Marine World Umi-no-nakamichi, located in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, opened in 1989 with the concept of being "an aquarium that adults can enjoy as well." This aquarium exhibits approximately 350 species and 30,000 marine creatures. It features a beautiful exterior reminiscent of a white shell. It has four floors above ground, a site area of 48,000㎡, and a total floor space of 21,400㎡. It is one of the top five aquariums in Japan. One of the most popular attractions at Marine World Umi-no-Nakamichi is the performance show featuring dolphins and sea lions. A wide variety of dolphins, including Pacific white-sided dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and short-finned pilot whales, appear here and perform in perfect harmony with their trainers. The dolphins are particularly impressive when they jump across the pool or when the trainers perform tricks while riding on the dolphins' backs. In addition, at the end of the show, there is a unique element where the dolphins throw a ball towards the audience with their tails, making the audience feel even closer to the dolphins.Fukuoka · 15.6 km from Sasaguri

Kushida Shrine has been an important guardian shrine for the Hakata area since ancient times, and locals affectionately call it "Kushida-san." The shrine is closely linked to the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival held every July, a tradition spanning hundreds of years that has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The "Oiyama" race held on the early morning of July 15 is a key part of the festival, where teams carry Yamakasa floats weighing approx. 1 ton and run along a route of approx. 5 km, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The shrine grounds feature a permanent display of ornate decorative Yamakasa floats, standing over 10m tall, whose intricate decorations showcase traditional craftsmanship and serve as a representative view. Near the entrance stands the Kushida Ginkgo tree, said to be over 1,000 years old, with lush foliage that, together with the ancient shrine buildings, evokes a profound sense of history. In early spring, the Kawazu cherry blossoms on the grounds bloom, adding a soft spring touch to the shrine. Whether you are admiring traditional architecture, learning about Hakata customs, or experiencing local festival culture, this place showcases distinct regional characteristics.Fukuoka · 11.3 km from Sasaguri

The lake was originally the moat of the Fukuoka Castle Ruins. The park opened in 1929, and the lake covers approx. half of the park's area. Nakanoshima Island is connected by several bridges, and the Ukimido Hall on the island is a representative view. The walking path around the lake is approx. 2 km long, making it suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling. Boat rental facilities are available by the lake, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery of the lakeshore and islands from the water. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom along the lake, while in winter, water birds often stop by. The park also features a Japanese garden, the Fukuoka Art Museum, and a Noh theater. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

4.7/5
728 reviews
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is a historic shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, and is an important center for Tenmangu shrines across Japan. Sugawara no Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu due to political strife during the Heian period and passed away there. He was later revered as the deity of learning and culture, making this a long-standing place of worship for those praying for academic success and success in exams. Upon entering the grounds, the Shinji-ike Pond and the three arched bridges spanning it form an iconic view. The pond is named for its resemblance to the character for "heart," and the three bridges symbolize the past, present, and future, respectively. Several stone statues of reclining sacred oxen are scattered throughout the grounds, reflecting the traditional connection between the ox and Sugawara no Michizane. The Tobiume (Flying Plum Tree) beside the main hall carries the legend of a plum tree that flew here from Kyoto in a single night. It is the first to bloom each year, adding vitality to the spring. The garden is planted with approx. 200 varieties and 6,000 plum trees, creating a particularly rich landscape during the blooming season, and you can also enjoy irises in early summer. Traditional festivals and cultural events are also preserved here. The Usokae ritual held every January involves exchanging wooden bird carvings to express wishes, and the Kyokusui no En (Winding Stream Banquet) is held on the first Sunday of March, where participants dressed in Heian-period attire recite poems by the flowing water, recreating the elegance of ancient banquets. After your visit, you can stroll along the approach and taste Umegae Mochi, a grilled rice cake with a crispy exterior and red bean filling, to experience the local traditional food culture.Dazaifu · 11.4 km from Sasaguri

Kushida Shrine is a must-visit shrine when you come to Hakata. You must come to see the Gion Yamakasa. Although I didn't come in July, I didn't see the big Yamakasa in the city, but I can see the Yamakasa in Kushida Shrine. Read the introduction According to the legend of the shrine, Kushida Shrine was founded in the first year of Tenpyo Hoji (757) and has been the general guardian of Hakata since ancient times. The Hakata Festival is a representative festival of Fukuoka City and is well-known throughout the country.

One of my favorite parks placed in the city, Ohorikoen is quite massive, making it a good place for picnics, anytime strolls, jogging, and also has some swan boats for a fun ride in the lake during daytime. If you want to chill for a coffee there is Starbucks.

This is a shrine that worships Sugawara no Michizane, a man of letters from the Heian period of Japan, as the god of learning. It is said that it helps you pass exams and achieve success, and that it helps you maintain good health. It is a very famous shrine!

This place is truly worth visiting repeatedly; each visit offers a different experience. The scenery changes with the seasons, so there's always a surprise no matter when you come. The overall pace is leisurely, perfect for letting go of all the hustle and bustle and slowly appreciating the beauty around you. The local atmosphere is vibrant, and you can feel the unique warmth and life of the place. After coming here, I realized that the best scenery isn't about crowded hotspots, but rather this kind of comforting and reassuring atmosphere. Highly recommended!
