Songshan Battlefield Site

Songshan Battlefield Site

5.4
4.9/5
8 reviews
Songshan Battlefield Siteis located across the peaks of Songshan on the west bank of the Nujiang, next to the Burma Road, and was written into history due to the 1944 Battle of Songshan. In order to reopen the "lifeline" of the War of Resistance, the Burma Road, the Chinese Expeditionary Force fought here for over 3 months against the Japanese army, which had entrenched itself for 2 years and was heavily fortified with bunkers and secret tunnels. They launched more than 10 large-scale offensives, suffering over 7,000 casualties, and completely annihilated the more than 1,000 Japanese troops defending the mountain. Today, it is one of the best-preserved WWII battlefield sites, with hundreds of war relics remaining on the mountain; bunkers, shell craters, and foxholes can be seen everywhere among the highlands such as Big and Small Songshan and Huangtupo. The main peak, Zigao Heights, was the core position of the Japanese Songshan stronghold. The Japanese had hollowed out the mountaintop to build 2 massive fortresses over 10m deep. After the Expeditionary Force's uphill assault from Daorenping was thwarted, they switched to tunnel warfare. Combat engineers dug 2 tunnels from this former Japanese training ground directly to the bottom of the enemy fortresses, filled them with several tons of explosives, and detonated them, completely destroying them. The massive blast crater left on the surface today is the mark of that explosion. The Chinese Expeditionary Force sculpture group in front of the Battle of Songshan Monument was created and donated by sculptor Li Chunhua. The more than 400 life-sized sculptures are divided into over 10 phalanxes, including generals, child soldiers, troops stationed in India, female soldiers, soldiers in summer uniforms, soldiers in autumn/winter uniforms, artillerymen, kneeling riflemen, veterans, warhorses, and tanks, all lined up facing the old battlefield, recreating the sequence of the Expeditionary Force that crossed the border into Burma in 1942 to fight the Japanese invaders. Particularly moving is the child soldier phalanx; these young boys who lost their families in the war and followed the army to work at a young age are often remembered by visitors who silently leave candy at the feet of the sculptures. At the top of the mountain stands the tomb of the fallen soldiers of the 103rd Division of the 8th Army, erected by Division Commander Xiong Shouchun for the fallen; the "Witness Tree" on the mountain, scarred by bullets, still stands today, its trunk still clearly showing bullet holes, silently reminding future generations not to forget this history. When visiting, you can walk slowly along the trails and boardwalks laid out according to the original battlefield layout. Shell craters and foxholes are often hidden among the vegetation, so look closely to avoid missing them. When you reach the high ground near the main peak, the Nujiang, Huitong Bridge, and the winding Burma Road come into full view, allowing you to better appreciate the weight of this mountain as a "strategic chokepoint." This is also a must-visit place for many veterans of the War of Resistance and their descendants during the Qingming Festival. Parents bringing children might want to tell them the story of the child soldiers first, as it will make the experience on-site even more profound.Longling · 28 km from downtown

Drive 12 km northeast from Longling town, where County Road 193 winds through terraced tea fields, and suddenly you'll see wisps of white mist rising from the valley. Nestled within these folds of pristine vegetation lies Banglazhang Hot Spring. This isn't your typical hot spring resort, but rather a natural geothermal theater sculpted by the earth itself. The spring clusters are naturally distributed along the stream, with 16 springs forming a temperature gradient from 38°C to 96°C, creating a natural "geothermal museum." The most distinctive feature is the travertine terraces formed by sinter deposits, where spring water flows over moss-covered rocks, creating miniature waterfalls amid the alternating reddish-brown and milky-white textures. Visitors can explore various pools along the wooden boardwalk, experience wild hot-and-cold bathing under ancient walnut trees, or observe sulfur crystals painting abstract patterns on rock walls in the morning mist. Beyond the hot spring experience, a 3km forest trail connects multiple geological observation points: volcanic columnar joints, ancient geothermal vent sites, and pothole clusters formed by stream erosion. During the rainy season, you might even witness the magical sight of a double rainbow arching over the valley from the viewpoint at the trail's end. Local Lisu villagers operate an eco-teahouse serving "Thunder Tea" slow-brewed with hot spring water, paired with wild dendrobium flower snacks, adding rustic charm to your thermal spring adventure.Longling · 7.8 km from downtown

Shubao Tower

105 reviews
Shubao Tower, originally named Tiecheng Pagoda and known as "Guangmu Jielie" in the Dai language, is named after the former Dai village of Jielie where it was built. It is one of the older Dai Buddhist pagodas in Mangshi. Legend has it that the local chieftain built this pagoda during the Qing Dynasty to commemorate a military victory. The pagoda is a solid brick structure standing 11.6 m tall, with an octagonal base supporting a conical, bead-shaped body. The finial's rings and vase point toward the sky, with smaller pagodas standing at each of the four corners. The stone carvings of the mythical "Gatuo" beasts on the base still retain the traditional charm of Dai Buddhist pagodas. What truly made it famous throughout western Yunnan is the spectacle formed by the pagoda and the tree intertwined for over a century: it is said that abodhi tree seedlanded in the dust on the pagoda's top, carried by bird droppings. It took root and sprouted, with the roots cascading down the pagoda walls. Over time, they completely enveloped the entire structure. Today, the dense canopy covers the top of the pagoda like an umbrella, and the gnarled roots coil down the body. From a distance, the pagoda appears hidden within the tree; up close, the tree seems to grow from the pagoda. The tree wraps around the pagoda, and the pagoda embraces the tree, interdependent and inseparable. The bodhi tree is considered a sacred tree in Dai Buddhist culture, and a tree growing atop a pagoda adds even more significance.Mangshi · 19.9 km from Longling

It's huge, covering an entire mountain. There are shuttle buses to and from the mountain. The jungle adventure is also good, with a particularly long walkway. The package ticket includes a slide down the mountain, which is quite nice. You can get up close to the peacocks in the peacock garden, and you can buy feathers at the small shops nearby. They're cheaper than other places! 👍🏻 Apparently, there are over 10,000 peacocks inside. I saw enough on my first day; afterwards, I got tired of seeing peacocks at other attractions. 😂 It's definitely worth it. Getting a taxi is also quite convenient.

The Meng Huan Golden Pagoda is a must-see attraction in Mangshi. Its golden splendor can be seen from various parts of the city. Climbing the long steps, the pagoda's unique South Asian Dai royal palace style is visually stunning, and the view of it framed alongside the silver pagoda is unique. Inside, the Buddha statues are exquisite, and the Buddhist atmosphere is profound.

You can't go inside the Silver Pagoda, only look at it. It's a bit of a walk up from the ground. If you're not physically fit, I recommend taking the shuttle bus. It costs an extra 10 yuan for a round trip. The view from the top of the mountain is quite expansive, but it gets very crowded during holidays. Even taking photos on the glass walkway that's popular for online photos requires queuing.

The hot springs were amazing, with a waterfall and a river nearby, the water flowing beautifully. Unfortunately, they're hidden in the mountains, and when I arrived at 6:30 PM, I was all alone – all the pools were mine! 😎 Hahaha

On January 7, 2026, I finally visited this tree-encased pagoda attraction that I'd been wanting to see for so long. Admission is free. The area is quite small, and new residential buildings, all 20 stories high, are under construction nearby. I imagine they'll affect the view when they're finished. The tree is enormous; it's a Bodhi tree, and the pagoda is nestled within its trunk. The tree and pagoda are tightly integrated, completely merging into one—a truly rare spectacle. Five to ten minutes is enough for a visit and some photos.

The architectural style of Mangshi Square is unique, integrating the traditional cultural elements of the Dai and Jingpo ethnic groups. The roofs of the buildings in the square are all glowing with golden light, and the entire square presents an exotic Burmese style. These buildings are not only beautiful and generous, but also carry rich historical and cultural connotations. A good place for citizens to relax and have fun. Citizens will do morning exercises here early in the morning, and it will be more lively in the evening. Citizens will play chess and cards, dance square dances, etc. here, enjoying a leisurely time. Unlike the square dances that everyone knows in the mainland, there is no annoying noise here, but dancing to the beautiful folk music. It is not only a kind of appreciation, but you will definitely have the desire to join if you are there. There are flame trees planted around the square, and the flame flowers in autumn are really beautiful; there are also coffee shops and restaurants; there are all kinds of local delicacies in the residential area not far away, and you can eat happily in the morning or in the evening.
