Xuankong Temple is located between the cliffs of Cuiping Peak in Jinlong Gorge, Hengshan. It was built in the Northern Wei Dynasty and has a history stretching longer than 1,500 years. It is a well-preserved high-altitude wooden cliff building in China. At the foot of Hengshan, from a distance, you can see the Hanging Temple suspended over the mountainside. Yong'an Temple is a historic Buddhist temple dating back to the Jin Dynasty. After being destroyed by fire, it underwent multiple reconstructions during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. Beneath the eaves of its main hall hangs an inscribed plaque by Monk Xue'an from the early Yuan Dynasty. This site blends religion, culture, and art into a remarkable tourist destination. In 2005, it was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit (5th batch) and served as a filming location for the game Black Myth: Wukong. Yong'an Temple complex is built against the mountain with a rigorous layout, featuring the mountain gate along the central axis.Hall of Heavenly KingsThe Hall of Authentic Dharma Transmission, with the Guanyin Hall and other side halls on both the east and west sides,Sangharama HallCovering over 5,000 square meters, the complex includes the Dharma Hall, Thunder God Hall, and Guan Yu Hall. Visitors can marvel at not only the Yuan Dynasty wooden architecture and glazed tile roofs but also the exceptionally rare multi-religious Yuan Dynasty Water-Land Dharma Assembly murals. Hunyuan Ancient City is located in Hunyuan County and is a well-preserved historical ancient city. It can be reached by car from Datong City in about 1.5 hours, or you can take the Hunyuan-bound shuttle bus from Datong Bus Station. The terminal is about a 10-minute walk to the south gate of the ancient city. The core area of the ancient city is connected by stone-paved streets and alleys to the Yong'an Temple, Yuanjue Temple Brick Pagoda and other historical sites. The rare water and land murals in the Yuan Dynasty hall of Yong'an Temple need to be viewed in detail. It is recommended to follow the guide to learn the details. The Yuanjue Temple Brick Pagoda retains the Liao Dynasty style, and the wind chimes on the tower body ring lightly with the wind, which is suitable for quiet experience. Pay attention to protecting cultural relics during the tour and do not touch the ancient buildings at will. There are mostly small shops on both sides of the main street that have been transformed from traditional houses. You can try Hunyuan jelly, which is recommended to be paired with local chili oil. It is recommended to wear a sun hat in the afternoon in summer; in winter, the bluestone slabs are prone to ice, so you need to wear non-slip shoes. If you have enough time, you can combine it with a visit to the nearby Hanging Temple (separate reservation is required).Hunyuan · 800m from downtown

The Hengshan shuttle bus from the east city wall of Datong Ancient City is very convenient. It departs on time, the seats are clean, and it goes directly to the Hengshan Visitor Center, saving you the hassle of transferring. It's good value for money, and choosing it for your trip to Hengshan is worry-free 👍 and they are very responsible.

Overall, it's quite good. The Yuan Dynasty architecture has been restored to Ming and Qing Dynasty styles, and the sculptures are located in the center of Hunyuan County. Entering through the archway, there's an ancient pagoda nearby, and several halls to explore. The space is fairly large, ending at a cultural and creative shop. After exiting, you can circle back to the exit and walk back to the Drum Tower archway. The Ming Dynasty murals are fantastic. There's a well-done small museum near the exit. The cultural and creative products are just average, lacking the distinctive features of Yong'an Temple. I think it needs improvement.

The highlight is that it hides many national treasure-level ancient buildings such as the Yuan Dynasty murals of Yong'an Zen Temple and the Jin Dynasty brick pagoda of Yuanjue Temple. The ancient streets and alleys retain the original ecological atmosphere, and the cheap food experience is excellent when paired with authentic Hunyuan jelly and other cheap delicacies.

Just a few hundred meters from Yong'an Temple is Yuanjue Temple, where only this octagonal, nine-story, multi-eaved brick pagoda from the Jin Dynasty remains. The Sumeru pedestal features figures of musicians, reflecting ethnic minority characteristics. Only one level of the pagoda has open space, containing Buddha statues and murals. It is said to be poorly preserved and not open to the public. Only one small door on the first floor can be opened; the remaining four are decorative stone doors. The back of the four doors, which can be opened, features a carving of a woman opening a door. I last saw this at the Ancient Tomb Museum. Furthermore, the windows with railings on the sides are also non-openwork decorations. The small metal bird atop the pagoda is said to be the only surviving "wind-following bird" in China, still able to change direction according to the wind. I'm very curious about the type of base that supports its turning. In the 1970s, this brick tower was used as a water tower (I heard this from the guide, and there are photos in the exhibition hall, but I don't quite understand), while the current Bell Tower and Drum Tower were originally men's and women's bathhouses... There are guided tours available at the entrance for 100 yuan, lasting about half an hour.

Hengshan Mountain (formerly known as Changshan Mountain, Hengzong Mountain, etc.), located in Hunyuan County, is located in the Shanxi fault uplift zone and is a 4A scenic spot in China. The main peak of Hengshan Mountain, Tianfengling, is a typical print-style fault mountain with a layer of cliffs and a layer of green belts, and the scenery is magnificent. Hengshan Mountain has a profound Taoist cultural heritage. There are more than 60 palaces and temples around the main peak alone. Hengshan Mountain is a famous Taoist mountain. According to records, there were alchemists who made elixirs in the Western Han Dynasty in the Hengshan area. In the Tang Dynasty, a large number of temples were built for Taoists to practice. Hengshan Mountain is also the "fifth cave heaven" of the Taoist thirty-six small cave heavens.
