4.7/5
728 reviews
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is a historic shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, and is an important center for Tenmangu shrines across Japan. Sugawara no Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu due to political strife during the Heian period and passed away there. He was later revered as the deity of learning and culture, making this a long-standing place of worship for those praying for academic success and success in exams. Upon entering the grounds, the Shinji-ike Pond and the three arched bridges spanning it form an iconic view. The pond is named for its resemblance to the character for "heart," and the three bridges symbolize the past, present, and future, respectively. Several stone statues of reclining sacred oxen are scattered throughout the grounds, reflecting the traditional connection between the ox and Sugawara no Michizane. The Tobiume (Flying Plum Tree) beside the main hall carries the legend of a plum tree that flew here from Kyoto in a single night. It is the first to bloom each year, adding vitality to the spring. The garden is planted with approx. 200 varieties and 6,000 plum trees, creating a particularly rich landscape during the blooming season, and you can also enjoy irises in early summer. Traditional festivals and cultural events are also preserved here. The Usokae ritual held every January involves exchanging wooden bird carvings to express wishes, and the Kyokusui no En (Winding Stream Banquet) is held on the first Sunday of March, where participants dressed in Heian-period attire recite poems by the flowing water, recreating the elegance of ancient banquets. After your visit, you can stroll along the approach and taste Umegae Mochi, a grilled rice cake with a crispy exterior and red bean filling, to experience the local traditional food culture.Dazaifu · 14 km from Ogori

Experience History and Culture The Kyushu National Museum has a modern and beautiful appearance, but has a quaint historical connotation. Unlike other museums that focus on the display of art, the museum in Kyushu emphasizes giving visitors an in-depth experience of history and culture. You can see a large number of historical relics here, and learn about Japan's past and how Japanese culture has gradually formed. of. Kushida Shrine has been an important guardian shrine for the Hakata area since ancient times, and locals affectionately call it "Kushida-san." The shrine is closely linked to the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival held every July, a tradition spanning hundreds of years that has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The "Oiyama" race held on the early morning of July 15 is a key part of the festival, where teams carry Yamakasa floats weighing approx. 1 ton and run along a route of approx. 5 km, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The shrine grounds feature a permanent display of ornate decorative Yamakasa floats, standing over 10m tall, whose intricate decorations showcase traditional craftsmanship and serve as a representative view. Near the entrance stands the Kushida Ginkgo tree, said to be over 1,000 years old, with lush foliage that, together with the ancient shrine buildings, evokes a profound sense of history. In early spring, the Kawazu cherry blossoms on the grounds bloom, adding a soft spring touch to the shrine. Whether you are admiring traditional architecture, learning about Hakata customs, or experiencing local festival culture, this place showcases distinct regional characteristics.Fukuoka · 25.7 km from Ogori

Marine World Umi-no-nakamichi, located in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, opened in 1989 with the concept of being "an aquarium that adults can enjoy as well." This aquarium exhibits approximately 350 species and 30,000 marine creatures. It features a beautiful exterior reminiscent of a white shell. It has four floors above ground, a site area of 48,000㎡, and a total floor space of 21,400㎡. It is one of the top five aquariums in Japan. One of the most popular attractions at Marine World Umi-no-Nakamichi is the performance show featuring dolphins and sea lions. A wide variety of dolphins, including Pacific white-sided dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and short-finned pilot whales, appear here and perform in perfect harmony with their trainers. The dolphins are particularly impressive when they jump across the pool or when the trainers perform tricks while riding on the dolphins' backs. In addition, at the end of the show, there is a unique element where the dolphins throw a ball towards the audience with their tails, making the audience feel even closer to the dolphins.Fukuoka · 34.4 km from Ogori

I was overwhelmed by the number of frogs. I empathize with the messages written inside the temple, and I am grateful that by passing through the frog's mouth, I can "rejuvenate, smile, and regain my energy"! This is definitely a temple I recommend!

One of my favorite parks placed in the city, Ohorikoen is quite massive, making it a good place for picnics, anytime strolls, jogging, and also has some swan boats for a fun ride in the lake during daytime. If you want to chill for a coffee there is Starbucks.

Kushida Shrine is a must-visit shrine when you come to Hakata. You must come to see the Gion Yamakasa. Although I didn't come in July, I didn't see the big Yamakasa in the city, but I can see the Yamakasa in Kushida Shrine. Read the introduction According to the legend of the shrine, Kushida Shrine was founded in the first year of Tenpyo Hoji (757) and has been the general guardian of Hakata since ancient times. The Hakata Festival is a representative festival of Fukuoka City and is well-known throughout the country.

Kora Taisha Shrine in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is an ancient shrine with a history of more than 1,600 years. The shrine was built near the top of Mt. Kora. Locals believe that the entire mountain is a sacred place where gods exist, and they still attach great importance to the mountain. Pass through the torii gate and climb the 131 stone steps to reach the observatory, from which you can see the entire Kurume city! It has now become a popular photo spot! The most recommended time is sunset, because Kora Taisha Shrine is built on the top of the mountain, so you can enjoy the torii gate, stone steps, sunset and night view at once. Around the summer solstice in June, you can also see the light path where the stone steps and the sunset are in a straight line.
