From a secret military bunker to a unique wine cellar! A stunning place 👍
Overall impression:
The Khareba Wine Tunnel is one of the most striking and technologically advanced locations in Kakheti. The site is astonishing in its scale: it's a colossal bunker, carved directly into the cliff face of the Caucasus Mountains in the late 1950s for civil defense purposes. It was later purchased by winemakers, as it maintains the ideal temperature for wine aging year-round—around 14°C. Today, it's almost 8 kilometers long! Only a small section of the tunnel is open to tourists.
What awaits you inside:
We took a tour and found ourselves surrounded by endless rows of oak barrels and clay qvevris where the famous Georgian wine matures.
The atmosphere is indescribable—a local ensemble performs at the entrance to the tunnel. Live music and Georgian polyphony echoed through the corridors—it was absolutely spine-tingling!
After the tour, we enjoyed a tasting of three wines with light snacks. Keep in mind: after a long journey, heat, and lack of sleep, even three glasses can leave you pleasantly, but noticeably, tipsy! 🥂🥴
After the cool of the tunnel, we took the elevator to the very top of the cliff, where there's a restaurant and observation deck with a breathtaking view of the Alazani Valley.
Helpful tips for tourists:
Clothing:
Outside, the temperature can reach over 30°C, while inside, it's a steady 14°C. If you didn't bring a jacket, don't worry: warm blankets are provided at the entrance.
Tickets:
Various packages are available. If you want to try the legendary Saperavi from a qvevri, choose the tasting with traditional Georgian wines. There are also tickets for master classes on shoti bread baking and churchkhela making.
Shopping:
Prices at the brand store near the tunnel are lower than in Tbilisi supermarkets, and the selection of rare, collectible Khareba wines is much wider. A great gift option!
Verdict: 5 out of 5. Amazing service, unique location, and a sea of emotions. A must-see!
