Yunnan Provincial Museum

The Yunnan Provincial Museum is a comprehensive museum showcasing Yunnan's history and ethnic culture, housing over 200,000 cultural relics (sets), with strengths in ancient Dian Kingdom bronzeware, Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom Buddhist statues, and historical calligraphy and paintings. The building itself is distinctive: its reddish-brown exterior is composed of irregular stone prism shapes, resembling a stone forest rising from the ground, making it memorable even before entering the exhibition halls. The permanent exhibition follows a chronological sequence, with six themed halls—"Ancient Yunnan," "Dawn of civilization," "Dominance in southern China," "Land of fragrant Buddhism," "Frontier expansion and defense," and "A century of upheaval"—taking visitors from prehistoric times to the modern era, offering a condensed overview of Yunnan's history. Located in a multi-ethnic border region, the artifacts here differ markedly from those in inland museums: bronzeware depicts vivid scenes of animal combat, rituals, and warfare, while the Dian Kingdom's unique shell containers resemble lidded bronze "piggy banks." The Buddhist statues bear the distinct regional style of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms, warranting closer attention. The museum's crown jewels deserve dedicated viewing time: the Warring States period bronze ox-tiger table, unearthed from the Lijiashan tombs in Jiangchuan, features a small ox hidden beneath a large ox and a fierce tiger biting the ox's tail, earning the saying "In the north, there's the galloping horse treading on a flying swallow; in the south, there's the ox-tiger bronze table." The Dali Kingdom gilded Avalokitesvara statue with silver halo from the Qianxun Pagoda of Chongsheng Temple in Dali has a unique golden form. Other treasures include Song Dynasty Guo Xi's "Travelers among mountains and streams," Yuan Dynasty Huang Gongwang's "Visiting Dai in Shanxi," and the Ming Dynasty gem-inlaid golden crown. After the visit, you can stop by the nearby Guandu ancient town, making it possible to explore both sites in a day.China · Kunming

Shuhe Ancient Town is located in the ancient city of Lijiang, which is the northwestern part of Dayan Ancient City. It is an important station on the ancient tea-horse road. The structural layout of the ancient town is similar to that of the Dayan Ancient City. There are many ancient buildings, and there are clear small rivers between the roadways. The environment is very beautiful. Walking in the ancient town, you can still feel the prosperity of its past. The Tea Horse Road Museum has a wealth of historical information to impart and is well worth seeing.Lijiang · 60.4 km from Yongsheng

Tengchong Beihai Wetland National AAAA-level attraction is located 12.5km northeast of Tengchong City, Yunnan Province. It is the only volcanic barrier lake floating carpet wetland in China. The attraction is surrounded by mountains. It is a subtropical volcanic rock barrier lake formed by the eruption of Cenozoic volcanoes 600,000 years ago. The nutrient-rich volcanic ash has nurtured a large area of meadows floating on the water, forming a colorful giant floating carpet on the water. The wetland is famous for its biodiversity due to its three-dimensional ecosystem composed of alpine forests, floating carpets on the water surface and barrier lakes. It is known as the "Kidney of the Earth" and "Gene Bank of Wetland Species". More than 300 years ago, Xu Xiake, a traveler in the Ming Dynasty, visited here in person. In his "Yunnan Travel Diary", he left a description of the magical landscape of Beihai Wetland: "The lake is as large as a thousand acres, with green weeds in the middle, and the bottom is like floating grass. There are also streams running through it, but they cannot rise." The altitude here is 1,750 meters, with negative oxygen ions as high as 16,000/cubic centimeter, and PM2.5 less than 10 all year round. It is a world-recognized longevity and livable altitude zone. It is a good place for you to escape the heat and cold, enjoy beautiful scenery and fresh oxygen, and have a good vacation. You can take a small boat and bamboo raft to roam in the water, feel the company of fish, shrimps and birds, the breeze is gentle, the water is calm, and you are at ease. Here you can experience grass rafts, stepping on grass, stepping on fish, grilling fish, etc., and enjoy the fun of nature. There is a floating water plank road here, allowing you to get closer to many precious birds and exotic flowers and plants in the wetland, including the blue-headed duck known as the "giant panda among birds", the "giant panda among plants" Brasenia schrenkiana and hundreds of other rare animals and plants, and experience the vivid fun of the natural classroom. Here, you can experience the unique four-season experience of "appreciating the romance of irises in spring", "enjoying the coolness of the sea of clouds in summer", "shooting the colorful sea of flowers in autumn", and "watching the flock of migratory birds in winter", and enjoy the beautiful encounter between the mountains and the sea in the Beihai Wetland.China · Tengchong

Dali Ancient City

4.7/5
9.7k reviews
Dali Ancient City is nestled against the Cangshan Mountain and faces the Erhai Lake. This area was once the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom and the Dali Kingdom. The preserved city layout mainly inherits from the reconstruction of the Dali Prefecture during the Ming Dynasty. Bai ethnic courtyards with white walls and blue tiles spread out along the chessboard-like streets. Locals spend their leisure time gardening, basking in the sun, and chatting, creating a slow-paced lifestyle that distinguishes this ancient city from many imitation historic districts. You can start your exploration from the south gate tower during the day, where the characters "Dali" on the wall serve as a popular photo backdrop. Climbing the tower offers a panoramic view of dark-tiled rooftops and distant Cangshan Mountain. Fuxing Road, extending north from the south gate, is the ancient town's central pedestrian street, lined with shops in Ming and Qing styles displaying marble carvings, tie-dye fabrics, silverware, and ethnic costumes. Wuhua Tower at the intersection, originally built during the Nanzhao period and rebuilt several times, remains a landmark of the town. Nearby, the Honglongjing area features clear streams flowing along the streets, making it a pleasant spot to rest when tired. The Renmin Road area is packed with snack stalls, fruit vendors, and handicraft shops, where you can sample local flavors like grilled rushan cheese, cold chicken rice noodles, and Xizhou baba. As night falls, another scene unfolds. Bars and cafés along Foreigner Street (originally Huguo Road) and Renmin Road light up one after another, with live music drifting from the shops to the streets. The town seamlessly transitions from daytime leisure to nighttime vibrancy within the same ancient city.China · Dali City

There are also many viewing points and rest stops along the way where you can stop to take pictures, rest, and taste local food. Cycling in Dali not only exercises your body, but also allows you to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery and rich cultural landscapes. Whether it is cycling around Erhai Lake, cycling in the countryside, or cycling in the streets of the ancient city, it can bring unforgettable experiences and good memories.China · Dali City

Tengchong Volcanic and Geothermal National Geopark is the region with the largest scale, most complete preservation, concentrated distribution, and comprehensive types of volcanic landforms in Tengchong. It showcases diverse volcanic activities and records a complete volcanic history spanning millions of years. The attraction features complete volcanic types, recent eruption periods, abundant species, and unique views. It serves as a comprehensive national geopark integrating volcanic sightseeing, outdoor leisure, environmental wellness, geological research, and science education. In 2016, as a key component of the Volcanic Hot Spring Tourism Area, it was rated as a national 5A-level attraction. Within the attraction, Dakongshan, Xiaokongshan of Tengchong Volcanic and Geothermal National Geopark, and Heikongshan are aligned in a row. Except for the volcanic cones, all are covered by overflow lava from volcanic eruptions, surrounded by typical volcanic geological landscapes. Visitors can hike to the crater and enjoy panoramic views of vast lava flows and platforms from the summit of Dakongshan. Alternatively, they can take a hot air balloon ride or a powered delta wing for an aerial view of the volcanoes. Nearby, Xiaokongshan of Tengchong Volcanic and Geothermal National Geopark is equally spectacular with its perfectly round crater. Walking around the crater symbolizes "a turn of good fortune." Upon entering the attraction's main gate, you'll find the Tengchong Volcanic Geology Museum on your right. This museum focuses on volcanic geology education, showcasing the distribution of interstellar, global, and Tengchong volcanoes through interactive exhibits, specimen displays, and multimedia presentations. At the foot of Xiaokong Mountain, there's also a Volcanic Science Experience Center – an educational theme park that combines scientific knowledge with entertainment activities. The hot air balloon ride club may close early or suspend operations due to weather or air currents. Those with a fear of heights or special conditions are not recommended to participate. Separate bookings are required for hot air balloon rides, powered trikes, and horseback riding.China · Tengchong

I highly recommend Ms. Zhang Jinxiu from the Yunnan Provincial Museum! I was fortunate to have Ms. Zhang give a guided tour today, and the experience exceeded my expectations. She has a solid foundation in Yunnan's history and is very familiar with its historical context. She explained the stories behind the museum's prized artifacts, such as the Bronze Ox and Tiger Case, in a vivid and easy-to-understand way, with clear logic and a captivating delivery. Her explanations were patient and composed, answering every question. She was never dry or simply reading from a textbook, bringing the dormant artifacts to life. My trip to the Yunnan Provincial Museum was incredibly rewarding, and I sincerely thank Ms. Zhang Jinxiu!

- Tranquil and Relaxed Atmosphere: Compared to Lijiang Ancient Town, Shuhe Ancient Town is quieter and more peaceful, without excessive noise and commercial hawking. It feels more like a place to live, where visitors can slow down and enjoy leisurely moments. - Beautiful Natural Scenery: Shuhe Ancient Town is nourished by water, which comes from melting snow from the mountains. The water is crystal clear, flowing through the fields and into the town, forming small canals that surround every row of houses. The emerald green waters of Jiuding Longtan (Nine Dragon Pool) are like an emerald embedded in the town, adding to its ethereal beauty. - Rich Cultural Heritage: Shuhe Ancient Town has a long history. Formerly known as "Suhe," it is related to the ancient Naxi tribe. During the Yuan and Ming dynasties, it was an important post on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Many relics from that time are still preserved, such as the stone slabs worn smooth by horses' hooves. Historical buildings like Jiefang Bridge and Yujin Bridge also bear the marks of time. - Rich in folk customs: The ancient town preserves the traditional architectural style and lifestyle of the Naxi people. Visitors can see Naxi elders sunbathing in their courtyards, admire exquisite Naxi wood carvings, embroidery and other handicrafts, hear melodious Naxi ancient music, and experience the rich ethnic customs.

Animal interactions within the park are charged separately, and it depends on the individual… some are a bit pricey, others are okay. But it's still fun, kids have a great time, and you'd need at least 4 hours to experience everything at a leisurely pace. The sightseeing bus system is well-designed.

The wetland is China's only volcanic barrier lake floating carpet type wetland, surrounded by mountains, with beautiful scenery and large meadows floating on the water. Walking along the wooden boardwalk is very comfortable due to its high altitude (1750m) and high negative oxygen ion content, but migratory birds were not observed much.

Sifang Street is located in the center of Lijiang Old Town. It is well connected with traffic and surrounded by quiet alleys. It is said that it was built by Mu Tusi in the Ming Dynasty according to the shape of his seal. It is the most important hub on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, merchants from all over the world have gathered here, and the cultures of various ethnic groups have intersected and thrived here. It is the center of economic and cultural exchanges in Lijiang. Sifang Street is famous for its unique street scene of colorful stone paving, clear water washing the street, market in the middle of the day and washing the market at dusk.

I was searching for "Best Spot for Sunset" in Lijiang Ancient Town. Recommendation which pops up was Wangu Tower. Whilst it took me a while to find the entrance through the maze within the old town, but it was worth every second and effort. Started with a refreshing calming stroll within the park (right side about 100 meters walk from entrance, check out for signage). The trail leads me to foot of Wangu Tower. The pond, big ancient drum and bell greets me upon entrance, leading to the majestic view of Wangu Tower. Climbing up to flight of wooden stairs, the top is about 5/6th floor up. It overlooks 360 view of Lijiang surrounding mountains which includes a direct view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain peak. There are high benches available at the top two floors. Visitors can find a spot and enjoy the serene moment within the park, fresh air whilst enjoying the sunset view. A hidden gem within the town , indeed!

Dali Ancient City is definitely worth a visit. Entering from the South Gate, the ancient cobblestone streets exude a charming, old-world atmosphere. Backed by Cangshan Mountain, with distant views of rolling hills, it evokes the feeling of the ancient Nanzhao Kingdom. The ancient city's streets and alleys are crisscrossed, with Renmin Road and Yangren Street being particularly lively. You can find Bai ethnic snacks like roasted milk fan and crispy rice cakes on the street. Climbing Wuhua Tower offers a panoramic view of the entire ancient city's rooftops. The main street is lined with shops, making it quite commercialized. Souvenir shops abound, so be sure to compare prices before buying. It's recommended to avoid the crowds and explore the side alleys to experience the local atmosphere. Stroll around during the day, watch the sunset over the ancient city, and enjoy the enchanting ambiance when the city lights up at night. Overall, it's a great experience. I recommend allowing 2-3 hours to explore at a leisurely pace. A must-visit in Dali, perfect for a relaxing stroll and soaking in the city's laid-back lifestyle.

The scenic area is nice, but personally, I feel the shuttle bus is pointless. It replaces a section of scenic flat road, making the package ticket a waste. The real challenge is the mountain trails; the high altitude makes climbing them especially strenuous.
