New Harbor

4.6/5
412 reviews
New Harbor is a 17th-century canal district that retains its historic charm to this day. Colorful old townhouses and historic mansions line both sides of the canal, their vibrant facades reflecting on the water, creating a striking contrast in architectural styles. The north side is bustling with numerous bars and restaurants, making it perfect for casual gatherings, while the south side is relatively quiet. Both sides offer unique charm for photography. Several historic wooden ships are moored in the canal year-round and can be viewed up close. The fairy tale author Hans Christian Andersen once lived here, and a commemorative plaque in the district records this history. Taking a canal cruise from here is a classic way to experience the charm of the city's waterways. You can explore by walking along the canal or by taking a boat to admire the architecture from the water.Copenhagen · 1.5 km from downtown

Amalienborg Palace

Amalienborg is where the Danish royal family lives. During the reign of Christian VII in 1794, a fire broke out in Christiansborg, forcing the royal family to relocate to Amalienborg for refuge. Later, Frederick V decided to build it into a Rococo style building, so Amalienborg, which was originally four aristocratic mansions, became a magnificent palace. In honor of the king, an equestrian statue of Frederick V was built, which stands in the center of the Octagon at the Royal Palace. The four old buildings are the Palace of Christian VII built in 1754, which is now the reception hall of the royal family, the Palace of Christian VIII, the Palace of Christian IX completed in 1758, and the Philippine residence where Queen Ingrid lived. The Palace of Theresa VIII. Christian VIII's palace was officially opened in 1994, displaying objects used by the royal family until 1947. When the Queen of Denmark is in the palace, the national flag will be raised on the roof. At that time, you can know whether the Queen is in the palace in front of you. Maybe, she is quietly looking at the square with a telescope. Oh crowd. The Royal Band will depart from the palace at 11:30 in the morning and return to the palace after detouring around the old city, and will perform the changing of the guard ceremony on the square at 12:00. Don't miss out on such a special program.Copenhagen · 1.8 km from downtown

The Rosenborg Castle is a fairytale palace and one of Copenhagen's landmarks. It was purposely built in 1634 as the summer residence of Christian IV. It was designed in the Dutch Renaissance style, with bronze eaves and red brick walls being the main features. Before King Frederick IV completed Frederick Castle, three previous kings lived here. After 1883, it became the treasure house of successive kings, displaying many cultural relics such as decorations, gorgeous costumes, paintings and pottery. Here, you'll find opulent marble ceilings, priceless Dutch tapestries, lion statues cast in sterling silver, and utensils made of sterling gold. In addition, the Danish crown is also stored in the basement of the palace.Copenhagen · 1.2 km from downtown

The Little Mermaid

554 reviews
The Little Mermaid is located in Langelinie Park in the northeast of downtown Copenhagen, Denmark. It was cast by a Danish sculptor based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid." The bronze statue was unveiled in Langelinie Park in 1913. With over a century of history, it is a world-famous bronze statue and a symbol of Copenhagen, attracting countless tourists. The Little Mermaid is only 1.5m tall, about the height of a teenager. From a distance, this human-bodied, fish-tailed The Little Mermaid sits on a huge rock, looking quiet, elegant, and leisurely. If you look closer, however, The Little Mermaid appears to be a sad young girl. Visitors here can observe the facial features of The Little Mermaid in detail. This beautiful statue has had its head cut off by thieves multiple times, so the head of The Little Mermaid you see now was replaced later and is not the original. Concerned that too many tourists might damage the bronze statue, the local government relocated The Little Mermaid further out into the sea in March 2006. Today, when you come to Langelinie Park, you can only view The Little Mermaid in the water from outside the fence along the shore and take photos with it from across the fence. Please note that there are many tourists outside the fence, so please be careful when taking photos.Copenhagen · 2.7 km from downtown

In 1888, Carlsberg, the founder of Carlsberg beer, and his wife, Odilia, donated their life-long collection of artworks to establish this museum. The whole building was completed in 1897, and the appearance of the museum is gorgeous and exquisite. In order to attract the public to visit, the space and lighting here have also been specially designed, creating a quiet visiting environment. The museum mainly displays sculptures or sarcophagi of ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, Etruria, Rome and Greece.Copenhagen · 435m from downtown

The predecessor of the National Museum of Denmark was the mansion of a wealthy businessman, and later it became the residence of the Danish crown princes. In 1807, it officially became the National Museum. It houses the collections of the palace treasury since 1650 and historical materials related to Danish culture, and is also the largest museum in Denmark. The 3-story high building displays many antiquities of Danish prehistoric culture, the Viking Age, the Middle Ages, and the daily necessities and precious cultural relics of the Eskimos living in Greenland. There are also ethnic materials from the 18th to 19th centuries, and collection areas of Asian, American, African and other ethnic groups. The first floor is the Danish exhibition area. Among them, the bronze "Dorrent's Sun Carriage" from 1400 BC is a very valuable cultural relic here. It was discovered in 1902 and has precious research value.Copenhagen · 433m from downtown

Grundtvig’s Church

18 reviews
Grundtvig’s Church is one of the few Expressionist-style churches in the world. Its signature feature is the west facade: the nearly 50m-high bell tower overlaps with layered, stepped gables, its silhouette resembling a giant pipe organ pointing toward the sky. Except for the baptismal font and the roof, the entire building is constructed almost entirely of millions of handmade yellow bricks, which have a warm tone and blend seamlessly with the surrounding yellow-brick residential complex built during the same period. Stepping inside, rows of yellow brick columns rise toward the pointed arches and ribbed vaults. With almost no ornamentation, the space is simple and ethereal, looking especially moving when daylight pours down from the high windows.Copenhagen · 5 km from downtown

Frederik's Church

122 reviews
Frederik's Church is located on the same axis as Amalienborg Palace, facing it across the street. Its interior is a rare circular hall, with a massive dome over 30m in diameter supported by 12 columns. The copper-green dome stands out on the old city skyline. Standing in the center of the hall and looking up, you can see murals of the 12 apostles of Jesus on the inner wall of the dome, painted in gold on a blue background, which is quite imposing. The lower edge of the dome is decorated with a ring of symbolic reliefs, and on both sides of the Baroque altar, you can see decorations themed around verses from the Psalms. The exterior walls are surrounded by statues of prominent Danish religious and cultural figures, and the roof platform features a group of statues of figures from church history, ranging from Moses to Martin Luther. It remains a functioning parish church to this day and is a popular wedding venue for many locals. When you step inside, tread softly and take a quiet moment to look up at the dome.Copenhagen · 1.7 km from downtown

The Copenhagen Canal, whose full name is Copenhagen Newport Canal, is an artificial canal, built between 1669 and 1673, which directs seawater into King's New Square. One of the houses built on both sides of the canal can still be seen, but the shore is now a pedestrian street with many restaurants in a suitable environment. You can take a seat in the lower hall of the cruise ship, or take a walk on the deck and enjoy the city views while cruising. The canal twists and turns through Copenhagen, and every turn offers views of the city's waterfront.Copenhagen · 1.3 km from downtown

Nyhavn, Denmark is a landmark attraction in Copenhagen. It is an artificial canal built between 1669 and 1673. The canal is lined with colorful townhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries, which are rich in color and form a unique landscape. Andersen once lived here and created many classic fairy tales, adding cultural heritage to it. You can stroll and take a boat tour here to experience the rich Nordic style and cozy atmosphere.

On the way to see the Little Mermaid, I happened to catch the changing of guards at the gate of Amalienborg. Since we couldn't enter, we just watched the changing of guards for a while. The soldiers marched in unison, and the unique ceremony looked quite interesting, attracting many tourists to stop and watch.

The park is the best part of the castle. It’s stunning with lots of trees and flowers. To enter the castle, you need to buy a ticket stick to time. So it’s best to book online first. It takes about 1h to see inside of the castle.

I visited the Little Mermaid statue in Denmark on a solo trip during winter. The cold breeze from the sea and the quiet atmosphere made the experience feel even more magical. The statue itself is smaller than I expected, but its delicate expression and connection to Andersen’s fairytale give it a unique charm. Since it was off-season, there weren’t many tourists, which allowed me to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. It’s a simple yet iconic landmark worth seeing at least once.

The Glyptoteket in Copenhagen is a renowned museum that showcases an impressive collection of classical and modern art. Established in the 19th century by the Danish industrialist and philanthropist Carl Jacobsen, it houses over 10,000 works, with a focus on sculptures from Ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, as well as art from the 19th and early 20th centuries. One of the museum’s highlights is its remarkable collection of Greek and Roman sculptures, including pieces of incredible artists.

An amazing collection of artifacts from all over the world! The Viking section was the best, including the remains of the world’s longest Viking ship, an extremely well-done video of the Viking quest to reach Rome, and several rune stones.

The Organ Church is reached by taking two buses from the city center. It got this nickname because a group of decorations inside the church look like an organ. The church is not big, but it has a unique facade, high ceilings and symmetrical design. It is also very spectacular. It is a must-see attraction when visiting Copenhagen.

Frederick's Church, also known as the Marble Church, is very close to Amalienborg Church. The appearance of this green-roofed church is still very beautiful. You can visit it for free. Tourists entering the church consciously kept quiet. We also followed the local customs and quietly found a seat to sit down and quietly appreciate the church. Note that the church is open from 10:00 to 17:00 every day and 12:30 to 17:00 on Sundays.

It was good to see the town from the canal. The sound system expanded so well about the buildings and history of Copenhagen. The inside seat was warm but couldn't see properly because of the clouded window. The outside seat was good to see the seanery but it was very cold.
