Maoling Mausoleum of Emperor Wu of Western Han

4.5/5
68 reviews
Maoling Mausoleum of Emperor Wu of Western Han is a historic imperial tomb attraction located in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province. As one of the most grand and well-preserved representatives of ancient Chinese imperial tombs, it serves as the final resting place of Emperor Wu of Han, Liu Che. This significant site not only provides crucial insights into Han Dynasty history but also offers visitors a window into the glorious culture of the Han era. Maoling Mausoleum of Emperor Wu of Western Han is renowned for its majestic tomb structure and abundant burial artifacts. Visitors can explore the tomb's layout and learn about the burial customs and architectural styles of the Han Dynasty. The museum within the mausoleum displays numerous precious cultural relics, including gold and silver artifacts, pottery figurines, and stone carvings, which vividly recreate the social landscape and artistic achievements of the Han Dynasty. Through multimedia displays and interactive experiences, visitors can gain an in-depth understanding of Emperor Wu's life and the political, economic, and cultural accomplishments of the Han Dynasty. Professional guided tour services help visitors better comprehend the historical stories behind the exhibits. Maoling Mausoleum of Emperor Wu of Western Han boasts seven "extremes": First, its construction period was exceptionally long, spanning 53 years. Second, its scale was enormous, with over 400 identified burial pits discovered so far. Third, it contained an extraordinary number of burial objects—so many that by the time Emperor Wu was interred, the tomb could hold no more, as historical records state it was "unable to accommodate another item." Fourth, its construction costs were astronomical, consuming one-third of the annual tax revenue during Emperor Wu's reign. Fifth, the mausoleum's surrounding city was remarkably prosperous. Sixth, the burial complex was vast, with dozens of distinctive satellite tombs. Seventh, the main mausoleum structure itself was exceptionally grand, standing out among the eleven imperial tombs of the Western Han Dynasty. As noted by renowned historian Wu Bolun with wit: Maoling Mausoleum of Emperor Wu was essentially an "over-the-limit construction project" of its time. Moreover, the natural surroundings of Maoling Mausoleum of Emperor Wu of Western Han are equally enchanting, with tree-lined paths and a tranquil atmosphere offering visitors an ideal place to unwind. Whether you're a history enthusiast, cultural researcher, or family traveler, the mausoleum provides every visitor with an unforgettable cultural exploration experience.Xingping · 8.7 km from downtown

History background: Shaanxi History Museum is located in the northwest of the Dayan Pagoda in Xi'an. It is one of the landmark attractions of Xi'an. The museum was planned in 1983, started in the summer of 1986, and officially opened on June 20, 1991. It was named Shaanxi History Museum. In 2016, Shaanxi History Museum was selected as "China's 20th Century Architectural Heritage" by the Chinese Cultural Relics Society and the Chinese Architectural Society. Museum Features: Shaanxi History Museum is a large modern museum, and its completion marks a new milestone in the development of China's museum industry. This museum is a Tang-style building complex with a "central hall and four corner towers". The main and secondary buildings are well-organized, the heights are staggered, and the momentum is solemn. It integrates national traditions, local characteristics and the spirit of the times. The museum covers an area of 65,000 square meters, and houses more than 380,000 cultural relics ranging from simple stone tools used in the initial stage of ancient humans to various artifacts in social life before 1840, covering a time span of more than one million years. The cultural relics are not only numerous and diverse, but also of high quality and wide value. The collections in the museum are dazzling and exquisite. It is an art hall that showcases the history and culture of Shaanxi and ancient Chinese civilization, and is known as the "Pearl of the Ancient Capital, the Treasure House of China." There are many treasures in the museum, including bronzes from the Shang and Zhou dynasties, pottery figurines from various dynasties, gold and silver utensils from the Han and Tang dynasties, and murals from Tang tombs. Most of them are treasures from the prosperous periods of the Han and Tang dynasties, and some of them are fine items that are prohibited from leaving the country. Collection treasures: There are three exhibition halls in the center of the museum. The first exhibition hall displays cultural relics from the prehistoric civilization of Lantian ape-man 1.15 million years ago to the Qin Dynasty; the second exhibition hall displays cultural relics from the Han Dynasty and the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties; and the third exhibition hall is mainly cultural relics from the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Each exhibition hall has its own treasure. There are special exhibition halls on the east and west sides of the central hall. On the west side, there is a "Special Exhibition of Tang Dynasty Treasures (Treasure Hall, Cultural Relics Unearthed in Hejiacun)", where many fine gold and silver wares from the heyday of the Tang Dynasty were transferred to be exhibited. On the east side, there is a "Treasures of Tang Dynasty Murals Exhibition", which exhibits a number of authentic Tang Dynasty tomb murals. The tripod The tripod is placed in the first exhibition hall at the entrance of the museum, and it can be said to be the treasure of the first exhibition hall. The replica is placed here, and the original is kept in the warehouse. Inscription on the outer wall: The inscription "All under heaven is the king's land; all the people are the king's subjects" reflects the land ownership system in the Western Zhou Dynasty. There are four lines of inscriptions with 28 characters on the inner wall of the Yi Ding. The general meaning is: In early August of a certain year, Wang Jiang took back the land originally given to Shi Lu and gave it to Yi, who then made this tripod to commemorate it. Queen's Seal: One of the treasures worth seeing in the second exhibition hall is the jade seal of the empress of the Han Dynasty, which is displayed separately. The seal is made of Xinjiang Hetian mutton-fat jade and is engraved with a Chihu, symbolizing royal power. Three-color camel figurines carrying music: This world-famous tri-color camel figurine carrying music is located in the third exhibition hall of Shaanxi History Museum. Its overall appearance and color are well preserved. There are seven men sitting on the camel's back, holding different musical instruments in their hands. Among them, the figurine holding the clapboard is listening attentively, as if intoxicated by the wonderful music. The woman in the middle is performing, and the camel opens its mouth wide and looks up to the sky, as if it is also singing with its master. Gold-inlaid animal head agate cup: This cultural relic, located in the special exhibition "Tang Dynasty Relics Special Exhibition", is one of the first 64 national treasures listed by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage that are never allowed to be exhibited abroad. There are also many other treasures such as black-glazed oil-drip bowls, green-glazed porcelain pots with handles, gilded silver bamboo-joint copper incense burners, gold bowls with mandarin duck and lotus petal patterns, and so on.Xi'an · 43.5 km from Xingping

The Maoling Museum - Huo Qubing Tomb is located approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Xingping City and about 1 kilometer northeast of Emperor Wu of Han's Maoling Mausoleum. Huo Qubing died at the young age of 23. To commemorate his military achievements, Emperor Wu of Han built his tomb northeast of Maoling as a secondary burial site. According to records, the tomb of Huo Qubing at Maoling Museum was "built to resemble the Qilian Mountains," intended to commemorate his outstanding military achievements in the Hexi Corridor and the Qilian Mountains region. In China, only generals who made great military contributions could have such a tomb built. It is said that after his death, Emperor Wu of Han was deeply saddened and mobilized the Xuanjia Army, arranging them in formation along Chang'an all the way to Huo Qubing's tomb in Maoling. The Maoling Museum's Tomb of Huo Qubing is surrounded by craggy rocks and verdant pines and cypresses, creating a secluded and tranquil mountain forest scene. At the east and west corners of the tomb, winding paths lead to the top. Huge stones are piled on the earthen mound, and stone figures and beasts are placed in front of the tomb. Among them, the "Horse Trampling the Xiongnu" is the main stone carving in front of the tomb, measuring 1.9 meters long and 1.68 meters high. Carved from grayish-white fine sandstone, the stone horse stands with its head held high, its long tail trailing on the ground. Beneath its belly is a carved image of a Xiongnu man, long-bearded, holding a bow and arrow, struggling with a furrowed brow. It is a representative monumental work. Because of this sculpture, the Maoling Museum - Huo Qubing Tomb is considered more popular than the tomb of his uncle, Wei Qing.Xingping · 9.8 km from downtown

Xi'an City Wall is a landmark of this ancient city. The city walls that we see now were built in the early years of the Ming dynasty and they are now more than 600 years old. The walls were built on the foundations of the imperial city of the Tang Dynasty and they are formed together with a series of defensive installments such as moats and turrets. At present, Xi'an City Wall can be accessed by many city gates. Visitors can choose the nearest one to them. The South Gate is the visitor entrance of Xi'an City and is also the city gate with more tourists. Cycling on the ancient walls is a good experience. Riding on the wall overlooking the ancient capital of the thirteenth dynasty, you will have a feeling of travelling through time.Xi'an · 42 km from Xingping

Xi'an Museum

Xi'an Museum is a modern comprehensive museum built upon the cultural relic protection site—the ruins of the Tang Dynasty Jianfu Temple and its iconic structure, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda. It integrates cultural relic collection and protection, academic research, exhibition and display, social education, and garden leisure. Its core area is the location of the original Tang Dynasty royal temple, Jianfu Temple, while the precious and striking historical relic existing within the temple—the Small Wild Goose Pagoda—has become the museum's unique landmark and soul. Therefore, the Jianfu Temple ruins and the Small Wild Goose Pagoda are not only the foundation and core carrier for the establishment of Xi'an Museum, but also important outdoor historical exhibition areas and focal points for visitors. The main building of the museum is located on the north side of the ancient temple ruins. The three elements (ancient temple ruins, ancient pagoda, and modern museum building) are organically integrated, jointly forming a unique cultural space that combines "museum, pagoda, temple, and garden," vividly showcasing the historical context of Xi'an from ancient times to the present. Xi'an Museum officially opened to the public on May 18, 2007. Its establishment aims to comprehensively showcase the glorious history and splendid culture of Xi'an (ancient Chang'an) as the capital of thirteen dynasties, filling the gap of a comprehensive museum of Xi'an's urban history. Collection highlights: The museum houses over 100,000 precious cultural relics from various historical periods of Xi'an. The collection spans from prehistoric times to the Ming and Qing dynasties, with particular emphasis on artifacts from the prosperous dynasties of Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang, including bronze ware, jade articles, gold and silverware, ceramics, murals, stone steles, epitaphs, and Buddhist statues, systematically reflecting the political, economic, cultural, social life, and foreign exchanges of the ancient capital Chang'an. Main exhibition: The permanent exhibition "Ancient capital Xi'an" takes the urban development history of Xi'an as the main thread, showcasing the evolution and achievements of Xi'an as a capital (Zhou Fenghao, Qin Xianyang, Han Chang'an, Sui-Tang Chang'an) and a prefectural city (Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties) through a large number of precious cultural relics, models, charts, and multimedia means. Unique environment: The museum's greatest feature lies in its surroundings. Travelers can not only visit modern exhibition halls but also stroll through the expansive heritage park encompassing the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, the ancient architectural complex of Jianfu Temple (including structures like the Ming dynasty bell tower housing a Jin dynasty ancient bell), an ancient stone sculpture art exhibition area, and garden views—experiencing the charm of the millennia-old capital at its historical site. The view of "morning bells at the Wild Goose Pagoda" is particularly renowned. Functional positioning: The museum is not only an important center for cultural relic collection, research, and display, but also an urban cultural park where citizens can relax, entertain, and immerse themselves in history and culture, undertaking significant social education and cultural exchange functions.Xi'an · 42 km from Xingping

The Xi'an Bell Tower features a typical Ming Dynasty architectural style, with a square brick-and-stone base at the bottom and a triple-eaved pyramidal roof structure at the top, covered with dark green glazed tiles. The gilded pinnacle at the roof's apex is particularly striking under sunlight. Each side of the base has a central arched doorway approx. 6 m high, which were interconnected and once served as passageways for the intersection of four major streets—east, south, west, and north—allowing pedestrian and vehicular traffic. These doorways are now sealed, with a traffic roundabout built around them and an underground pedestrian passage. The entrance to the Xi'an Bell Tower is located within this underground passage, accessible via a spiral staircase. Inside the tower, there is a replica of the "Jingyun Bell," whose original was cast in the second year of Emperor Ruizong's Jingyun era (711 AD) during the Tang Dynasty and is now housed in the Xi'an Beilin Museum. Standing on the Xi'an Bell Tower, you can see the four main streets extending east, south, west, and north from the Xi'an Bell Tower. Worth a visit; it's serene and solemn. Seeing the place where Emperor Wu of Han lies, and imagining his heroic exploits during his conquest of the empire, is especially moving. Paying homage to the tomb of Huo Qubing, a young hero of history, evokes profound emotions.

Emperor Wu of Han's Maoling Mausoleum & Maoling Museum It's very convenient to get there by car, with a large and easy-to-park parking lot. Following the order of visiting the mausoleum area first, then the museum, the route is very smooth. The mausoleum area is magnificent, allowing you to feel the profound history of the Western Han Dynasty imperial tombs. The museum's highlights include the Huo Qubing Tomb stone carvings and other national treasures like the "Horse Trampling the Xiongnu," which are truly impressive. The exhibits are also very rich. Overall, it wasn't crowded, making for a quiet and comfortable experience. However, the sun is quite strong in the mausoleum area, so sunscreen is recommended. It's well worth a visit for history and culture enthusiasts, offering good value for money.

This was a special treat for my zodiac year. Although I've lived in Xi'an for years, I've never been before. It's definitely not comparable to Disneyland, but the rides were enough for the kids. It was quite crowded during the Spring Festival, with long queues for the bumper cars and log flume. We played from noon until dark. The only downside was the limited dining options and the poor value for money. We also happened to catch a fireworks show during the Spring Festival.

Climbing the wall feels like stepping into history. Every brick and tile on the wall tells the story of past battles and how the wall was used for offense and defense against foreign enemies.

If you love Ancient Chinese History, this is a place to go. Smooth and easy walk around. Despite the crowd the overall experience here was wonderful. Huge place to explore. Nice stroll around will take about 2 to 3 hours.

We traveled a long way to see Qizai, and the little guy was amazing, giving us so much face! I'm so happy! There's also the Zhao Gongming Ancestral Temple nearby; those who want to get rich should definitely visit! 😏
