is available, but conditions are limited. Even some hotels that claim to have good facilities only offer hot water for limited hours. Near the accommodations, there are usually shops selling traditional grassland food, with lamb being particularly delicious. Besides the vast grasslands, numerous rivers and lakes, and boundless forests, horseback riding is also a highlight. With the guidance of the horsemen, most visitors can probably only manage to make the horse trot, but it's still very exciting and fun. First-time visitors to Mulan Weichang may find it difficult to choose due to its vastness and numerous attractions—it's all grassland, so which area should I visit? Here are some recommended and fun spots. Saihanba National Forest Park: Qixing Lake in the attraction is a place that almost every visitors who goes to Saihanba National Forest Park will visit. It consists of seven small lakes that form a large wetland. A boardwalk has been built on the lake. Its original name was Huopaozi ("paozi" refers to a small lake formed naturally by groundwater seeping out of the grassland). It was here that Emperor Kangxi burned Galdan's grain and fodder. Yudao Kou Grassland Forest scenic area: Taoxian Lake is the most beautiful place in Yudao Kou. There is a small mountain shaped like a fairy peach on the south side of the lake. Hongsongwa Nature Reserve: The attraction is located deep in the grassland and is not frequented by many visitors. The wind turbines of the Datang Wind Power Station on the grassland are a highlight. Ulan Butong Grassland: General's Pond is a landmark attraction in Ulan Butong, famous for the Battle of Ulan Butong between Emperor Kangxi and Galdan in history. As a visitors attraction in Ulan Butong Grassland, it has relatively rich tourist facilities, but the original tranquility has been destroyed by the large number of visitors. It can be said that it is an attraction whose significance outweighs its value.BeigouIt's a worthwhile tourist attraction. As a grazing area on the Ulan Butong Grassland, the beautiful scene of "cattle and sheep appearing as the wind blows the grass low" can only be seen here, and it's also perfect for sunset photography. Ulan Butong also offers a fun paragliding experience, allowing you to enjoy a panoramic view of Ulan Butong from the air.Weichang · 47.8 km from downtown

Baili Tianlu is located in the Beijing North First Grassland Attraction in Bashang, Fengning, Hebei. It is also known as the Cloud Sky Road and the Beijing North First Sky Road. It lies like a giant dragon on the top of the mountains with an average altitude of 1,982 meters. It is 100 kilometers long. Here the sky is like a dome, the clouds are about to brush shoulders, the windmills are swaying, and the flowers are everywhere. Walking on it, people can enjoy the majestic and vastness of "viewing three towns from one mountain and reaching the sky with one's hand", as well as the excitement and experience of "four seasons in one day and different weather in a hundred miles", as if walking in a colorful and dreamy primitive painting. Souvenir the Baili Tianlu are Qiansongba National Forest Park, Yunzhong Grassland Attraction, and Rentoudun Wetland Attraction, which has grasslands, forests, wetlands, mountains, farmlands, flower fields, villages and other landscapes, and the diversity of the landscape is second to none. Most of the buildings in the Mountain Resort are destroyed, leaving only foundations. Most of what we see now is newly built. (Most visitors are retirees; perhaps because we arrived early, there were very few full-price tickets.) ⌚️: A 3-hour intensive tour only visited the core attractions, excluding the back mountain. The route was: Lizheng Gate - Yanbo Zhishuang - Yunshan Shengdi - Ruyi Boat - Yanyu Tower - Yongyou Temple - Rehe Spring - Jinshan Pavilion - Shuixin Pavilion - Dehui Gate Exit 🎫: We bought a combined ticket for the Mountain Resort and two temples (we visited the temples in the afternoon). ♥️Regarding accommodation: There are many accommodations near Lizheng Gate of the Mountain Resort. The Mountain Resort Hotel is very good, with weekend discounts. The buffet breakfast is plentiful, starting at 7 am, and you can explore the gardens immediately afterward. 🧱The Eight Outer Temples are the collective name for 12 royal Tibetan Buddhist temples in the northeastern part of the Mountain Resort; eight of them were directly managed by the Qing Dynasty's Lifan Yuan (Court of Colonial Affairs), hence the name "Eight Outer Temples" (or "Eight Temples Outside the Pass"). A World Cultural Heritage site, they are a model of the fusion of Han, Tibetan, and Mongolian architecture. • Construction Period: 1713-1780 (52nd year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign to 45th year of the Qianlong Emperor's reign) • Existing Core Sites Open to Visitors: Potala Palace (Little Potala Palace), Xumi Fushou Temple (Panchen Lama's Palace), Puning Temple, Anyuan Temple, and Pule Temple; most others are damaged and closed to the public. ✅ We selected two highlights: the Little Potala Palace and the Panchen Lama's Palace. A combined ticket (200 RMB/person) purchased with the resort is more cost-effective. 🧱 Potala Palace (Little Potala Palace, a must-see) ✅ Highlights: The largest of the Eight Outer Temples, modeled after the Potala Palace in Lhasa; the Great Red Platform + the Gilded Hall of Universal Unity, red walls and white platform, perfect for photos; from the top, you can overlook the entire city and the Summer Palace. Enjoy panoramic views of the magnificent Bangchui Mountain. ✅ Duration: 2-3 hours; Best time for photos: 3-5 pm, when the sunset illuminates the golden summit. No need to go to Lhasa, this place is perfect for taking Tibetan-style photos! 🧱Xumi Fushou Temple (Panchen Lama's Residence) ✅Highlights: Built to welcome the Sixth Panchen Lama, modeled after Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse; the Miaogao Zhuangyan Hall features eight gilded bronze dragons on its roof ridge, and the glazed pagoda on the mountaintop is a landmark. The stone carvings and murals on the four doors and eight sides of the glazed pagoda are brightly colored and exquisite! ✅This temple is not large; a visit takes about an hour. ⚠️The two temples are very close to each other, a 10-minute walk, and there is also a free shuttle bus, which is very convenient.

It was well woth booking. Ot took out the stress of finding reliable transport and buying the tickets myself. And the Jinshanling section is stunningly beautiful. You do need to be somewhat fit, but if you book this trip you are probably aware of that already, since this is part of the appeal of this section. There are plenty of people, but sometimes you are alone for minutes on end. Loved the mix.

There is no combined ticket for this attraction. You can book tickets separately on the platform. You don't need to pick up the tickets; just swipe your card to enter. Since it's not peak season, the attraction isn't crowded, so you don't need to hire a guide. You can just wander around on your own. Some of the scenery inside is quite photogenic.

Once you arrive in Fengning, you must drive the Hundred-Mile Sky Road. I've been here before in the summer, and this National Day holiday I came again, and it was absolutely stunning. There were greens, purples, and mostly golden hues—it was breathtaking. The entire route was almost entirely paved, so even sedans could drive comfortably. A perfect score! I'll definitely come back next year.
