Flaming Mountain Scenic Area

The Flaming Mountain Scenic Area is a Turpan attraction famous for its crimson sandstone landform. Stretching approximately 100 km east-west, it is called "Kiziltag" (meaning "red mountain") in Uyghur and was historically known as "Volcano Mountain" during the Tang Dynasty due to its extreme heat. Located along the northern Silk Road in ancient Gaochang Kingdom territory, its barren, crimson ridges appear like rising flames under the scorching sun. Combined with its association with Journey to the West's "Three Borrows of the Banana Fan" episode set here, Flaming Mountain has become a must-visit Turpan destination. The attraction features underground and aboveground sections: visitors typically start with the underground gallery-style exhibition hall, whose ceiling mimics the sky with decorative lighting, housing themed zones like the Journey to the West cultural corridor, Flaming Mountain geographical exhibit, and Gaochang historical figures hall, offering insights into the mountain's formation and ancient Gaochang history. The true highlight lies aboveground—vibrant red cliffs create spectacular photo opportunities under sunlight, while Journey to the West character sculptures (Tang Monk, Bull Demon King, Princess Iron Fan, etc.) dot the plaza. A landmark giant thermometer shaped like the Monkey King's staff displays real-time ground temperatures. Summer brings extreme heat, with ground temperatures often reaching 60–70°C or higher, making midday visits particularly challenging. Bring ample water, sun hats, sunglasses, and scarves for sun/dust protection, and avoid afternoon peak heat. Exploring the entire attraction takes about one to two hours at a leisurely pace, with most time recommended for the striking aboveground views.Turpan · 26.8 km from downtown

“Kumtag” means “Sand Mountain” in the Uyghur language. The Kumtag Desert is formed by the tempestuous winds from Tianshan's Qijiaojing Wind Gap and the Dabancheng Wind Gap. After a long journey, the sand that has been carried in the wind collides and deposits in the Kumtag area, forming a desert with various sand dunes. The Kumtag Desert has been developed into a scenic area integrating scientific research, investigation, exploration, sand sports and desert tourism. Looking south from the old town of Shanshan, the golden desert rolls endlessly into the horizon. For thousands of years, the desert and the oasis have coexisted like royal lovers.Shanshan · 23.5 km from downtown

Long ago, Village Chief Ali led the villagers through countless hardships and finally dug the first karez in the village. A grand celebration was held on the day water flowed through it. Chief Ali invited many guests from afar, treating them to enthusiastic song and dance, delicious snacks, and abundant fruits. He also invited the guests to visit this newly flowing spring of life—the karez—hoping they would spread far and wide the spirit of unity, cooperation, and relentless self-improvement embodied by the karez. 1. Park entrance: You can change into the guest invited by village head Ali, receive a brocade bag, and then pass through the door of time to enter the Karez Folklore Garden. 2. Welcome square: You can greet village chief Ali and stop to enjoy the wonderful song and dance performance he brings to everyone. 3. Tail-end reservoir of karez: Village Chief Ali in his youth was diligently digging the karez, accompanied by his beautiful wife. Your time-transcending conversation with Chief Ali filled him with excitement. 4. Celebration square: With live accompaniment from the band, you danced the nazkum with a group of young villagers and encountered the defeated "fake village head," allowing you to experience the humor and wit of Turpan. 5. Museum: The village head gathered the tools used for digging karez wells and built a karez museum. Villagers demonstrate how to use these tools while sharing interesting stories about how the village head led them in digging the karez. 6. Open channel bridge: On a small bridge over the karez open channel, you encountered the village head Ali's youngest daughter. She tilted an earthen jar to cleanse your hands with pure water of life, and her beautiful, innocent smile moved you deeply. 7. Dragon head dotting: After passing through the open channel, underground channel, and vertical shaft, you arrived at the karez dragon head area. An aunt held an earthen bowl and dotted your forehead with the water of life, making you feel the grandeur of the sacred Tianshan Mountains. 8. Art gallery: As you ascend from Longkou to the ground-level art gallery, you'll see villagers demonstrating handicrafts, playing traditional instruments, and singing and dancing gracefully. If you actively participate, you might receive an ancient coin reward from the villagers. 9. Happy bazaar: After you check in by taking photos in the grape-drying house adorned with colorful grapes, you enter the lively bazaar. There are shopkeepers singing their sales pitches, handsome men and beautiful women strolling through the market streets, villagers performing flash mobs among the crowd, wandering musicians playing as they walk, and Village Chief Ali delivering passionate speeches. You immerse yourself in that era and scene, interacting with numerous NPCs like shopkeepers, villagers, and musicians. You redeem items with ancient coins, enjoy discounts, or draw mystery boxes while savoring delicacies, shopping for goods, singing, dancing, and checking in. Then you step under the cool grape trellis to leisurely enjoy tea, chat, and taste fruits. 10. Treasure chamber: After exploring the bazaar, you enter the rarely opened private treasure chamber of village chief Ali. Here, you can admire his various precious collections accumulated over the years and participate in the small-scale rare items auction he hosts. You might be lucky enough to find a treasure or receive a gift from the chief. 11. You passed by Anarhan's home and left reluctantly, without having time to bid farewell to village chief Ali. But perhaps you'd like to stay longer, spend a night at Anarhan's place, and enjoy a uniquely fragrant barbecue feast.Turpan · 3.2 km from downtown

Situated to the west of the city of Turpan, Yarkhoto (also called Jiaohe) is a city which flourished during the Southern and Northern Dynasties through to the Tang Dynasty. Later, due to years of war, the city was abandoned and became a ruin. It is a relatively complete urban relic. The ruins of Yarkhoto are divided into temples, houses, and government offices. All the structures are made with rammed earth. Today these ruins of once magnificent rammed earth buildings give Yarkhoto its sense of historicity. It is a good place for photography. There is no clear route to follow when visiting the Yarkhoto Ruins. Take a walk and take photos as you please.Turpan · 9.9 km from downtown

On the vast Gobi oasis, you can see many raised sand hills, arranged in an orderly manner and extending to the south. They are the vertical wells of the Karez, and below them are the Karez underground channels. The Karez is composed of four parts: vertical wells, underground channels, open channels, and flood dams. The Karez is an ancient water conservancy project that uses local geographical, hydrogeological and topographical conditions to bring groundwater to the surface without any power.Turpan · 6.3 km from downtown

Jiaoheyi was an important post station on the Silk Road during the Tang Dynasty. The Jiaoheyi Attraction is equipped with: post station meeting hall, post station house, horse caravan, beacon tower, Karez source, world's largest drying room, grape corridor, etc. The Attraction presents this period of history in multiple forms, reproducing the ancient way of transmitting information through the five scenes of Chang'an City, Jingzhao Post Station, Liangzhou Post Station, Yumen Pass, and Jiaohe Post Station. The glory of the Silk Road post station is condensed here. Due to the dry climate, little rain and lack of water in Turpan, the local working people of all ethnic groups creatively guided groundwater to the surface for irrigation and domestic water use, which is called "Kanerjing", meaning "well hole". There are 1,784 Karez in Xinjiang with a total length of 5,272 kilometers. There were 1,237 Karez in Turpan in history, and only 214 Karez with water are still there. Karez is composed of four parts: vertical well, culvert, open channel and reservoir. The Karez in Jiaoheyi Scenic Attraction is called "Keqike Aji" Karez, which has a history of more than 570 years. The diameter of the Karez Source Scenic Area is 20 meters. You can take the sightseeing elevator directly to the source of the 50-meter-deep Karez and experience firsthand the "underground canal" created by the ancients with just a shovel, a pickaxe and a basket. It is known as one of the three great human projects in ancient China, along with the Great Wall and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.Turpan · 7.9 km from downtown

There were so many people visiting during the National Day holiday. 90% of the grapes had already been harvested; the remaining 10% were quite unique. However, the sightseeing bus service was extremely chaotic, with pedestrians everywhere and no order whatsoever.

Its core visual impact lies in its crimson mountains, which from a distance truly resemble a fiery dragon lying across the Gobi Desert. Especially at dusk, when the setting sun casts its rays, the fiery red of the mountains is completely ignited, creating stunning photographs. The awe-inspiring nature of this landscape is unique, and it is difficult for other parts of Xinjiang to replicate this extreme desolate beauty where "not a blade of grass grows."

The last stop on my trip to Turpan was a desert sunset tour. I ended up taking shuttle buses number one and two, which were quite a long journey. Instead, I ended up just driving around the desert, seeing all sorts of cars stuck in the sand and experiencing traffic jams. It was a bit of a shame that there was a fireworks display on National Day, so I had to make it to my next stop.

Visited on 04/09/2026. Review: Very nice and informative! You will have the opportunity to understand this historic achievement and other interesting facts through statues and tool representations. Transportation: you can take the bus (5 RMB) and then get off at a bus station within close proximity to the attraction. After, you will need to walk there.

On the way to Tuyugou, I was captivated by the natural scenery of the canyon. Tuyugou is a village nestled within the canyon, with architecture that strongly reflects local characteristics. Strolling through the village is very relaxing and pleasant. The Tuyugou Grottoes were carved during the Gaochang period, and climbing them requires some physical exertion.

Like the tour of Jiaohe Ancient City, this one was also guided by Guli. She called in the morning to confirm the time and arrived four hours early to wait for us – incredibly reliable! Guli has over ten years of experience, her pacing is just right, and it's suitable for families with elderly members.

A long time ago when I visited Turpan, there was only one attraction related to the Karez irrigation system. Now, three have been developed: the Karez Well Park, the Karez Well Folk Culture Park, and the Karez Well Source. My chartered driver recommended this one; it's quite deep, but there's an elevator down. It's worth a look for basic information.

How to put it? Only people who are very interested in history can understand it. Those who know nothing about this history will only see ruins. You need cultural background and historical knowledge to understand the cultural value behind it.
